Pro V1 Player - Looking for a new ball

IdahoHacker

Recommended Posts

Before it gets out of hand - Pro v1's are fine - just curious to see what else is out there that is comparable with all of the technological advances being made.

SS ~ 104 - Like a softer ball when putting but not butter soft.

I am trying the B330s (Hydrocore) now. Was curious what else others have tried.

Thanks in advance!

I've been testing balls for the past few weeks to lock in for the season.

I only played Pro V's or Pro V x's for years. Last year I tested for a few weeks and the Chrome + was the winner. Really great ball. So now I'm looking to see if anything could replace it. I like to stick with one all season and load up.

I played the B330 for the last week and it's a great ball. Awesome in the wind and just wants to go straight. I play in wind a lot and for that reason, it looks like a great fit.

Played the Nike Black today and I was really surprised. Long! Straight. Very similar to the B330, but a little longer. Neither spun back too much on me, which is a plus. The Chrome spins more and can sometimes hurt me, like the Pro V's.

The Wilson FG line is a sleeper. Check them out if you haven't. Very nice ball.

I actually like the Chrome better than the new SR3.

RBZ urethane... Don't knock it until you try it. Don't get me wrong, ProV's are one heck of a ball! But for less than half the cost and with very comparable feel. Try them...

If you are a ProV1 (non x) guy and you want a better ball that offers more distance off the tee, better durability, similar spin and feel... There is only one place to look, TaylorMade TP (non X).

Simply an amazing ball...

The TP line, B330 line, and XV line are all darn impressive and can knock the Pro V out of the bag for many people.

IMO the Srixon ZStar compares very favorably to the ProV1.
+1
I started playing Z-Star XV's this year ($12 for a dozen off lost golf balls) and love them. Lower spin off the driver but still plenty around the green for control. The XV compares to the V1x and the Z-Star compares to the V1.

Bridgestone B330 line. The 2014 line is top notch. Plus they are made in the USA and my home state.
I do like the fact they are USA made. Played the 330s today in a opening day tournament. Seemed longer with irons and woods. About 3-5 with irons and 10 or so with driver - on well struck shots. The greens were firm and fast - these putted well. Spin game was not so great today. Stayed its line in wind really well.

So far so good.

I WANT to play Bridgestone..Someone help me here:

Swingspeed is low to mid 90's. 2 years ago I tried the RX and RXS. RX seemed pretty hard and RXS spun too much for me.
I think I'd have to play the 330 or 330s if I switched.

Last year I bought new Pro V1x logo overruns for $28 shipped (2013 model). This year I did the Carl's GolfLand deal for $31.50 shipped (still most current model). I should mention that I've chosen the V1x for years because I prefer its trajectory and I don't need the additional spin of the V1.

Can you get these prices on NEW Bridgestone 330's?

Sorry to thread jack a little here but I've been searching threads and this is the most recent, plus the comment above is what has me confused.

Is the general consensus that the v1x spins more for some people and less for others, and that you need to try both out for yourself to know for sure? This would go against the long held notion that the X spins less for everyone.

If I remember correctly the Pro V1x spins more on wedge shots than the regular Pro V1

V1x is designed to spin less off woods and long irons, launches slightly higher, yet spins more on short irons and wedges when compared to V1. It has been this way for a long time. So, everyone is correct... V1x spins less and V1x spins more... It just depends on what club you are using.

So like 80% of people would fit better into the V1x then right?
That would be my assumption. Not to mention, that's probably the reason 80%+ of tour players that play Titleist are playing V1x versus V1. The one advantage that V1 has over V1x is the ability to shape the ball easier with long and mid irons... Unless you're Bubba Watson of course!

I haven't played the most recent ProV1 (I am playing the current Pro V1x) but in past models I always seemed to hit the x lower and it performed better in the wind for me.

Maybe the current models are different.

In my experience/preference I've yet to find a ball that trumps the prov. I always return to it for different reasons. I liked the tp3, but those are long gone. Project a is a cheaper solution that performs well for a mid tier ball. Bridgestone design just irks me, and for the same price I'm choosing t**** all day. In short there is no other prov. How many majors has the prov line witnessed? There's a reason beyond endorsement cash and marketing that it's the number one ball in the game around the world. And I don't foresee this changing in the next 10 years.

Recently playe the new B330s in my attempt to find a new ball that was softer than te "x" tour balls but still had low driver spin, did not sacrifice distance off of the driver, kept it's line in the wind and did not suck back 30ft when hitting full wedge shots. The B330s is that ball. The Lethal had all those characteristics for me except it spin too much of full wedges. The Pro V1x seemed to be effected more by the wind and was 5-10 yards shorter off of the driver than say the B330 and Z Star XV. The B330 and XV lacked the green side spin I desired.

I can tell you the B330s gets a check mark in all of my boxes. Long, straight, soft and spins but not too much. Granted I have not tried either of the Tour Prefered offerings yet but unless they reveal the location of the lost city of Atlantis I don't see anyway they could be better.

I have been gaming the 330s as well - as my first attempt at a Prov1 replacement. So far - like you stated - I like it. Good distance, good check, personally like the feel off of the putter, durable and good flight (wind or not). Pleasantly surprised as I was not a fan of the 330s in the past. Must be the new Hydro-core! :D
