Right shoulder down bad move
It takes time, courage and lots of repetition to ingrain the move. But once you have done it a few times correct you will realize that it really works for you as well. That will motivate a lot and keep you going... ;)
I have read this a few times now GN.What exactly do you mean by courage?

It was a response to you, because once you said that you are afraid about something.
To do a change you need to have courage. Thats all it means.
Some people are afraid they lose their swing, if they change something.
They don't have the courage to try.
This seems to be the key when trying to make a swing change: overcoming the fear that the swing you do not like but somehow produces a somewhat acceptable score disappears and is replaced with something even worse! You need guts!

In my search to get rid of the OTT move, I noticed that many people, including well known instructors, were saying: "the right shoulder should move down in the downswing not around". I have been relying on this advice for many years resulting in big pushes and hooks. Only recently, I figured out that the right shoulder should actually stay higher and move around and out to the ball in the downswing. My ball striking has improved dramatically as a result.

Anybody else suffered from this "standard OTT advice"?
Just a suggestion:

From your top of your swing, your arms and chest will form a unit - but instead of trying to swing with your arms and hands - just hold them in place - then just focus on pushing your right pectoral down through the ball as hard as you can. Obviously hold your spine in place. But your arms will extend naturally. You will almost feel like you're hitting the ball with your right side initially.

Think about that and watch the Michelle Wie (or any pro) video.

Push the right pec. No more OTT, hello "inside strike". :)

Wanted to resurrect this because it's something that I think is so important and the one of the feels Monte gave me to shallow the shaft that clicked. For someone that used to be almost vertical at impact it is quite a revelation to try this, have it feel impossibly odd and then look on video and see yourself look better than they've ever looked.

I was watching Golf Channel a few months ago and Henrik Stenson was on explaining the way he swings a golf club. He said he uses his right shoulder.

Hi golfbeat.

Are you still moving the right shoulder out intead of down. I was curious is still working for you to eliminate hooks and pushes.

Absolutely. After Monte's clinic I am now also committed to hitting slight fades and standing closer to the ball. Makes it even easier to get the right shoulder out and around and not down and dumped under.

I was working hard on getting my right shoulder under and through and found I was hooking quite a few shots, w/ some pushes.

Now I still work my shoulder under, but there is a little outward move as well.

This additional outward motion just seems to get me moving on the proper swing path.

I am realizing the smallest changes can make a huge impact on your swing.

I used to do the right shoulder down thinking it was part of a swing key, but I was really applying it wrong. I turned my shoulders so quickly that at impact they were already too far rotated in relation to my arms. So my arms were always left behind. I actually thought that was getting into the slot. Nope. Right shoulder down for me now only happens through impact after P6 when I'm squatting a little and then powering through the ball bottom up. Always feel like there is more fine tuning for a more efficient swing but compared to what I did before it already is much more effortless (efficient).

BTW the Azahara Munoz swing looks really hard to execute! Seems like she really slings the club through impact, really uses the whole body well. Picture perfect finish too! Seems to me a very flat swing arc but could be due to driver length. Interesting to see a face on version to see where her arms and shoulders are at impact.

You have to stop here and remember it's a feel. Those who are OTT spin out their shoulders typically.

The feel of it moving more down is the correct instruction.

Spinning out the shoulders is not the issue. To spin out with a steep shaft is.

You show me a video of someone spinning their shoulders out like a typical slicer who can drop their hands on plane lol

OTT is not cured by stopping to spin or rotate the shoulders. It is cured by learning how the arms work correctly. Over the top just means that the shaft comes over the top of the plane and needs to therefore be shallowed out. PGA players spin their shoulders like crazy.

Don't really want to debate. But look at your PGA players and you'll see they're not "spin their shoulders like crazy" by any stretch of the imagination. The fact is the shoulder moves under, through and around. Not out over the ball, wide open and around.

What exactly is the difference between these two sentences?

seems pointless to discuss a 3d shoulder movement with 2d drawings. down, out, around. what each person needs to feel will depend.

Getting the right shoulder under I think fixes early extension and possibly even flipping so I think it provides some great benefits.

I've noticed fat/thin shots "greatly" reduced.

Unfortunately its not a magic bullet.

I think my right arm was being sucked to the inside as my right shoulder was working under and it was causing hooks.

I had to finally feel like my right arm was moving "away" from body as my right shoulder was working "under" to stop hooking.

So if it makes any sense, my right shoulder works under and then around, while my right arm is tracing the target line instead of being sucked inside.

All this to avoid the hook. It seems to work, but it might be a bandaid.

Don't know what you mean by under. The shoulder from the top is moving down and out until about when the shoulders get back to square then it moves down and around. Allows the right arm to stay bent and requires side bend to hit ball. Too much down and not enough out can lead to ee and losing angles early with a flip to hit the ball as the arm straightens.

Nice example here which is better than words.
