NYC/Staten Island

Any players on here from NYC? I'm on Staten Island. Traffic makes it convenient for me to stay on the Island, but I can travel around a bit too.

I'm in Upstate NY, but I travel down to Brooklyn to visit. Where in Staten Island do you play? I've only played at Forrest Park and Marine Park in terms of City courses. Have also played the Black.

I'm a 'member' at LaTourette on Staten Island. Member is a joke really, places here don't have memberships, I simply have a handicap there. I've played the other two public courses on SI, but one stinks and the other is on the opposite side of the island. I've also played Bethpage Red once, want to get out and play the Black before it closes for the season.

As a funny tangent, it's interesting that you're from "Upstate NY." Prior to moving here in June, if you said "upstate" I would have assumed some place like Albany, Syracuse, or something. Now, I talk to people and they say "upstate" clearly talking about something that's in Westchester County. It's quite interesting how that works.

La Tourette is a great course! I also liked south shore.

Have you played in Brooklyn? Like dyker beach and marine park? Those are good too!

Also I would suggest split rock golf course in the bronx.

I have not played Dyker Beach, Marine Park, or Split Rock. Haven't been around for long enough yet, but they will happen. Dyker Beach is actually the closest course to me, but I have to pay on the VZ bridge to get there.

Where do you play? I'm looking for some folks to maybe get a semi-regular game.

I'm in Schenectady NY (outside of Albany), the 'real' Upstate. LOL. Next time I'm venturing down, I'll give you a shout. I also want to play Bethpage before they close. Will be in touch.

Marine park Is by far the best course in NYC. New management pumping money into the course. Amazing shape its in. They are hoping for an LPGA or champions event in the coming years

despite all the $$ marine park is pumping in, the layout isnt nearly as interesting or challenging as split rock in the bronx from the back tees... split rock is a 72.7 128 on a par 71 lay out, marine park is a 72.7 123 on a par 72 layout. i take split rock over MP every time and have played both (as well as all the SI course) multiple times. i do like what they are doing to marine park and i think it's on its way, but its just not there yet. they'd also be smart to rename the place if they're chasing a tournament. The Links at Brooklyn Marsh or Kings County National have decent rings to it.

The greens at Marine Park (or any public course for that matter) are what makes it a great course. They are as fast, if not faster than many private courses on the island or westchester county. I also wouldn't suggest playing ANY of these courses after 8am on a weekend.

I agree that Split Rock has a better layout, and the elevation changes and all the trees are nice. Marine Park has the best greens in the city though imo, and the wind is usually howling which adds an interesting challenge.

LaTourette is the best public layout in NYC. Split Rock probably 2nd.

Lived in western Queens and played LaToureet every weekend when I first started playing,,,,,,,,,,,, until I realized that Bethpage was just about equi-distant and then began playing the Black every weekend. [size=4] [/size]

what i'll ask to you hypotheticallly is the following then - how can the layout be so good if its merely a 71.7/121 on a par 72 from 6708 whereas split rock is 72.7 128 on a par 71 from about 6650?

it's all a moot point anyway b/c once ferry point opens, that takes the cake by such a wide margin it won't even be funny.

fair rebuttal. latourette isn't bad, far from it. i just enjoy the split rock layout more and find it a better challenge as well.

Do you guys from NYC ever come up to Westchester/Putnam/Dutchess to play your rounds? I live in White Plains and play the few local public courses but usually play in Dutchess/Putnam on weekends. There are a few good public courses in that neck of the woods if you are willing to make the trip.
