Switching from 710 AP1s to Miura PP-9003

Curious if anybody on here has made this switch and what your general impressions were of going from the cast AP1s to the forged Miuras? I'm thinking about making the switch as a 30th birthday gift to myself and am trying to get all the feedback I can since its not a small amount to spend on golf clubs.

Hit them before purchasing. What someone else feels may not be the same as what you feel. I have Miuras, and I love them, but I would always recommend trying them first. If they are a big Miura dealer, they may have an extra club you can borrow for a couple of days and see how it performs on the course. Turf interaction is very important with a lot of Miura designs, as they can dig alittle easier than other irons. I am a picker, so they are perfect for my swing.

I tried them, and quickly went back to AP1's. Part of it might have been the Steelfiber shafts that did not work out. But, the heads just didn't work for me.

Get a 5 or 6-iron first and give it a good workout.

You may be putting too much emphasis on cast v. forged. The AP1s have a unique feel - one of the best feeling sets around, and that's probably due to the construction with tungsten weights and damping. There's nothing wrong with the feel of the AP1s, and if you have the 105T shaft that's also hard to match, in fact even the original DG High Launch shaft was excellent.

What you'll probably get is less forgiveness, and you should certainly demo a Miura set to find that out.

+1 for demo'ing

Feel is just so subjective. Contrary to whatever you hear around here, there are single-handicappers out there that enjoy "clicky shovel" irons both in feel and performance.

Might as well make sure before taking the plunge since I hardly know of a high end club dealer that wouldn't let you try out something so expensive.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll go ahead and get a 6 iron demo club as suggested so I can compare it to my current set over the next couple weeks. If it doesn't work out it looks like I'll be able to sell the club for not much less than I paid for it.

I have the Reg PP9003 (not straight neck) and am fine with turf interaction; not low handicapper. Maybe try demoing the strightneck and regular if you can.

One thing I'd want to consider before dropping that much coin on forged - Are you going to play from waste areas or on very sandy courses or practice ranges?

Thanks, that brings up another question I have. Is there a real playability difference in offset vs. less offset or is it more of what suits your eye the best?

I think that was posed to me. So I'll answer f[b]irst[/b], but I'm no expert. In theory the offset is supposed to be more forgiving the PP9003 is the more forgiving model I think. I don't consider the offset big compared to some big-headed, big-soled GI irons I had that were wrong for me and I kept hitting thin.

Why not phone Miura at their Head Office in Burnaby, BC. The guys there are very helpful from all accounts, and were to me the one time I phoned.
