Got to play Legends South the other day. Very good golf course. The greens were still recovering from their punching, so a little slow, and a bit more sandy than I might have expected, but they rolled true, and like most bermuda greens, killed my putting. Staff were what you expect at a private club and then some. Plus, being a railfan, you gotta love a course that has an operational railroad running through it. The rest of the course was in very good condition with the exception of a couple of tee boxes, but given the heat, I'm not sure what could be done. There was nothing tricky about the course, but it did require you to hit good shots. I would type a bit more, but I was really dragging towards the end, even with the cart, because 98* is 98*. But a great place to play golf. Hopefully I get a chance at the North course in the future if I am back through.

You want to talk bait and switch, there is a course near me where people paid their annual pass money in January, buying "memberships" that allowed 7 day advance booking, and 6 weeks later the course changed policies so that "public" players could book 6 months out. So Joe who paid up in January has to wait till June 23rd to book July 1, whereas I could book it on Feb. 25th. There was some serious backlash on that one.

I would actually suspect that it's a "Tuesday night nine hole league" where there is some loose association between the participants. i.e, Electricians, or Lions Club. Highly doubt this is about what you are talking about.

How long ago was that written? Lots of things change. One of the people may have found out his wife has a year to live, and wanted to put all his time into her. Maybe they are 70 years old now. At some point, if nothing else, they were going to die, and new ownership would have to take over. I'm not going to rake them over the coals because a 15 year old post was not lived up to.

That would be a huge mistake, imo. While there is value in the name, this community could easily and quickly migrate somewhere else. Those who are paying for ClubWrx may stay, but even that is dicey. Those of us who don't, aren't about to start now. The contacts I have made through this site are great, but I also have their contact info so I wouldn't need the site to get in touch. Sure there would be some loss of "this place is in crap condition right now", but ultimately, if this place becomes too cumbersome to remain a part of, someone will start a new one. Although I would be curious if there is monetization opportunities with the instructors who seem to have gained a ton of clients on here. No idea how you would do it, but.... From the ownership perspective, I hope they didn't overvalue the "PGA Tour access", because, and this may just be me, I don't see a ton of value in it. So you can do a what's in the bag. That info can be gathered fairly easily. The value to me comes from people giving their feedback on different things, be it courses, equipment, or strategies to play or deal with heat. As you say time till tell.

Personally I agree with what you are saying. I dislike the way there seems to be a greater "appreciation," shall we say, of these rankings, than before. Changes were made to "ensure the best players are there." Well, assuming the US Amateur or Jr Amateur is hurt by the absence of the "best" players, that suggests something other than the competition is the prime focus. 3 gue$$e$ as to what that might be. Secondly, if they are the best players, they will get through qualifying, no? But if I put the USGA's hat on for a moment to try to see the other side, one big thing I would think is that it may be difficult to find courses willing to host. I know here in Ontario, nearly all qualifiers now are at public courses, because private clubs don't want to give up their course. They will host the championship proper, but qualifiers, not so much. I know in FLorida it is near impossible to find a one-day event run by the FSGA in the area and time we visit, when in the past, there were several options. So I can see that. Don't like it, but you can't hold a qualifier that no one is willing to host.

Was going to add that. One girl from my club was at a D3 school. PLayed well, but turned her ankle. Coach did everything but kick her off the team. She went to a D1 school and showed very solidly. She never had any illusions about a professional golfer career, but she did not deserve the treatment she got. Even some D3 coaches are more interested in their resumes than their athletes.

Thought they changed that a few years ago? Up to something like $750 or something. Something about Rule 3 in amateur status rules. I can see why courses wouldn't want that known because shop credit is a nice little bump to their revenue, and if the winner is from a decent distance away they may never return, thus wanting to spend it while they are there. I hope you didn't cost yourself some cash. 😀

That is certainly a crappy experience. Anyone else feel sorry for the baby? Poor kid doesn't have a chance in life.

You really shouldn't give us popcorn and then say no butter! 😀 This reminds of a thread in a tennis forum. Apparently the cheating is just as bad in junior tennis, with the added angle of, especially on the girls' side, a bigger player intimidating a smaller player into going along. The point was made, no one in their right mind would ever scheduled a basketball game, football, whatever without officials, yet in tennis we expect these kids to make their own calls and be honest about it. Especially if they have played other sports where there is an attitude "if you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'" , or "well if the ref didn't call it it wasn't a penalty." When you think about it, it makes no sense. I know that it is even tougher in golf to get some eyes on people, and once again, with kids, can we really expect them to be willing to call someone out? They are taught to focus on their own game, and then add to that the social factors: intimidation, could be a friend of theirs, not to mention the fact that society today seems to think that standing up for the rules in a competition makes you the bad guy rather than the guy who cheated. I don't know the answer, but it's sad it has come to this, although cheating has been around forever. When the Patrick Reed stuff in San Diego blew up, I think Chamblee was saying how an old pro told him of a guy who would always put his hands on the ball as soon as he could, because it then gives him the opportunity to somewhat dictates what happens next. So it's nothing new. But it's sad that "what can you do about it" is the common refrain. Not an illogical one, given how there seems to be next to no backup for the person who brings it up, but it's still sad.

Yeah, what part of Toronto will you be in? I can't think of any public courses you *absolutely* have to play that would justify driving across the city(and note that when discussing "city", I can't speak for other but I'm referring to GTA in general, which is a huge area. ) If we were talking about St George's or Lambton or something like that, sure, but being private clubs, good luck getting on. Specify what area you'll be staying in, and you can get a better bit of info.

So looks like I have Legends South lined up for when I am down. Google maps is saying the driving is "temporarily closed"? Any word on that? Given I want to play well I may need to go warm up somewhere nearby if its closed.

Exactly. You're not out there hustling for business, or looking to get favors banked, but once you know someone after a few rounds of golf, you know whether or not you would do business with them, and if you do, you will be looked after. No one ever mentions either the fact that other private clubs can somewhat "open" up to you if things work out a certain way.
