Member/Guest Etiquette Question

When you invite someone to participate in your member/guest, do you have them pay half of the entry fee? Or do you just take care of it since they are your guest? And if you take care of the fee, do you split the winnings with them?

 

Our M/G is a fantastic event, but fairly expensive. Just curious what other people do.

Its split for entry and winnings.

I take care of all fees for my guest. The guest takes care of our betting which is maybe 1/10th of the fee. Winnings, if any, are split.

Every time I have been a guest the fees were paid by the member. Therefore I have always done the same.

Not a member at a club, but a lot of my clients are or own courses. Played in many M/G and as AZ2AU notes this is what I have experienced. Now I would say the bettering gets higher than 1/10th... the Calcutta can get up there fast if word gets out your team is stacked.

Generally, entry is the member's cost. Betting is split and winnings shared, but there's no hard/fast rule on this.

I don't know anyone that has their guest pay for their own entry, or even half of it. We just had our member guest, and I took care of the full cost of entry. We don't have betting in our event, just draws for lots of prizes, and a gift for everyone who is involved.

When I belonged to a club, I paid all fees, and paid for the betting. Winnings were always split. It is, after all, called a "Member/Guest," not a "Member/Partner."

I play in one locally as a guest. This means that I have next to nothing extra out of pocket to play in the event; in the form of gas, travel, hotel, extras. I'm sleeping in my own bed and traveling to play golf at course I could be playing anyway. For this, we split the cost 50/50. All the betting, entry fee, tips, side games, all of that just about works out to 50/50. And then, the winnings are split 50/50 (or we roll it into the smaller 1 day event later in September...)

Now, If I was flying somewhere, getting a hotel, renting a car, etc, I would suspect that I wouldn't be shelling out that money AND paying for the part of the entry fee. The betting, yes, but the entry I would suggest be part of the invite, and unfortunately my money would be going to me getting there.

I think it depends on the relationships. I belong to two clubs and have a friend at one club that I play with occasionally and we usually play in the member - member together. I asked him if he wanted to play in the member guest at my other club and split the cost, and he was happy to do. He owns his own business, and we don't do anything together than play golf.

I would not ask a friend or work relationship to share the cost - in this case he was more my partner for the day than guest. I did pick up all the extras using my member number.

I also think that reciprocating or a gift is an appropriate gesture when getting an invite as a true guest.

I think that it might depend on the level of friendship between the member and that guest. Me personally if I invited someone to play in the event I would cover the fees as they are my guest as most likely someone that I would want to entertain for a few days at my course.

As far as the betting, that is something you can determine with your guest. I know for me in member guests I want to get in on the action as it keeps me interested and so it does not totally turn into drunk fest on the course. So I would always get in on that.

To each his own though. I can see it both ways as it can get pricey. Either way go out an have a blast. Usually one of the best events of the year, at least at the courses I have been at.

I cover the full cost of the entry. I've split betting and paid for all betting as both the member and the guest.

My M/G partner is now a member at a very expensive club with a few current and retired professional athletes. We are playing in the M/G this year and I hope it is a straight buyout and not a Calcutta...not sure my pockets are deep enough.

We have monthly MGs, and a once a year, grand affair one. Depending on the guest, I'll pay for both of us for the monthly ones, bit I'm not quite in a time of life, with two little ones in day care, where my wife would be ok with me dropping a couple grand on a golf tourney, even if it is once a year.

Based on relationship I think. Most I have ever done (both ways) have been split as it has been with my buddies. I think it is only fair. One year my dad was the guest and I covered everything.

I play in 2 of these annually and always pay my half of the entry fee, calcuttta's etc.
