Ever do something so stupid that you just have to laugh?

One time back when I was in junior college on an executive course I was playing with some friends and there is a downhill par 4 that if you get into one you could be on the green. Well I swung out of my shoes trying to absolutely crush it. The ball proceeded to destroy the gold tee marker. The ball hit the tee marker and the tee marker exploded and flew up in the air. All of my friends are on the ground laughing and after a moment of embarrassment I started laughing also. Luckily it was on the 7th hole of a 9 hole course. Every time I played that hole after that I chuckle a little.

About 6-7 years ago I was playing with my foursome on a hot summer day, we all hit our second shots and as I'm marking my ball I hear an incredibly loud thunk followed by another. I turn around to see my friend lying in the bunker, he had stepped on the rake and it had knocked him out, it was like something out of a cartoon. We all thought it was an accident but later he admitted to being too lazy to bend over to pick it up so he stepped on it thinking he would catch it as it came at him. doh!!

I was laughing so hard at this, I had to take my glasses off and wipe my eyes. That's great.

Last night I got a call from my ex (not the one who looked like Corey Pavin....the other one) and she reminded me of this story.

We were both in the Navy at the time, and the stars aligned and we had leave at the same time. We visited my mom who lived in Northern Virginia and while there, an old buddy of mine came by and invited us to play golf. We headed off to Pohick Bay and she came along...but didn't wish to play.

About the 3rd hole I tee up...take a swing and toe the living daylights out of the ball. It shoots out 90 degrees from my stance line and nails the golf cart she is sitting in. She gives me the stink eye, and moves the cart so it's behind the tee box.

I tee up again...take a swing, and just crush this thing. Unfortunately the ball shot straight right, hit a ball washer and slapped the side of the golf cart she was sitting in.

10 years later, we are both in Boston and she is there with her husband. We still get along great, so I cheerfully accepted the invite to have a drink with her and her husband who I had not yet met. As I walk up to the table she introduces me as the man who tried to kill her twice on a golf course.

For some reason I had hoped that the fact we had been married a while would have been the first thing out of her mouth....

Ok so I took my first attempt at the playing ability test this past Thursday. For those that are unfamiliar with the PAT, it's two rounds from about 6000 yards with middle pins. The target score is usually 153-155 based off the course rating plus 15 shots.

Now I get there, stretch out, hit some putts then finish my warm up hitting some balls. I was swinging pretty well before we went out so I'm feeling good. We head out to our starting hole which was a par 3 over water, playing 189 yards.

I talk it over with my caddy and we go with a solid 5 iron, perfect number. So I'm in the zone, just looking at my target.

I get up there and absolutely flush this 5 iron, dead solid perfect high and straight...

TO THE WRONG HOLE!

At this course the 9th green (starting hole) and the 3rd green are right next to each other. What makes it even more funny is that I was pin high but 30 yards left of my hole. Took a double. I just have to laugh about it.

I decide to take the new Foot Joy Contours for a 'spin' this evening. I had wore them during a round of cart golf earlier in the week and they were fine, but they were not ready to walk 18 holes in soft conditions. By the 8th hole I had begun to develop a blister on my right heel. Mr. Prepared, I opened my bag and pulled out my 'med kit'. Band-Aids applied and I was off again. Three holes later the pain was unbearable and I was forced to make a decision; continue on or find the car. I chose the former option, removed my shoes and played in my socks. I trudged through 5 holes but wet, cold feet (and the thought of getting my kids sick) forced me to put my shoes back on. I slowly finished the last holes with my shoes untied. The oddity; I didn't hit the ball any better and/or worse with or without shoes (tied or untied).

What say you? Soldier on or pack it in?

Your a real trooper PD, can't believe you played barefoot lol. I once had a pair of golf shoes my Father in law gave me, they gave me blisters so bad, one day by the end of the front 9 they were so bad that I bent the backs of them over and wore them like slippers for the rest of the round. At one point I folded up a piece of scorecard and put it around my heel under my sock to stock the friction and the shoes even chewed threw two layers of scorecard lol. Needless to say I didn't wear them again lol

I wonder if I would have continued if I were skunking the ball around? I actually thought about bringing my current pair of Contours, just in case I needed to change shoes at the turn, but left them at home. Lesson learned . . . prepare for the worst case scenario. I wish I were a bit more creative Pigs. I'd never even think about the options you presented.

It was 'couples night' at the course this evening and a few of the ladies found it humorous that I was walking down the fairways without shoes. Here's the sad part, this is not my first barefoot experience. At least I kept my socks on this time.

Great thread PD... Not golf related but here it goes...

BIG custom home on a Golf Course... Multiple locations down, one upstairs.... We have to abandon ship on structured wiring cause it's RG59...

Gotta pull new...

NASTY crawl space, maze like and I'm enormous.... 6'5 nearly..... 270lbs....

Have to crawl from side to side, back to front, following Ducts to get to locations.... Takes nearly 45 minutes which is an ETERNITY in a crawl space... Try 5 minutes and then holler at me...( Plumbers, Tin Benders, Sparkies.... I know... I was a plumber... So been longer.... But muddy, wet, bug infested, lived in houses aren't like new builds... Anyways... )

So I climb out... House has light bulbs in strategic places in crawl space.... I've got 4 lines running through crawl..

Run outside, jam in a feed... Head back... Pull feed... Hook... Seal.... Done.

Finish Install.

Nothing works..... Turns out I had accidentally draped all 4 of those lines over a light bulb, left the lights on, did the 2 hours worth of exterior work with that coax sitting on a light bulb....

Yeah... FatA$$ vs CrawlSpace..... ROUND TWO!!!
Maybe they weren't the size that was listed? In florida this year (february) I went to the GS and bought those very shoes and hopped right into them, never having a problem. I always get mine a little larger and they feel like slippers.

Finished a round and went to my car. Opened the hatch, saab 9-3. Pulled the bag off the click gear to put in "trunk" spun around and took out Taillight. I looked like a pist off cop from "Porky's". I had to laugh. Looked around, not one witness.

I found a temporary solution to my current footwear concerns. I wore my new Contours this morning for 8 holes. When the blister began to hurt on my right foot, I switched that shoe for a trail runner, and finished the round with 2 different shoes.

I've done that. I had a pair of short socks that kept slipping down and caused my Ecco Streets to give me a blister, so I took them all off and walked barefoot until I got back in.

Now I carry moleskin in my golf bag just in case.

Playing in money match, one-up going into last hole, opponent sticks approach shot to about 3' from 170ish, I hit a good, not great approach from a bit closer to respond to about 12'. I have a simple uphill, right to left putt with no more than two cups of break and proceed to miss it on high side, leaving about a 6" tap-in. Disgusted that I missed my putt, I proceed to slap down on my thigh , forgetting that had a golf ball in pocket, and fracture my pinky and ring finger on that hand. My opponent tells me to pick up my next putt, and proceeds to miss his. I remove my hat, and then proceed to shake his hand and thank for match, with same hand with broken digits :)
I don't know the age of many posters in here, but, I remember back in early 70's (way back) the golf shoes were not made to be comfortable, so it seemed. I guess a could afford the soft leather ones, but the ones I used were nothing but "blister makers". Comfortable shoes, clothing, is so conducive to playing well, and uncomfortable shoes sure can mess up a round of golf.

what fun you had.

For me, time to make me laugh, cry, stay ambivalent, dbl bogey on three of my first 4 holes on the back nine till I righted the ship and played the rest of the way even. What a day!

That is odd, I have never had that as an issue with new foot joys. Write them a letter of concern, perhaps they send you a couple pair as a concession to the poor experience. By the way I have done a number of foot marches with blisters so I would Soldier on!@
