Pet peeve: cart wheels off path.

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this has been done before; I sort of searched and only found something from 2008.

What compels someone to drive up to the tee box on the cart path, and when they're parking, move over so 2 wheels are in the grass?

Oh, did I say, "grass"? I meant that muddy trough that should be grass if everyone didn't drive their cart up to the tee box and park with two wheels off the path.

Same guy drives behind the green on the path, and does the same thing over again.

Is someone parking on the grass 100% of the time so that the 1% of the time a cart has to get past them, they don't have to put their wheels. . .on the grass?

You see the same damage often on the inside of curves around the course. This is a wonderful time-saving measure. . .two guys driving from one ball to the other all over the course, but they're cutting the apex on the chicane to take .01 seconds off their lap times.

From my point of view. . .it's just a cosmetic issue. I'm not Carl Spackler. But part of what's nice about being on a golf course is a well-manicured look, no? And, there's literally, nothing to be gained from the behavior.

Agree - keep the carts on the cart paths, particularly near tees and greens. It seems that some people think they've rented an ATV instead of a cart! :swoon:

Unfortunately common sense isn't common.

We even have the mini stakes on the corners and other spots that get "tracked" and those almost always end up buried in the ground by some jackwagon that can't drive.

While some of it is people being knuckleheads, part of it is poor path design.

it isn't rocket science to widen the paths in certain places to accommodate this.

This. Either widen the paths OR add a curb. Funny how much a couple inch curb stops this.

Doesn't matter how wide the path is, they will still pull over until they are on the grass. Curbing (or railway ties) are the only way to stop them but that is tough to do around greens. The same people will throw a beverage can into the woods 5 feet away from the recycling receptacle.

Or get rid of carts and cart paths. An amazing improvement to the aesthetic.

I see this all the time at the course where I work. It drives the staff crazy.

No matter how many times you tell the violators they just continue doing things their way.

We have idiots on our course who do that too, they just do not understand the concept that "cart paths are for carts" either driving on or parking. I see carts parked totally on the grass near greens quite often...usually it's people who are too lazy to walk more than ten steps to a green. I think they'd actually park right smack next to the green if they could get away with it. On our courses, on every par 3 there's a little sign that says "no carts on par 3's".....guess what, there are folks who drive right down par 3's if they miss the green short & they'll be offended if anyone tells them not to.

Can you tell it's nearing the end of the summer season & us "full timers" are getting very weary of the "summer people" taking up so much space on our golf courses??? :dntknw:

It's much easier to peel out and spin donuts on grass than on a path. Coefficient of friction bro!

I kid, I kid. As I mentioned in another thread, some people are just a$7)&@s.

I have a buddy that literally seems to go out of his way to drive on the grass. He's slowly learning the concept though, so I give him that. And yes, I point it out just about every time.

Q: How is the tailgater in the other cart supposed to know when the lead cart intends to slow down / stop?

A: The lead cart pulls over to the side (onto the grass) and slows down / parks.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but I've been rear-ended enough times to know that that is probably the reason some people pull over to the side instinctively. They've been conditioned!

It really is amazing how much more beautiful walking courses are compared to modern courses.

I'm sure many of this world's ills could be alleviated (least of all golfers driving their carts off the edge of the paved path onto grass) if financial considerations were not an issue.

Our course alternates starting tee every week, when it's ten if you don't pull onto the grass it creates a huge jam up as there is so much traffic past the tee due to the lay out of the course, the result is of course a giant mud hole.

One of my regular playing partners is getting old and uses his age as an excuse to run the cart everywhere, I have seen him go between green and bunker where there is not room for it thus (besides the fact the course doesn't allow it) he runs over the green with two wheels, on one course he has created a path/shortcut through one of the nature areas that are off limits to every one rather than follow the cart path to the next tee that goes around it, he has run down the cart path only sign to gain access to a new fairway that was just put back into play and he left huge ruts in it, after he got chewed out by the staff we asked why did he run the sign down his answer "it was the only place not roped off". But the best was when he did the hill climb up to a green that is perched atop a hill the path winds around to the backside where it runs level with the green but rather than drive around he goes straight up the front slope, upon reaching the top he could not get the cart to stay in place so he hangs the front wheels onto the edge of the green and climbs out to putt, the head of the ground crew was trimming trees on an adjacent hole and climbed down to come over and chew him out but then stopped and just stood shaking his head and staring in disbelief. It's so bad I'm on the verge of leaving the group due to his antics with carts.

The best I've seen is a course that layed cobblestones on all the corners/tee areas that would get excessive wear from wandering carts. They set them such that every other one was high so when running the cart over it it was really rough but they were low enough the mowers could still pass over with out damage, worked like a charm.

At my course we built curbs into the paths so you cant really get off the path by a tee box unless you wanna jump a curb. But we do have a couple places were you can pull off to the side of the path. Our 4th hole has a water jug. So if I pull up ahead of someone I will pull my cart to the side so they can get around me when I fill up my water bottle. But I am also one of those lazy peoples that will pull my cart closer to a tee box even if it means getting off the path. Definitely wouldnt do it if the it was soggy or wet, but if its dry I will.
