Yes they definitely changed the shape of the dot and increased the space at the sides. Principal is still the same but I can see the leeway you’re on about although I never experienced a problem myself.

Fitting seems like the most logical step, just remember, all fitters are not created equal. Self educate as best you can and always ask questions if you feel like they’re not being asked of you. If it sounds like BS it probably is.

Best chance of holing a putt means that your ball needs enough speed to get past the hole, however, from a visual, I love to see a ball just have enough energy to fall in.
