4-4:30 for a weekend morning round is more than acceptable. Expecting a 4:30 round teeing off after 10am is not logical. Once there's time lost there's no possible way to get it back. If you're having 5+ hour rounds and you're teeing of before 9am, your course is the problem. Playing with a friend taking a cart we can speed through at 3 hours. Under a 4:30 pace I'm never waiting for a shot, even when taking a cart. Walking at a 4:30 pace I'm never waiting. Having said that, I never want to play a five hour round. That's why I would never tee off on the weekend after 10am.

Am I being wound up here? On Saturday, 4 ball, average age 60, walking, competitive qualifier, handicaps 4 to 16, municipal course, no longer than 3 3/4 hours. What do you people do out there!?

It's because you play flat courses.

This is what I'm trying to figure out too? If we're early out we'll play, comfortably, in 3 - 3 1/2 hrs. 4 - 4 1/4 is all it should ever take. I don't understand how people try to justify that a round of golf should take any longer than 4 - 4 1/4 hours?

The key to fast play is to play fast.

There are no rules that will speed up slow people.

I really don't think anyone is trying to justify it. I think what most are saying is that it can't be done. Why? Because often times you're behind a slow group and that slow group isn't immediately in front of you. That slow group might 4 holes ahead of you. Since you're 4 holes behind the problem group that means there are probably 6 to 8 groups between you and the problem group. In theory, the group immediately behind the problem would play through the problem group, then each of the following faster groups catch up and play through, one by one. That theory is hard to implement in practice.

The key to making golf enjoyable for all is to realize that we are not all the same. Ya'll have to get out of your heads that 3 1/2 hours "should be" standard for a foursome on a public course on a Saturday afternoon.

It simply ain't gonna happen.

Also, playing "fast" is not enjoyable and more than playing "slow" is enjoyable.
Have to disagree considering the US Open used to be 36 holes on Sunday and they could finish without incident.

Unless you're playing for serious money there's no reason it should take over 3.5 hours, period. Some 25 handicap may enjoy his 15th practice swing in the nice outdoors, but it's completely obnoxious.
It's been shown over and over and over in the real world that most rounds simply cannot be played in 3 1/2 hrs. this is not theory it is fact.

For you people that think 3 1/2 hours should be "standard" then what is "fast"?
Agreed. I headed south a few hours this past weekend and played 36 on Sunday at Tangle Creek, the standard at the course was 4 hours and 30 minutes, even says so on the cart GPS screen. The carts GPS also showed whether you were ahead of pace or behind and by how many minutes. We were ahead of pace by 10 minutes and still being pushed by a foursome behind us yet we had to wait for about 30 seconds to 2 minutes for the foursome ahead of us on each hole, which is totally fine by us. Oh, we also had a 25+ handicap who can't break 100's and we still managed to finish on time. 3.5 hours as a standard? yea, right.
Hang on...you can't break 4 hours driving a vehicle between shots!?

Theres absolutely no reason for a round of golf to take more than 4 hours... I can accept 4 hours and 15 minutes but it should never take longer than that (for ams). When you look at private courses, 4 hours is pretty much the standard. I have played 4 weekend rounds this year at my club and the longest was 4 hours 10 minutes. That round was a men's club event with a pretty much full course and a shot gun start. We have A, B, C and D flight players. Handicaps ranging from 1.0 to 25. Again, with competition on the line, that round took 4 hours and 10 minutes.

There is 0 need for it to take longer. Public courses struggle to keep pace because they get less frequent golfers who don't understand the etiquette of ready play/keeping things moving and because they put the tee times too close together in order to get more players on the course. Tee Times should never be closer than 8 minutes apart. Hell at our club we moved to 10 minute intervals last year as a attempt to get rounds right at 4 hours or under on weekends. It worked like a charm.

My wife and I can go out on a weekday evening on an empty course and play 18 holes, walking, in 2 and half hours while still enjoying it. My wife has only played golf for 3 years. She, however, doesn't find it fun to be putting for a 11 or duffing balls all over the place. So she picks up when she's done with the hole and if she's struggling she will drop her ball by the green to chip and putt. On weekends she will play with my regular group to fill out the 4th. Never had a problem keeping up. This is how beginners and infrequent golfers should play. However, everyone places such a emphasis on following every single rule of the sport and finishing out every single shot. It's stupid really.

What other sport do you know of that ams play exclusively by the rules of the professional league in everyday play? I mean think about basketball. Many people play pick up hoops. Are you really calling traveling (unless excessive, but you know the extra half step on the way to the rack)? charges? Blocking? Typically games are played by 1s and 2s. The game only resembles the pros in the fact that it's 5 on 5 and you are putting the basketball in the hoop. Pickup football, baseball/softball, soccer, etc is the same. Why should golf be any different? Why do Ams need to play out every single hole? Why do they need to play stroke and distance if they can't find their tee ball?

There are so many ways to speed up the game but it starts with educating newer players on pace of play/ready golf and with courses not allowing the tee sheet to over flow with tee times stacked on top of each other.

The ubiquitous, boiler plate post on these slow play threads is: "My foursome, ages ____ to ____, HC's ___ to ___, play can play 18 in x.x hrs. I don't understand why everyone can't play at this pace.

It's because you guys are WRXers! 90% of the golfers out there are nowhere near as dedicated, interested, knowledgeable, or skillful (that includes pace of play skills) as you! If you are setting the bar, it is too high or of little interest for most of the golf community.

All of my hacker buddies that I play with 1 or 2 times/yr are aware of pace of play, they just don't think it is a BIG issue like most WRXers do.

Afternoon golf (especially weekends) for me exists only on the driving range.

Love the game but a muni (and even some private clubs these days) after 11:00 AM ain't the way golf was intended to be played.

Healthy 20 somethings riding in a golf cart speaks volumes.

This topic is starting to wear on me. I agree that a push to speed up play is a good thing for the sport, but golf is not a quick game and never will be. Some people are just going to have to temper their expectations when they go to the local muni for a Saturday morning tee time... For me personally, playing fast is no more enjoyable than playing slow, actually less enjoyable for that matter. I have rounds where I just want to get some swings in and I will play alone. These rounds I speed around very quickly. However, if I'm going out in a foursome with all my buddies, I would rather play slow than have someone with a timer chasing me around the course trying to rush our group. That seems ridiculous to me. If I'm off work and spending time at the course with my friends, and especially if the weather is nice, mark me down as a happy camper.

i have to agree that a lot of the problems are with people that don't know they are the problem...masters' weekend, i was paired in a foursome with a guy who grinded/practice swung over every shot on pace for 60 on the front 9...at the turn, the marshall informed us it took 2:25 to finish the front and we needed to pick it up so everybody could get home in time for the tournament (he was right)...and of course, that guy is the one who was offended...thankfully, he and his buddy left at hole 14...

Look guys, no amount of campaigning is going to change 5 million golfers who just aren't that dedicated to the game to care about learning how to shave an extra 1/2 hr off of their rounds.

"There's absolutely no reason for a round of golf to take more than 4 hours"

And yet it does the vast majority of the time...
Not to call you out but you are the problem and you probably don't even know it. 4 hours is the max it should take, even on Saturday morning. Guys that think it should take longer are wrong. Guys that say it DOES take longer are stating facts, but that doesn't mean it should be the norm. Lots of people coast around the course using terms like "enjoying my day off" and "what's the rush in going back home". These people annoy me to no end. If you can't enjoy yourself playing in 4 hours or less, YOU should leave. The rest of the people are normal, not you.
Well, at least I know who to call with all of my questions about "right and wrong" and what constitutes "normal" now.

I'd bet that you get "annoyed to no end" at your wife (if you have one) when she wants to take a little longer than you to get "satisfaction". But then again, I get the impression that everything is all about you.

I had two great rounds this past week. I may have stumbled onto something here. I played as a twosome riding starting at 3pm on Thur. We were done in 3 hrs. and that was being stuck behind a fivesome for the last 3 holes. I had to work Sun. I decided to go out at 3 pm. again. Walking 18 I got done in 2 hrs.20 mins.Last week I started at 2:30 as a single walking. I got done 14 holes in 2 hrs then it took me 1hr 15 mins finishing up 4 holes being stuck behind a twosome and foursome. Three o'clock might be the time to avoid everyone. My group I usually play with starts at 1 pm. It doesn't matter how many we have that day we always get done around 5:30- 6 pm. If I can start at 3 pm and still get done by 6 pm without waiting on people I might stay at 3 pm.

The key to fast play is to play fast.

There are no rules that will speed up slow people.

Now off to straighten out that climate change something or other I've been hearing about.....

I won't go up and quote both replies but again, aggressive responses from people who are probably slow players. People don't like to be "TOLD" to speed up. And the others follow the new age modo of "if you can't beat them, join them." And to the guy who said that's just the way "it is"... I can't argue with that, you are right. But I don't have to like it and I'll post about it all I want. To the other dude talking about my wife, too funny.

As long as I can't get stung through a computer screen, sure. :)

Seriously through, I'm just tired of reading about all this stupid BS that can be done to fix golf. You can't fix golf, golf is golf until you make it something else. You have to fix people....and that ain't gonna happen, so everyone just needs to get over it.

We live in a society of increasingly more self absorbed, inconsiderate, lazy, self righteous people. That's the problem. And those people don't give a crap about any rules you write to fix them.

It is not a fact.

In the groups where I play, 3 1/2 hours is slow. 2:45 - 3:15 is the norm, with most at about 3 hours. The REALLY fast groups play in 2:20-2:30, with a couple of walkers. I think 2:20 is too fast for walkers, although I have been in those groups, but 2:45 - 3:00 is an enjoyable pace.

Look up the definition of most. Also take into consideration age/ course length/ slope/ rating/ terrain/ distance between tee boxes and greens/ public or private and numerous other things. What he stated is a FACT while you stated an opinion and an exception to the norm.
