How do you start your range session? Short irons vs long irons.

Was curious as to how you all start your range practice.

 

I always start with short clubs SW, half shots until I got my rhythm then make my way to to longer irons and then woods. I read an interview with Tom Watson and he suggests the opposite, stating that once you can hit a 3 or 4 iron the rest will be no problem. Might be easy for him, but it has me thinking as long irons would be a weak point in my game. Your thoughts?

I also start with short irons as follows: 58, 48, 9i, 7i, 5i, hybrid, 3W and driver. Sometimes I go 52, PW, 8i, 6i, 4i, hybrid, 3W and driver. I prefer to alternate which clubs I begin with, more even wear throughout the set.

I start a bucket of balls with my 9 iron everytime now. I hit a few balls with the 9 until I feel good about my swing and contact and then move straight up to the driver for a few balls. After I feel good with the driver I hit some wedge shots and then will finish the bag my mixing up shots with all different clubs. Not really sure when I started doing it, I used to start by just grabbing the driver but changed it up a few months ago. This new routine works well for me.

if you can hit the long irons, you can probably hit the rest of the clubs in your bag. psychologically, after hitting a handful of 3 irons, the 6 iron is going to look lot more lofted.

personally, I start off hitting a handful 3/4 swing 56* wedges, and I'm good to go. I tend to work on long irons the most since you can do a decent job masking swing flaws using short irons.

These days I like to start by protracting the wide-to-wide drill with the sand wedge, and then go up through the iron set by odd numbers one day, even the next. I try to keep from hitting the same club too much unless there is something specific that I'm working on. After warming up through the set, I try to hit shots with individual clubs like I'm playing an actual golf course. I've learned that mindlessly beating balls is self-defeating, and will actually make you worse instead of better.

One of my golf coaches suggested years ago to get the medium size bucket and spend twice as much time preparing for each shot.

Used to start them with short irons. Once I got into a groove, I would try to transfer the same tempo over to the longer irons. Usually it worked well.

However I don't go to the range anymore. My practice is now on a nearby 9-hole golf course with grass tee boxes. It has 6 holes where I can hit driver. Awesome! And when nobody is behind me, I hit multiple balls on many shots. IMO, it's the best way to practice. I only count the first tee shots of course!

60, 7i, 4i, 18*H, 3W, Driver, go putt. That's when I'm getting ready to go play.

Full range session I'll hit all the wedges lots of ways, work my way through the odd or even irons, hit a few with the long clubs, then more wedges to finish up. Then go putt.
