Should you lengthen wedges if you lengthen irons?

Hi guys,

 

Just got my brand new 714 ap2's today. They are the first iron I have been properly fit for and I am excited to play them on my golf trip in the last week of March! However they left me with a few questions at the bottom of the bag.

 

My irons are 1.5 inches over standard of which me and my fitter determined would be a good fit. ( mainly because I got fitted for length on xhot2's since they didn't have a titliest iron shaft longer than .5+ and I was told that since we were a little in between, it's easier to order a little longer and cut down an iron shaft later if I need to rather than add an extension. I also prefer to play an iron that's a little flatter rather than upright). I know I will probably hit the ball a bit farther but I am a little worried about my wedges. I am using standard length ones now, but I will be getting the new sm5's soon.

 

I know this is maybe a silly question but with my irons being a bit longer should I make sure I get fit for wedges that are that much longer as well? I am a little worried about distance gapping issues.

 

Would love to hear other peoples experiences with this.

I was in a similar situation that you are in a couple of months ago. I was fitted for an extra inch on my irons. the fitter told me that it was necessary to lengthen the wedges for 2 reasons, it helps you with having better yardages, and you'll make more consistent contact. Now he told me that something that some players do is they all have the same length with their wedges, now he told me that he only recommends that if you are more comfortable with that setup. To answer your question i would recommend you to lengthen your wedges. If you don't mind me asking how tall are you?

I'm 6'2". Not super tall, but my 9 iron is my shortest club. In other words, my 9, W, 52/56/60 are all equal length. It helps me.

I'm 6'3" and I got all my irons +1/2". This includes 4-GW. My 54* and 60* are both standard length but I like it better like that. I don't usually use my wedges for full shots (other than my PW and GW). My SW I use for pitches and my LW I use mainly around the green. Having a shorter club gives me better feel and touch with my wedges.

Yeah that's what I was kinda thinking. I love to hit controlled full shots just because they make me feel more comfortable and consistent. So for me hitting my gaps are important.

I mean part of the reason we went with such a long length was because I struggled with feeling comfortable with my short irons because I have to get so steep with them since they are so short causing me to hit the ball fat or high on the face ( old irons) .

The fitter is also the guy I take lessons with so he said the longer short irons will help me a little with standing up more since I crouch a little to much to reach my short irons and wedges.

What degrees were your wedges, and what were the gaps?

I'm 6'4" and play irons 1" over standard. My gap, sand and lob wedge are all the same length as my pitching wedge. I've been doing this for years and it makes my wedge game more consistent.

I'm 6'3' My irons are +1. My old fitter fitted me at +1 and recommended going with the gap, sand and lob wedge the same length as my pitching wedge.I never really cared for them like that. I now play all my irons and wedges +1 added on from their standard length so they tamper down a little bit. There would be no way I would want to play my irons +1 and have my wedges standard. That wouldn't feel right to me.

My PW-60* are the same length - mark performance improvements, esp in the chipping department, I do not feel like i am on my knees hitting, Im 6'2" and irons are +.5"
