Ever do something so stupid that you just have to laugh?

Here's the build-up . . .

 

I'm 35 years old. I purchased my first cell phone 2 weeks ago (an i-phone 5c) as my wife thought that we should own one for safety reasons. I held out as long as possible as I'm a bit of a luddite.

 

Tonight I was sprung for a twilight practice round. The course was filled with women, as it was league night. Fivesomes galore. I played the holes out of order to avoid groups and eventually found myself next to the 18th tee box on an empty golf course as the sun was setting. It was at this moment that I received a text message from Kadin25. I thought I had my phone set to airplane mode, but that was not the case. Don't know why, but I thought it would be humorous to Face Time with Kadin before I hit my final tee shot, and that's when it happened . . .

 

Kadin asked to see my final swing. I tried to prop the phone against my putter at the edge of my putter well (I own a Sun Mountain Sync bag). As I was fumbling with the phone it slipped out of my hand and fell down the darn well. Kadin now found himself at the bottom of my bag looking at my iron tubes. I frantically attempted to fish out the phone, using my putter and 3 wood, but to no avail. Kadin bounced around the bottom of the bag and we carried on our conversation (all the while laughing). It was at this moment that Kadin suggested that I empty my bag. I proceeded to pull each club out, spreading them across the grass next to the tee box. I flipped the bag upside down and began to shake it up and down, all the while speaking to Kadin.

 

Murphy's Law: The number of people watching you is directly proportional to the stupidity of your action.

 

It was then that I began to hear a motor and eventually the course owner emerged from behind the trees, riding his fertilizing machine. The course Marshall following beside in a cart. They caught me 'red handed' with my bag in hand and my clubs spread all over the ground. Heck, I must have looked like a 'crazy man'. I attempted to explain myself, while talking to Kadin.

 

Eventually Kadin slid down the putter tube. Being the stubborn man that I am, I propped my phone on the top of the cart. I fully expected to stripe my Wishon F/D down the fairway, but smothered the ball and it travelled 120 yards.

 

New rule . . . the phone is going to be left in the car.

 

So let's hear the stories. I can't be the only fool. Who else has experienced an embarrassing/stupid moment on the golf course?

 

I think I know how DuffnersWaggle felt when he glued his fingers together : )

Pretty much my first 3 or 4 holes of tournaments back in high school would be like 10 over for those holes then shoot 90. lol can't really think of a specific instance off hand right now.

I have two I can think of:

1. On more than one occasion I have walked off the green carrying the flag with me (forgetting to put it back in the hole).

2. Leaving my clubs at the golf course...having completely forgotten to put them in my truck after I went into the club house to clean up after my round.

ps: I find the older I get, the frequency of these moments occur at a frightening rate.

I'm sure you'll be playing a lot of golf in your twilight years (is that where I am...in my twilight years?). That is why I play so much golf now. I have a lot of catching up to do.

I've told this before, anyhoo

Playing the Old Course in St.Andrews with three good pals 2 years ago.

On about the 12th hole I say to my looper, good call on the club Dan (Real name forgotten). I was very very close to his name ... and he said "actually my name is Don". I was embarrassed and felt awful for having his name wrong for 2.5 hrs

Then it gets fun.

My big red headed Scots buddy who had organized the whole trip jokingly gets right in my face and says very loudly and rife with sarcasm "you are a hungover drunken sh_t show Cardy. .. You don't even know your caddy's name and we are well into the back 9." He thinks he's Hamish from Braveheart apparently

He then turns to his caddy and says "Can you believe this Curt?" At which point my buddy's caddy calmly says "my name is Kevin sir"

Hilarity ensued .. I couldn't stop laughing, and the single malts I had grabbed after 9 (hair of the dog), were certainly helping

Our group of 8 on our golf Mecca trip still bust his balls over it

Freshman year of high school with 3 couples already in the Ford Ranch Wagon, I nervously walked up the stairs of the porch to pick up my homecoming date Melanie Waskoviak. As I tripped on the top step of the stairs, my glasses went flying and landed at the feet of Melanie's father who stuck his hand out and said "you must be DavePelz4."

To make things better, she dumped me at the dance and went home with one of my friends.

That moment will never leave and will always generate a laugh.

That's one of my little peanuts. The other is only 3 1/2 months old but I hope to take a picture with him holding my other hand (under that same tree) someday.

That darn tree gives me fits. Literally blocks 1/2 of the fairway on a long par 5. I can't get over the thing now that I've lowered the loft on my driver. I have to hit a draw into a fairway that's not very wide with a cornfield on the right and a ditch that runs along the left side.

Oh I also had quite a mishap with my wife

We are en route to 6th tee at my old club 10 yrs ago. Couples night and all four of us have had a few adult beverages

Stars aligned

We are in our cart heading into basically a hard hairpin turn left
I am driving too fast (ahhh hindsight)
My wife is not holding the roof or side handle ... She has a glass of wine in her right hand
Her left leg is crossed over her right
As the exact moment we hit the apex of our turn, I have my right arm around her shoulder and I decide to tickle her "side"

She flinched and as we powered around the corner she was ejected right out of the cart

About 5 years ago, I had to hit out of a steep fairway bunker on one of the first holes during a sunrise round. Tossed my club softly onto the grass after the shot, raked the sand and inserted the rake into my bag. I didn't even notice until we got to the green. I clearly cannot function that early without coffee.
