Wedge Shaft Trimming

Hey guys,

 

I may simply be over thinking this as I usually do however I figured I would turn to the experts for there thoughts. I am starting a new build and hoping to finally end my ho'ing (yeah right). MY question is I have settled on Project X 7.0 for my irons and S400 Tour Issue in my wedges. My concern is having such a big difference in frequency between the shafts, would it be advisable to tip trim the S400 Tour Issues to stiffen them up a bit? I know I want something a little softer in my wedges that my irons, the question is how much softer?

 

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Part of the problem with offering a suggestion, is the question that needs to be asked first, is how do you hit your wedges?
Do you hit all of your wedges the same? Do you hit your LW and use it the same way as your GW, just differences in yardage?
Do you play your SW out if the fairway, or only out of the sand and heavy rough?
When I do wedge fittings, the majority of the time, each wedge has a different shaft in it. Usually the same weight, but different trims to effect different playing characteristics.

The DG X100 will be tip softer than the S400. You can take S400 and place the 8 iron shaft into the GW. Try the 7 iron S400 in the LW.
The concern over the frequency differences, should be if no concern, unless you only hit your wedges with full swings only.

I have already purchased the TI S400 Wedge Shafts I play mostly 3/4 shots with wedges but I do have a hard transition and have fought over spinning the ball on occasion.

If your concern is about the different frequencies between your iron/wedge shafts, then tipping s400's may not be the right path. PX 7.0's are pretty stout and I believe you can only get away with tipping DG TI's about a 1/4" or so before you run into the problem of being able to fully insert into the hosel. Fix to this would be to have your wedge hosel's reamed out to accommodate the wider taper.
Might want to consider "tiger stepping" x100's to draw your frequencies closer if that is what you want. However, I play PX 6.5's and DG TI S400's tipped 1/4" and it works for my game.

Any experience playing tipped S400's and not tipped S400's Im not trying to get the S400's to the same frequency just wondering about how much they could be stiffened up

Count 1/8 as 1 CPM and most hosels will take a taper tip shaft tipped 3/8 without insertion problems, so your potential is only 3 CPM or like hard stepping once. (4/8). Compared to PX 7.0, still very soft.

PS! there is no reason to buy Tour issue models for wedges, i would say dont, because TI is only weight matched, and to the lower end of S400 weight, and we go S400 to gain weight in wedges, so go regular and get the most heavy of them, those who where to fat to get the label S400 Ti.

No. I moved to the s400's in my sm4's coming from PX 6.5's in my old u-groove vokey spin mills.
