Are you saying the only thing holding every back from being scratch is just the equipment choices? Nothing to do with amount of practice or god given skill etc..?

Don't forget, your gonna want to have those Sr. Flex's soft stepped before you run them. Don't want them playing to stiff ;)

Not sure the OP would go that far, but it sure sounds like he is saying his advice supersedes everyone that isn't scratch and playing blades, regardless.

There have been a few great players who go at the ball hard, such as Arnold Palmer and Nick Price. But the overwhelming majority of consistently good ball strikers swing with a smooth tempo (pace), which helps them maintain a consistent rhythm (sequence).
Going at the ball hard is very challenging to repeat on a day to day , week to week, month to month basis. This is why so few players have any consistent success using that type of swing tempo.

[quote name='Krt22' timestamp='1394484326' post='8841949']

Having a repeatable swing is the bottom line, it's irrelevant how fast or slow it is.

This thread is about how equipment relates to scoring. Obviously, equipment is only a relatively minor factor of low scoring.
For a player averaging scores of about 74-75-76, some club or shaft changes might make a difference of a an extra fairway or greens hit, and help lower the average score a stroke or two.
For a player averaging scores north of 85, it's likely either his full swing technique, short game technique, or both, could stand some significant improvement. In that high scoring average player's case, technique improvement will likely help him shoot lower scores more so than would an equipment change.

For the 165-195 yard carry range I do keep my mind open to trying any club that may help me strike higher trajectory , soft landing shots. That's any area where many par 3 tee shots fall, as well as an approach distance for some long yardage par 4's.
Over the years I have tried high lofted fairway woods, progressive set large headed irons, and hybrids. I learned the long shafted fairway woods produce too much distance, and the large headed irons bulky size makes them challenging to play off less than ideal lies, so I've had the most consistently good results from hybrids. Right now my highest lofted hybrid is a 23*, but I would like to try one in the 26* loft and also 29* or 30* loft. I've never swung one of the super high lofted hybrids, and it may be that the "hybrid concept" doesn't lend itself to such high lofts. Mizuno makes a club called the JPX-Fli-Hi, I think, and advertises it as an "iron-hybrid". True iron length shafts with a head-sole design that makes it more sensible to play off of less than ideal lies than the typical large headed iron would play. I've never held or swung one of those Mizuno's, but for that 165-195 yardage range, one or two of those clubs might be a good choice.

The 6 , 5, and 4 iron range is where I notice some disparity.

Should I assume that you shoot under 72 on average or that you be retiring some of your S56's?

If you're shooting 72 or better every round, clearly you're a + handicap, and clearly you could play anything you want. If you're that good, you probably also realize that you should play equipment that makes you confident and fits your game.

I have tried some JPX Fli-Hi hybrids, and they are extremely similar to Pings G15/K15/G20 hybrids. I use a G20 hybrid and the thing I like about it is that it doesn´t look like a fairway wood at all, that makes it a lot easier to hit like an iron compared to other hybrids. I play my 23* hybrid a bit shorter too, more like a regular 4 iron in length.

I surmise that most people who are poor golfers and have played for many years do not practice enough or seek instruction. With that in mind, maybe that group should look to maximize their fun on the course with a forgiving set of clubs.

I know 15 handicappers who switched to blades and are now single digit. I also know 15 handicappers who switched to blades, got worse, switched to other clubs with no success and eventually stopped playing. What am I saying here? Nothing. There is no correlation.

Have you tried any hybrids in the super high loft 26* or 29* model versions ?
My 23* Cleveland Mashie carries for me, depending on conditions, in the 195-210 yardage range. I am looking for something similar to go shorter carry distances, such as 175 to 190 carry.
I expect a traditional 26* 5 hybrid, or maybe one of the shorter shaft length Mizuno JPX Fly-Hi 4's, would be good for that yardage.

I say we all just buy 16* 550cc drivers with 40", senior flex shafts

Hybrids down to the 8i, and then go full blade from there.

Except putter. Get the biggest, most balancedest putter ever.

Great idea... except its not going to make a hill of beans difference regarding average Joe's index going down. It has nothing to do with blades either. Indexes have not fluctuated much for a number of years, even with the most forgiving golf technology in history. :) Reason, NO PRACTICE to speak of.

If your scoring average is above 72, then it might be a good idea to keep an open mind about your equipment choices. For example, concepts such as higher lofted drivers, shorter shafted drivers, hybrids or high lofted fairway woods instead of long irons, softer shaft flex irons, wide sole wedges etc... are all long time offerings designed to produce higher trajectory and, or more accurate shots, especially off less than ideal lies.
Ideally, the clubs in your bag are not the ones with which , on occasion, you may strike the desired shot.
For your scoring average, the best clubs for your bag may be the ones which consistently, through adverse weather conditions and less than ideal lies, give you the highest percentage chance of producing the desired shot.
If your scoring average is above 72, then you may want to think twice about quickly dismissing the idea of a different style club head design or shaft flex.

Yes, some PGA Tour players, as well as lots of web.com players, just about every club pro, most collegiate players, and I would guess every regular participant at this forum has a scoring average higher than 72.

Not trying to be funny, just want to help other people who are passionate about golf and want to lower their scoring average.
Here at this forum I have received and given some helpful information. That is how a discussion forum is supposed to work.
And, it's always been part of the game of golf to learn from other players.

Yes

You should be open minded about shutting her down.

Although I appreciate that you are trying to help, you're going to continue defending your comments to this crew.

I can relate somewhat to this post. I am a 1 handicap and over the last twenty rounds my average score is 76.5. I play course that is 7200 yards and has a slope of 139. With that background I was struggling this winter to hit greens thus putting pressure on my short game. This has always been my weakest part of my game. I began costing myself shots and decided I need a change. When I dug deep I have typically played blades in my pw,9,8, & 7 iron and more forgiving clubs/hybrids in the lower irons. This was based on my need to have something that looked good.

Fast forward to 2 months a ago, I realized I never hit my "forgiving"clubs because I am usually a 7 iron or better in. Thus the idea of having a split set with forgiving clubs was lost. I decided to suck up my pride and get a set of Apex pros and couldn't be happier. Compared to my Mizuno mp-4 or my custom scratch don white Sb-1 I have never hit more greens.

Results: last 5 rounds scoring average is 73 with my highest score being a 77. Sometimes it's good to try something different.
