Anti sh**k swing keys

Probably covered in a lot of threads, but I'm hoping for a summary-type thread;

 

What are your keys to stay clear of the sh**k?

Don't let the club head be too far away from you at impact. Keys depend on the cause. Could be swinging too out to in or in to out. So therefore keys would be different for each.

A shank doesn't exist. Even when it happens, it didn't.

For me, keeping the arms passive and swinging in-to-out have eliminated shanking the ball. A smooth turn away from the ball and a swing that relies on body rotation rather than arm swing are the keys, as far as I'm concerned.

*disclaimer - I am not a teaching professional (or even a good golfer), I am simply explaining what has worked for me in terms of striking the ball more cleanly (can't remember the last shank I hit).

Keep your hands close to the body at address.
Stay connected with your arms and shoulders throughout your swing (if your hands are too far away at setup it's more likley you get disconnected).
Have enough width in your swing, meaning distance from your hands to your body in the backswing.
Make a good shoulder turn.
Swing on plane and not too flat. A flat backswing can cause a too far inside to outside swing which will result in shanking the ball.
Check your allignment - bad allignment can cause a shank too.
Keep your weight balanced and not too much on your toes.
Don't push your hips outside towards the ball in the downswing.

As a 15 year chronic shanker,2 simple keys for me that always work are:

1.Be sure the clubhead is whipping or releasing through impact.No conscious "holding" of angles (in an attempt for more power and no casting) as that is a sure shank for me with the hosel leading into the ball.

2.Feel like my hands are very close to my thighs through impact.

I don't have a "good" swing but those 2 keys are what have eliminated my shanks whenever they creep in.

I just went through a two frustrating day bout with them. Monte helped me fix them by pointing out my long backswing was leading to excess movements which I needed to remove. My head was rising in the downswing which caused early extension which pushed my hands away which led to me have the golf equivalent of a panic attack.

The shanks are like quicksand, if you get them slow down and figure out why it happened (use your phone to film your swing) instead of getting frustrated and pounding more balls which could sink you deeper in and harm your swing further.

I suffer from the voldemorts periodically and I am currently enjoying remission. I know the pain and would do anything to make sure someone doesn't have to experience them or feel the panic like symptoms creep in.

My keys have been:

Make sure my weight is in the middle of my feet. I have a tendency to get on my toes which often leads to el hosel.

TURN!!! This was most evident in video. I thought I would be making a turn but in reality I was making this handsy, all arms, gross swing at the ball. On video it almost looked like I was giving up.

Release the clubhead. Trying to "hold" or "create" lag is stupid and a one way ticket to panic, an open face, and high scores.

Tempo. Take a deep breath and regroup and stay within yourself.

Don't get to quick in the transition as you probably aren't turning but shooting your hips laterally so much that your hands can't catch up. At least this is what it feels like with me.

Don't panic. Don't sit over the ball with a crap load of swing thoughts. Hit a couple balls where you literally walk up and swing and you'll be amazed at the results. It is a good quick confidence booster.

Take these for what they are. I don't know jack about any other swing beside mine but these seem to help.

You need to figure out what exactly your hitting. You can shank it with an open/closed and in-out/out-in path. The fix for them are different and may cause you to shank more.

I can hit them when I:
* Get the weight on my toes
* Trying to hard to make the biggest turn in the world which only leads to me swaying.
* Getting too handsy.
