Jimenez and the 'interesting man' connection

Jimenez_0.jpg

Miguel Angel Jimenez from the first round of the 2014 Masters, wearing his trademark aviator sunglasses,

is just one more example of why some compare him to "The Most Interesting Man in the World" featured in the Dos Equis commercials.

To fellow pro golfers, Miguel Angel Jimenez is known as "The Mechanic" for his love of high-performance vehicles like his red Ferrari.

To the rest of us who follow the game, he's become known as "The World's Most Interesting Golfer" because of the numerous similarities to "The World's Most Interesting Man" from the Dos Equis commercials.

You can't help but smile when you look at Jimenez. He's a man with his own style -- the red, curly ponytail under the PING hat and the aviator shades and, of course, the fine cigar and glass of Rioja that seem to occupy each hand after he signs his scorecard.

It's hard to say when exactly the comparisons started. The ads made their debut in 2006 in the United States, but it would have certainly taken time to become the well-known part of pop culture it is today. GolfChannel.com's Jason Sobel, made the reference in a blog while at ESPN, covering the 2009 Open Championship. Jimenez held the first-round lead at Turnberry.

That fictional character played by actor Jonathan Goldsmith in the Dos Equis commercials is known for the outlandish things he does. He enjoys fine cigars. His drink of choice -- naturally -- is Dos Equis beer. Overall, he seems to enjoy life more than anyone else.

And, most of all, he looks like he enjoys life more than the rest of us.

He's an enigma.

We dug up an interview from www.cigaraficionado.com from 2011. In the piece, agent Chubby Chandler (who represents Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood among others), had this to say of Jimenez:

"He's a man of his own and everyone appreciates him. He lives his life and plays the game the way he wants to. He never rushes anything, he savors everything. He just inhales life, and he exudes it. I've never known someone more comfortable in his own skin than Miguel."

What's better than that?

There was also this from the www.cigaraficionado.com article:

"It is important, no, to love what you are doing?” asks Jimenez. "It is important to enjoy the things that life brings you. I always know that when I start to play golf, that this is what I would like to do. I become good enough to be successful and have many good things for my life."

Right then, Jimenez picks up the reporter’s tape recorder from the table and holds it close to his mouth, like a microphone: "I just want to say that golf is a beautiful game and it has given me a beautiful life."

During the 2013 Open Championship, Sobel asked Jimenez if he was aware of his comparisons to the World's Most Interesting Man. Jimenez provided this fantastic, insightful response: "I don't compare myself with anyone. I try to live my life and enjoy myself. I think people ought to try to do the same thing." - LEGEND!!

To recap: Jimenez loves fast cars, fine cigars, fine wine, has won 20 events on the European Tour, has played on four European Ryder Cup teams, today joined Fred Couples and Ben Hogan in the Masters record books with his third-round 66 that tied for low score by a player 50 or older in the tournament and, overall, loves life.

It makes you wonder: Maybe those Dos Equis commercials are loosely based on Jimenez.

Ponytail?

Pah.

Who else could wear mirror shades on a golf course and look good doing it?

Who else could wear brown... brown ... and look good doing it?

in these days of hideously over colour co-ordinated 'outfits' put together by queens on acid... Brown polo shirt and brown toe cap shoes... Real leather shoes, not your pathetic athletic, polyurethane, 'street' look, low profile schmofile baloney.

Good lord - it's not just a ponytail, it's ginger ponytail for cripes sake, and he carries it off.

Watching him today and he has the trifecta. The John Daly gut, the Poncharelli shades and the Steven Segal ponytail. How could you be a combination of those 3 and not be the coolest cat out there.

the names that can soon claim spots in champion tour fields are impressive....maj, vijay, davis love, maggert, monty and others i know i'm overlooking. these guys still have tons of game left so things on that side could heat up to be very competitive

Jimenez ready for Champions Tour debut

April 01, 2014

jimenez-847-chriscondon.jpg

Miguel Angel Jimenez isn’t acting his age. Or is he?

It’s not an original thought that 50 is the new 40 in golf. The concept has circulated and gained support for several years on the Champions Tour and Jimenez is determined to prove it in 2014.

Jimenez, the veteran European Tour star with the cigar longer than conceded putts, a wine glass that’s never half-full and the signature ponytail, will make his Champions Tour debut in the second Greater Gwinnett Championship at TPC Sugarloaf, April 18-20.

Next up on his busy international agenda is the Masters Tournament. Last week, Jimenez was player/captain of the European side in Malaysia for the Eurasia Cup, which ended in a draw.

Jimenez is another of the 50-year-olds who doesn’t have time to look back. His standard remains high and his focus is on the future. The popular Spaniard has his sights set on earning a spot on Captain Paul McGinley’s European Ryder Cup squad for the matches in Gleneagles, Scotland.

“I'm going to do the efforts to get there,” Jimenez said in Malaysia. “I'm going to work for that. That is my goal … In the long terms, to the end of August, I will try to play my best and get a spot on the team. That would be a mission for me.”

Jimenez, nicknamed the Mechanic for his preference for driving fast cars, including his gleaming red Ferrari, became the oldest winner in European Tour history when he won the 2012 UBS Hong Kong Open aged 48 and 318 days.

Jimenez has won 30 times worldwide and has finished top 10 eight times in major championships, including at least once in each of the four grand slam events. His best is a T2 at the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach where Tiger Woods dominated. The next year, Jimenez tied for third in The Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St. Annes behind another American standout, David Duval.

Jimenez got his American campaign started this year at the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play (lost in the first round to Bill Haas, 4-and-3) and the WGC-Cadillac Championship. At Doral, he opened with 70, added a third-round 69 and was on the periphery of contending before a T13 finish.

“I love feeling that knot in my stomach, I love it,” he said at Doral.

Jimenez resumes his U.S. schedule next week at Augusta National Golf Club, where he has three top-10 finishes in 2001, 2002 and 2008. Then he will drive a couple of hours north to TPC Sugarloaf.

Jimenez missed nearly five months of the 2013 European Tour season after breaking his right leg in a skiing accident in December, 2012. Once recovered, he continued to do what he has done since turning professional in 1982 - play golf at a high level and enjoy life at every turn. That makes him a candidate to be a perfect fit on the Champions Tour where life and golf are stress-free, if no less competitive – just the way Jimenez likes things.

“I always say the same thing,” Jimenez said. “The main thing is I love the game and I love to compete. Of course, I like to enjoy my life. I like to have the wine, have a glass of wine when I eat, and I like to smoke and enjoy myself, and I also like to work, because I don't mind.

“I love the game and I go to the driving range and I don't mind to spend one, two, three hours at a time I need to fix my swing and I don't mind to go out and play or spend my time on the putting green. And I go to the gym and I work because I need to be fit to compete with the guys -- you have to be happy with what you are doing.”

Jimenez has never been characterized as someone who spends inordinate amounts of time on his golf or fitness. But he knows what must be done.

“The more old you get, the more hard you need to work,” he said. “You need to have some cardio and you need to lose some weight to keep the strength of the muscle and the elasticity, because the older we get, the more stronger we get but not if you are lazy and sitting on the couch, you are getting old quickly. Just pushing things, pushing things, moving, stretch, walking, running, doing things, keep you alive and keep you happy.”

** from this moment forward, i will completely change my fitness routine to match that of señor maj!! ** :)

Nobody has ever accused Jimenez of not being happy.
