The original R7 superquad has always been one of my favorite drivers. This spring when I was going throught my golf stuff, I found my old head that a shaft was pulled from many years ago. I had the same thoughts as you, it was such a good driver for me back then and always liked the shape. Why not put a shaft in it and bring it back. Not wanting to spend too much on a shaft, I got a new Prolaunch Blue 65s. With the mini driver craze and wanting to try a shorter shaft, I cut it down to 43.5", plays 43.75" with grip. I added some lead tape to the heal side to make the head feel right with the shorter shaft.
I have to say this experiment has been great, that head just gives me so much confidence. I would say it was/is a forgiving enough head and the shorter Prolaunch Shaft works well in it. I have no launch monitor numbers but carry distance is very good and I would say it keeps up with the newer drivers. My G440 is defiantly more consistent across the board, but when I catch the R7 on the screws its as good as any other driver.
I say do it! I now carry both drivers in the bag for most rounds, as I just like hitting the R7 superquad. With its current set up, nice baby draws are on autopilot, when I'm swinging well.
