Good point about proximity. 2 from east coast is good given the added flight expense. I'm from Portland so 4 isn't that impressive. I could add 1-2 more trips with money from an east coast flight!

Future posters, please state your home location for some context.

Maybe this is cheating on this subject, but I live here in Bandon & am an original member & VP of the Golf Club at Bandon Dunes. Been playing here since there were just the first 9 holes (back nine) at Bandon. Couldn't count the number of rounds, but at least 40 a year I would estimate. Know them all pretty well, except Old Mac- still learning.

I think that's like Tom Watson trying to get in on Brandt Snedeker's chipping contest in the VISA commercial...

2 trips now, both times in Feb with low rates. Always stop and play sandpines on the way down and get in 4 rounds. We always do the same setup. First day is drive down to sandpines and get a room. Then up and at the course early play our round then on the road for Bandon. First day at bandon is 3 rounds, second day 3 rounds. Third day two rounds and drive to portland. So only 16 rounds down in paradise, can't wait till February!!!

 • 3 months later...

Just got back from my first trip. Every bit as impressive as led to believe. Pacific Dunes is the most impressive golf course I've ever played.

10 hour drive over for me.
4 days, 7 rounds. 2 on Bandon Dunes, 2 on Old Mac, 1 each on Pacific Dunes, Bandon Trails, and the Preserve.

The Preserve is a lot of fun, but the only one there not worth the price (75 bucks) in my opinion.

Already looking at another trip.

0830 on day one, 0800 on day 2. I went as a single, and didn't make tee times for the afternoon rounds, just asked at the shop where they could fit me in. Made it pretty easily both days.

I've been twice and just left to come back home yesterday. I am from NC so a 10 hour trip for me.

Metal, do you know why they don't leave the Punchbowl set up all day? Honestly, that is the only thing that took away from the trip. Being east coast time, we were up every morning at 4 and opening our breakfast place of choice. We usually wanted to go to the Punchbowl and play a quick match before heading to the practice area and they always took the hole locations up. Plus, they had the greens on the Punchbowl running half the speed of the rest of the resort. It was like putting on shag carpet. When we went in the late afternoon, half the resort was there which was great fun but we went 36 holes on the Punchbowl without ever having the waitress have enough time to come serve us a beer. They needed 5 waitresses out there. They missed a real opportunity to make a ton of cash on beer sales. I would have 2 mobile keg carts out there that they could move around the outside of the green filling beers and taking cash.

Outside of that, the trip was an absolute blast.

Generally, I agree with you. However, we went on an 8-man trip this past March, and they rejiggered things a bit for our Preserve round so that we could all go out together as one group. That was a LOT of fun - and made it well worth the cost.

But I've now played Preserve twice, and we'll definitely skip it on the next trip.

Coming from Alberta Canada I've taken 4 trips...

1st trip was March 2012- played 6 rounds (4 days)
2nd trip April 2013- played 8 rounds (5 days)
3rd trip December 2013- played 8 rounds (5 days)
4th trip November 2014 (last week)- played 6 rounds (4 days)

4 trips, 28 rounds, next trip booked in March 2015!!

Favourite courses in order:

1a. Pacific- love the uniqueness of the Back 9 with only 2 Par 4's, #11 is the best Par 3 I've ever played, #10-14 is the best stretch of holes on the property.
1b. Bandon- #4 is one of the best uses of the ocean backdrop you'll see anywhere. #16 is one of the best risk/reward par 4's in the world. Has a few more underwhelming holes than Pacific in my opinion (#2, #10, #18 come to mind)
1c. Trails- I always describe this as "the best golf course on the property" It does a masterful job using the natural landscape and is really a stunning layout. Standing alone I think this is a top 25 golf course in the country, it gets overshadowed by the other which isn't a bad thing...hidden gem. Best view of the property near #14 tee.
1d- Old Mac- I personally love it, but I've played with many people who skip it during their trip, which in my opinion is a shame. It's such a tribute to links golf and something you can't find in a lot of places outside of Great Britain. I love the course and make sure I always play it every trip.

The Preserve is the best par 3 course in the world (sorry Augusta). To be able to play with 4-8 buddies and have KPs, skins, sink huge breaking putts, get short sided in a bunker, and then putt down #13 is something you can't find anywhere else! Absolute the most fun you can have with a golf bag strapped to your back on the property...

Which brings me to the Punchbowl! What a genius idea this is!! Games that follow the 18 hole putting course often wind up with a throwback to your younger days on the putting green picking holes at random seeing how crazy you can get! I've never heard more laughs, more cheers and jeers than I have spending a few hours on the Pb. Not to mention the servers come out the green and serve you drinks... :drinks:

If you've never been I can't recommend it enough!

wholeinone thanks for the write up! If I could have an every day course it would be Trails. We split hairs about our favorite. I love them all!

I need to get on the Sheep Ranch one day.

New out of country leader in the house. 11/12/14. His name is wholeinone.

out of country, "6" trips 29 rounds.

Actually it is really 3 trips to Bandon with 25 rounds and another 3 trips that I stopped at Bandon on the way to or from somewhere and played 6 more rounds.

This is of course is counting the Preserve (4 rounds) .

When we visit Bandon we usually play two rounds a day for 4 days. I have played 3 rounds a few days too, so my number of nights at Bandon is way less then my number of rounds.
