Moving to NC (Wake Forest Area) need course suggestions and people to play with

So i graduated from nursing school in december, and i just took a position north east of Raleigh. i am really excited for this move, and the weather here in indiana is just making it that much sweeter. I have a couple buddies that live in the area, but none of them are big golfers. I am wondering if anyone had suggestions for a good club to join as well? I was also wondering if anyone would be up for some rounds. I will be working nights, so i'd be down to play in the mornings or afternoons depending on the day. Just reply or PM me. I would love to meet some new Golfwrx members.

About me i am 25 and an 8 handicap. I like to play any different course from the cheap munis to the nice higher end courses. I am really down for anything, and i couldn't care less what your handicap is. I just have fun playing. In fact most of my friends play once or twice a year, so slow play isn't an issue. i really look forward to this new adventure in my life, and i am hoping to play close to year around. this should help my game out a bunch.

Welcome to the area! There are several good courses to choose from in the Raleigh area. The best deal and value for the money that I know of is joining the the Fred Smith Courses. There is a big time builder in the area that owns 4 courses. For $211 a month I get access to 4 courses Hedingham, Riverwood, Eagle Ridge, and Olde Liberty unlimited range balls (except on Wed. they close the ranges for maintenance) and no cart fees. These are not the upper tier of courses around but they are solid and usually in pretty good shape. I joined during a membership drive so I'm not sure if this exact same deal is available but I think that they'll have something that's somewhere in line with this. Other courses that we play a lot are River Ridge, The Neuse, Pine Hollow and Heritage. There are also some really nice private clubs in the area and Pinehurst is about a hour away. Lots of choices here. Enjoy!!

The Fred smith deal is a pretty solid deal. Olde Liberty has a great layout just the conditions are not the greatest. Heritage is a nice course a touch on the pricey side. You cant go wrong with any of the university courses I prefer Lonnie Poole which is the NC State course. It is about 25 minutes from Wake Forest. I also live in the area. I am right near TPC Wakefield which is a nice private club. I am not a member anywhere due to the overwhelming amount of courses to choose from within an hour or so. You can get some great deals this time of the year as well for some pretty nice courses.

Shoot me a pm sometime and we can get together for a round or if you have any questions on the area itself.

All of the above are great suggestions. The Heritage is right there in Wake Forest. If you head down Hwy 98 towards Durham you'll find Falls Village and The Crossings. Both pretty good courses. Falls is heavily wooded with no houses. The Crossings is shorter and more targety. Wild Wood Green is in Raleigh on Strickland Rd. Good course but kind of short and pricey. Welcome to the area!

Welcome to Wake Forest. I too play mostly weekday mornings(usually walking 9) and would welcome another player. I play Heritage mostly due to it being in good shape and its close to the house. You can walk 9 for $20 M-Th. Falls Village is another good option for the $$ during the week. Day trips to the sandhills area are not uncommon with the plethora of courses there and its only and hour or so away. Let me know if you want to meet up for a round. 10hcp'er here.

Like has been said before, welcome to the area. I too am a member with the Fred Smith thing and my only complaint is the lack of funding for the grounds crew to actually do their job to the best of their ability. For the money, it is the best deal in the area. I have played every course in the area with the exceptions of Brier Creek and TPC Wakefield. As much as I play, the membership at Fred Smith's courses makes the most sense financially to me. I will caution, stay away from Pascals! It is nothing more than a goat track and not enjoyable (downtown Wake Forest). When you get down to the area, let us know and I am sure we can get an outing together with all the locals that are here. If you don't mind dropping a little coin, I can probably get us out on Raleigh Country Club (just be prepared for greens running about 13 and a few 4 putts).

I played out there a few weeks ago with a friend that is a member there. I'll talk to him and see what his limitations are on guest privileges. The practice facility is worth the cost of admission honestly with immaculate range, 3 short game greens with bunkers, and a huge putting green.

If you can get someone to take you to Old Chatham it is awesome. Very private, but great experience course has new Bermuda greens and are so true. . I would second some of the other conversations as well about the university courses. Finley is great layout minus one hole and Lonnie Poole has the potential to be great.

I live near Wakefield, too, but I play almost 100% at Lonnie Poole since it's so close to my office downtown (and I'm a State grad).

Looks like we've got enough warm bodies in the area that we should try to put together some kind of an outing this spring, maybe.

I second that idea. Not at Lonnie Poole though. ;) That is a course I have to have a bunch of rounds under my belt before I attempt a round there. Made the mistake of playing there in the spring last year and shot an abysmal round.

Loonie Poole is the same as anywhere else.... hit it, find it, hit it again... rinse and repeat.... :)

We could break Hoosier in right and go to Tobacco Road for his initiation to the area. He might decide he wants to go back west after that though...

Yes #10 might be the worst hole ever. 400 yard hole with a 90 degree dogleg and u can only hit 200 to the leg
[/quote]

Yeah, figured that was the one. Not a fan of it either. Not the worst hole in town though. My vote goes to #10 at Eagle Ridge. Horrible hole.

I agree!! I just feel like a par 5 should be a risk reward type hole not 5 iron 5 iron wedge. I'm not a big fan of #10 at Finley either but overall I really enjoy the UNC course.

#10 is a huge risk reward hole... Driver over the creek, 3w over the next creek, depending on how wet it is, it rolls up onto the front or you have a soggy baby diaper chip... Helps to have the wind at your back though... Originally, when they built the course, the first creek was not there but the Army Corps of Engineers made them put the creek back in due to wildlife sanctions or something... Same with the creek on 3

Its a "heavy on the Risk"- reward hole. I am just not a fan of target golf from the tee on a par 5.

But you like Tobacco Road????? Tobacco Road = target golf off all tees and blind approach shots to 50% of the greens... :)

Edit: I don't know what is wrong with the golf courses around the area.... What do you mean "we are closed due to weather today" Hell I have a push cart and some orange balls.... Let me play... LOL

I would second (third?) the previous suggestions for Finley. Such a nice course, always well maintained and really fun to play. Probably one of my favorites I've played to date.

I know, I know. However, TR has generous landing areas for those tee shots.

Its just one of those courses I dont have good thoughts about when deciding where to play. And its not close so its easy to forget.

Dude...you're making me homesick!!! :)

You'd be hard pressed to find more really good and affordable coures anywhere in the country than the Triad and Triangle areas. I'm from Winston Salem, but lived in Greensboro for 35 years and there are so many quality choices.

Then to top it off you're only 90 minutes from Pinehurst.
