Use the sandpaper Dry, 200, 300. If you wet it, it will slide and not get any friction. You may need to replace those old grips. Leather can last decades, but old rubber grips get hardened and dessicated.

Sand to remove layer of hardened dirty rubber

Given they are 55 years old, grips may be toast.

Those are original rubber MacGregor grips, sand and clean. Not leather, no oil.
