Ever do something so stupid that you just have to laugh?

PeanutsDaddy

Recommended Posts

The week before last, on Sunday, I striped a drive down the right center of the fairway on the 18th, a par 5. I needed birdie to tie or eagle to win. I chunked my six iron so bad that it came up a hundred yards short in the marsh fronting the green. Not even close to clearing the hazard!

What else could I do, but laugh? "Oh, well, maybe next week", I thought.

Oh I also had quite a mishap with my wife

We are en route to 6th tee at my old club 10 yrs ago. Couples night and all four of us have had a few adult beverages

Stars aligned

We are in our cart heading into basically a hard hairpin turn left
I am driving too fast (ahhh hindsight)
My wife is not holding the roof or side handle ... She has a glass of wine in her right hand
Her left leg is crossed over her right
As the exact moment we hit the apex of our turn, I have my right arm around her shoulder and I decide to tickle her "side"

She flinched and as we powered around the corner she was ejected right out of the cart

I took my son to a golf lesson at a range I have never been to before. We get there a little early to warm up. I lasered a flag at 135 yds. The wind was slightly in our face.

I hit a couple of wedges to warm up then pulled out my 8 iron. When swinging well, I am 150 yds. When swinging hectic, I am 140 yds. I hit a shot that landed short of the green. I then hit about 5 more that was the same. I figured the wind would be a little factor but not that much. I am now focused, mad, worried, embarrassed at the same time. I set up proper. Take my time. Hit the perfect swing and it landed at the flag. That ball should have been over the green. I then proceed to swing so hard over the next 10 minutes just to try to hit the ball over the green only to hurt my back and the side where my ribs are.

The instructor comes and notices me holding my side because of the pain and asks what is wrong. I told him the story and then he hands me a ball showing me the stamp that says limited flight. I was playing these Dang balls the whole time and never knew it.

This is not the most embarrassing story but one that just happened.

I'm reading through this thread and I don't know how I should feel. I've worn sandals to work with a shirt and tie, two different shoes and socks, taken a rake with me to my bag and walked to the tee with a putter as well. Should I feel like an uber moron for doing all of these things (and more), or be happy that other's have experienced these moments as well?

My life can be a three ring circus at times.

I've told this before, anyhoo

Playing the Old Course in St.Andrews with three good pals 2 years ago.

On about the 12th hole I say to my looper, good call on the club Dan (Real name forgotten). I was very very close to his name ... and he said "actually my name is Don". I was embarrassed and felt awful for having his name wrong for 2.5 hrs

Then it gets fun.

My big red headed Scots buddy who had organized the whole trip jokingly gets right in my face and says very loudly and rife with sarcasm "you are a hungover drunken sh_t show Cardy. .. You don't even know your caddy's name and we are well into the back 9." He thinks he's Hamish from Braveheart apparently

He then turns to his caddy and says "Can you believe this Curt?" At which point my buddy's caddy calmly says "my name is Kevin sir"

Hilarity ensued .. I couldn't stop laughing, and the single malts I had grabbed after 9 (hair of the dog), were certainly helping

Our group of 8 on our golf Mecca trip still bust his balls over it
Ha! Great story, Bob.

Honest, this was NOT me. The most embarassing moment I've ever seen. We had weapon inspection once per month at line-up at the police department. When the Sargeant asked one of my fellow officers for his weapon, he was our range instructor btw, the guy reaches into his holster and comes up empty handed. He doesn't say a word and walks straight out the back door into his car. He FORGOT his gun!!!

Trust me....as a former police officer I've had and seen plenty of embarrassing moments, but this one took the cake.

On the golf course....trying to tee off with a putter is about as bad as it's gotten....yes, that WAS me.

Happened during my now bro in law's golf outing before getting hitched to my sister. We were playing a hole on the side of a mountain where everything kicks from right to left. My buddy hits his shot unto the side of the mountain and doesnt get a friendly bounce and is held up buy a rock or whatever. My buddy who is accident prone and not the sharpest guy, decided to take the golf cart up the side of a grassy hill to retrieve his golf ball. Of course he ignored the big signs that say no carts on the hill. Half way up he realizes that the morning dew is causing the wheel of the golf cart to spin out not letting him go any higher up the hill, mind you he has managed to get pretty high up. Well instead of letting the golf cart just slowly roll itself down, he turns the wheel in order for him to face forward. Sure enough, he thinks he has made it completely around and presses on the accelerator ( i would say gas peddle but this happens to be an electric cart). Well sure enough he begins to race down the hill and freaks out and steps on the brake. Well he of course begins to do a 360 degree spin several times while heading down hill. He freaks out again and jumps out since the cart and he were headed towards a bunker on the other part of the fairway. Sure enough again, as he jumps out, the cart straightens its self out as the hill begins to flatten out and he is literally ghost riding the golf cart as he is running right next to it. Well everybody on the adjacent holes along with my brothers and other friends are staring at this happen. We all realize he and the golf cart are both still headed towards the bunker at the other side of the fairway. We yell for him to get out of the way when my buddy, decides to jump back on the golf cart and manages to hit the brake and stop the golf cart before it makes its way into the bunker. All we could do is laugh our heads off. Not only did he manage to cause the situation, he rode it through and stopped it before it became a disaster. I bring that story up every time we play that hole and all we can do is chuckle, even now.

First time at a driving range and I finally got my dad to let me use his clubs. I always thought golf would be fun and begged and begged him and he said me and my buddy could take his clubs over to the range, "just make sure to take care of them." "Of course, of course," I told him.

Well we get there and I actually started making contact wih a couple so we decide to just out the driver. I barely hit a few and decide to really "keep my head down" on the next one and proceed to catch a little more of the mat than intended. I then think to myself I am going to stay down and crush the next one. So I try to get in what I think is my best stance and position (this is my first experience actually being at a range or course) and take a big rip!!! "Wow that felt so smooth and the club felt so incredibly light when I hit the ball almost as if I hit nothing! I guess this is that butter feeling everyone talks about!" One thing that did stand out as odd was the three people to my left who all ducked, I mean, I still had the club in my hands, it's not like I threw it. Then I realize what happened... The driver head was still airborn and on its way to the 100 yard marker!!!! At this point all I could think of was how my dad would kill me. So I go to the other 12 people lined up at at the range and ask them to stop hitting so I can go retrieve the driver head. I have never been so embarrassed and scared at the same time. I kept looking over my shoulder hoping some wise guys weren't going to start peppering me with balls.

I didn't golf again for another few years but even this experience couldn't keep me from the game I knew I loved. I will definitely never forget my first golfing experience and it makes me and just about everyone I tell the story to crack up, which makes it totally worth it!

I did so many stupid things when I was young playing golf that it is almost shameful looking back on it. I could regale you with the stories but I won't bother. Being stupid cost me tournaments and it even almost cost me my ride in college. Fast forward a couple decades away from the game and now I am much more self aware. Whereas when I was young I did stupid things without thinking about it, I now do stupid things by announcing to the people I am playing with that I am about to do something really stupid because I know the thing I am about to do is really stupid. Progress I guess.....

Every time I'm twirling my putter around and then catch my ankle bone I'm reminded of why I swore I would never twirl my putter around anymore... Usually after a lot of cursing and whimpering I then laugh about it. Then swear to never do it again, again.

***2 Months Later***

Repeat
OMG. For seriously.

About 3 months ago, I just let my 55* wedge 'fall' from my finished swing towards the ground (still holding on to it, not thinking) after a pured shot to the green (3' from the pin) and the leading edge of the wedge caught me SQUARE on the right ankle. "Ow. Fudge! Mutha! Grap! Son of a...!" So I started walking it off. Almost on the green, I look down, and I had Curt Schilling'd myself (for those unfamiliar, it was bleeding through my sock).

It was this here that taught me a coulpe valuable lessons.

1) Don't just let the club drop.
2) Keep different sized band-aids in the bag, or in this case... gauze and tape. We're playing with weapons, dammit!

No one in the group had any bandaids, but one had some tape. I folded up a (unused) tissue, and taped it up as best I could.

It took about 2 weeks to fully heal up and I think I should have gotten stitches, but why inflict more pain? I will tell you this, liquid bandage was the best thing for this. However, I think I suffered some other kind of damage, maybe to a tendon, because it doesn't allow my ankle to bend as much (feels a little tighter in that general area).

I think I've told this one here so if you've heard it, forgive me. If not, here goes:

My best friend and I used to go to DSG in Chattanooga during the winter months when it would get nasty and we'd rent out the simulator. I think it was like $30 for an hour or something like that and we could pick any course we wanted and play. We'd usually get 18 in plus some general 'driving range' time. My buddy Matt is 6'6 with the longest arms you've ever seen in your life (and he's lefty). He had a set of King Cobra II graphite shafted irons that he bought off Craigslist and then still played the garbage driver and 3w from his starter set, which was like InTech or some nonsense. The shaft on his driver was legitimately like a spaghetti noodle. He couldn't hit it very far at all and it sounded even worse, so he asked to demo one of the newest Taylormade drivers.

We'd made friends with the PGA Pro and the head golf sales associate, so they pretty much let us do what we wanted.....the sales guy taped up a brand new Taylormade lefty driver, I wanna say it was an R11s, but I can't be sure. Matt grabs it, takes a couple waggles, and CRACK! We all jump like someone just shot at us. In his effort to crush one with the new 45"+ driver (His Intech was like 43ish if I remember right) he swung so hard and so upright that in his follow through, he drove the head of the driver and the shaft into the ceiling of the simulator bay, snapping the shaft in half. It was a TP version, whatever it was, I do remember that, so it was a pretty decent shaft.

Everyone in that half of the store it seemed stopped what they were doing and came to find out what the loud noise was. I was almost on the floor I was laughing so hard, Matt was as red as a tomato and now holding both ends of the snapped-in-two evidence of the crime. Jody, the sales guy, was standing there jaw still on the floor, and within a few seconds we were kind of looked at eachother like 'DID THAT JUST HAPPEN???'

Matt was afraid he was going to have to pay for a broken $399 driver, but Jody, once he recovered, took it all in stride. 'Nope, we'll just turn it in for warranty purposes as a store error' which was pretty cool bc they could have charged him for it I'd think, but either way, we still laugh about it to this day. The look on Matt's face was priceless.

The absolute dumbest thing I ever did was try to beat a storm. I hurried through those last few holes. The wind was whipping up, the sky was darkening fast and the first few drops of rain were starting to roll in. After the drive on 17, I speed to the ball and lightning strikes within 60 yards of me. That one marked the LAST time I ever tested mother nature like that.

The second dumbest stunt - was a spectator at what is now called the Champion's Tour while traveling. My business associate says he is about ready to head for home to which I agree since we were both a little beat. We are on a course neither of us knew or had ever seen. We start weaving through trees and inventing all sorts of short cuts to the parking lot. Somehow the two of us emerge from a dense little forested area and find ourselves skirting a tree line back out in the open. We're thinking we are all alone and out of harm's way when we suddenly start hearing all sorts of whistles and yelling. We look back over our shoulders and realize we had somehow made it right onto the dogleg of a hole. Off in the distance is a golfer trying to go up over the trees we were walking by. He is waving for us to beat it. So we run like rabbits through the fairway in our shame. Turns out,,, that golfer in the distance was a guy named Arnold Palmer. My only brush with Arnie as it turns out -- was me annoying the crap out of him. Oh and btw -- he ended up hitting to within 8' and sunk the putt. At least us two knuckleheads made it to the car knowing our blunder hadn't ruined the hole for him.
