Last year I went through a full club fitting, hit a bunch of different setups, and surprisingly ended up swinging the Callaway Paradym Smoke AI irons and Smoke AI driver better than anything else — even though I originally thought I’d prefer the Ping G430s. The fitter had me in TT S300 shafts for the irons and a Denali Black shaft in the driver. I was hitting them consistently and felt confident during the session.
At the time, I didn’t purchase because of the cost. Now, prices are dropping with the new releases, and I’m finally in a position to buy — but I’m second-guessing things.
I went into that fitting thinking the Ping lineup (especially the G430 irons and driver) would be my top choice. But after over an hour of hitting, I couldn’t find a groove with them. I even went back to the G430 7-iron toward the end, hit it five times, and still wasn’t getting solid contact. Switched back to the Smoke AI and hit 4 out of 5 crisp.
Here’s the dilemma: I went to the store today to check them out again, and I can’t get over how small and thin the Smoke AIs look at address. They’re really intimidating to me visually, even though I hit them well. On the other hand, the G430s just look so much more forgiving and confidence-inspiring. The larger club face makes me feel like they’d be easier to hit — even though they didn’t actually perform better for me during the fitting.
The driver is a no-brainer. The Smoke AI driver gives me a ton of confidence at address, and I love the way it performs — it’s the best driver I’ve ever hit. No doubts there. My only hesitation is with the irons.
So now I’m wondering:
Should I get fitted again, especially with new models and price drops?
Or should I trust the results from last year’s fitting and go with the Smoke AI setup I was originally dialed into?
Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated. Has anyone else had success with a club that didn’t look right to them at address but just performed?
