Hackers course in Portland?

Can someone recommend a course in Portland, OREGON that's not likely to be busy. Want to go with a few people that have never golfed before.

They border on being goat tracks but McKay Creek, Killarney, and Colwood would be my recommendations.

All goats, yes.

Keep in mind Colwood (in its previous form) is actually closed. It's a driving range now and they're putting in an executive/par 3 course.

Just look at any of the country courses (they're all goats). Mountain View, Sandelie, Ranch Hills, Eagle Creek, Springwater.... have you thought about taking them to Sah Hah Lee or even the pub course at Edgefield?

Try Pumkin Ridge or the Reserve.

You guys could go chop it around at Wildwood, just 15 minutes north of Portland on Hwy 30. Fun little course.

Great little course and even better views but the elevation changes and OBs will kill new players.

Quail Valley, Wildwood are decent courses that fit the bill.

If you really want very basic courses, then Rock Creek.

Then there is the 9 hole courses...Claremont, etc.

Personally I wouldn't consider taking newbies to a full sized course. It might scare them off from the game. I would try a par 3 like Sah-ha-lee or Lake Oswego muni. They both have driving ranges also.

Interesting comment about Rock Creek. Have you played it recently? I've been a member there for at least 8 years, also playing frequently all around the area, and I wouldn't consider it very basic. It is definitely a traditional design but it has mature trees so it is one of the tighter courses around. Also over the last 3-4 years, since the management failed to sell it for housing due to the market crash, they have improved the course a lot and put money back into it. They added a lot of drainage and the greens are some of the fastest now that they have a roller.

That said, the bunkers are crap. I call the sand "Columbia River Silt". Just horrible. But I still love the place. It is so affordable for a membership so I can still go play other courses. Plus we have a good men's club and overall just down to earth members that want to play golf.

I don't think it is semi public anymore either. I think they stopped selling rounds on golfnow.com.

I'd call it basic+. On the level of all the good munis in terms of design but with greens as fast as any you will find in Portland, giving it an edge. Also this is anecdotal evidence but anytime I bring people in as guests they struggle a lot with the course because it can get tight on some holes and again they are not used to the greens.

Ended up playing McKay Creek. Quite busy but worked out fine. Didn't get a tee time soon enough for the nice courses and they were booked. Ended up playing Charbonneau. First time I broke 100... shot an 88.

Congrats on the hole in one at Fiddler's! It used to be a must stop for me when I would go down to Eugene, but last time I was down there, it was about 95% clothes, 5% golf goods, which, working in a golf shop now, didn't appeal to me at all.
