Sun Mountain Vs Clicgear

Recommended Posts

Im not really an expert as far as pushcarts go so feel free to include any info you might have.

Im getting close to purchasing the Clicgear 3.5 as there appears to be a consensus that its a great cart. That being said i use Sun Mountain bags and really trust them to make a quality product so i cant quite rule out the Sun Mountain yet. I dont really care about price so if one is $25 cheaper its not going to influence my decision one way or another.

So are Sun Mountain carts up to par with Clicgear and im just picking which brand name i like more, or is there really a difference?

I have a Sun Mountain Microcart and my brother has a Clic 3.0. We argue their merits and defects all the time.

The Clic Gear is more robust.
It's faster and tracks straighter if you release and race it downhill.
It is more stable and will tip over less if you hit a tee marker when racing it down hill.
It has a better brake.
It will tow behind an electric cart more stably and easily than the four wheel SM will tow.

The Sun Mountain takes up less space in the trunk.
It folds and unfolds in half the time the Clic Gear does.
It has NO STRAPS, which is good and bad. Good for fasting loading, bad if you hit a tee marker in a downhill race, your clubs go flying.
The Sun Mountain Micro is specifically designed to MATE with a couple of SM bags like the Synch and S-1. If you have or buy this bag, it fits schweeeet on your cart, no twisting or rattling, without strapping it down.

Both have tons of doo-dad attachments.

^^^ Great points. The Clicgear is actually smaller according to the manufaxcturer's sites (13" x 15" x 23") vs 24.5" x" 16" x 12" for the SM microcart. However the shape of the Clicgear does take more bulk in the trunk IMO.

The Cligear is much more robust but a lot heavier getting in and out. If you keep it in your trunk all the time, especially if it's an SUV, you may want to bungy it if you have somwhere to attach the hooks so it isn't banging around when you don't have clubs to hold it in place.

The drink holder in the new Clicgear model seems flimsier and small, so if you can get your hands on the prior model holder, grab a couple.

Whatever one you get try to get a spare umbrella holder in case you lose one. Keep it in a pocket of your bag or trunk, it will fall off the funky clip on the cart if you rely on it there.

We have both; my wife uses the SM 4 wheeler (older model), I use the Clicgear. My third, starting with the 2.0, then 3.0 now 3.5. THere ae many attachment hooks n the CG. I use two thermoses in the holders on hot days, and a CG Rangefinder bag.

We keep the Clicgear SM side by side in our SUV, not quite flush against the back wall. Still enough room for them and to stack two sets of club at the front. The carts stay in the vehicle all the time (unless they get displaced by luggage on a road trip).

I've been using the same SM Speedcart for over 10 years now...the old ones with pneumatic tires, tiny storage bin, bungee cables and caliper brakes. Just routine service over that time period, pump air into the tires a couple times a year, replacing brake cables and replaced 2 tubes due to flats. It's been good to me and still runs like a watch and superb customer service from Sun Mountain. Called to buy some inner tubes - they sent me 3 free. Called to buy brake cables, gave that to me free too. New models have redesigned brakes and no more pneumatic tires.

If I were to buy a new 3 wheeled push cart today, I would buy a Clicgear. More accessory choices, better storage bin, smaller footprint when folded up. I think balance/center of gravity is better too - I've had a few times where the Speedcart would tip over backwards when loaded with an umbrella. But the Speedcart still runs well so I can't justify a new 3 wheeler as nice as the 3.5+'s are.

I would buy a 4 wheeled push cart though - the differences are great enough for me that I would make the switch. Stability, packing and unpacking ease, the bag is strapped a little bit more upright (makes clubs easier to put in and pull out). I had my eye on a Bagboy Quad+, but lately I've been hearing of disappointing customer service issues. Clicgear has a new quad pushcart - Model 8 that I really like. Only issue is that the 3.5+ fits a bigger range of bags (cart & stand) better than the Model 8, so not an issue if I use a cart bag, but I may need to mod it a little to make a stand bag fit snuggly without twisting and turning.
