Need help with swing. video included.

Hello,

Former baseball player, 2nd year playing golf. Right as I was on the verge of breaking 80, I started playing baseball again and my golf swing has suffered. I can clearly see, I am coming across the ball, almost like I am trying to pull an inside pitch in baseball. Has resulted in mostly slices lately. What should I be thinking about/what drills can help me get back on track. thanks

Hips firing WAY too early.

There are a number of ways to fix this issue, but it takes time.

More lateral hip movement
Starting arms first
Pointing belt buckle behind ball longer

Etc.

You will get more ideas on this concept as the thread progresses, but this is your number one priority.

Improved transition sequence.

You're swinging at that ball like it insulted your mum.

Is this your real swing? You're clearly a very athletic guy, but I'm not sure trying to smash it into next week is going to pay dividends like it does in baseball.

Here's an interesting video for purposes of smoothing out the transition like Monte suggested - specifically between 0:30 - 0:45 seconds. See how there is a slight lateral shift of the hips towards the target at the top and how the club 'settles' as I like to think of it (i.e. it drops slightly). This very much sets up the downswing and allows the arms to reconnect, as opposed to snatching at the ball from the top. I'm not saying it has to be done exactly like this, but I think this move could help a lot.

In baseball terms. Ball is an outside fastball. Hit it to right field meaning swing that way on the downswing.

As athletic as you are you will probably figure the rest out.

Brian,

Got to hand it to you man.... looked at a lot of swings for a long time. You win the prize for fearless knocking the absolute dog snot out of it. The first thing your swing tells me is how freak'n old I'm getting. Drugs not yet invented couldn't get me close.

Question -- Are you seriously interested in getting the golf swing dialed down a little? Its all good either way dude! There's a theory that says once you get it all sequenced well -- then its ok to swing as hard as you want.

But its probably going to require a little bit of (I take that back - a LOT of) throttling back for a while -- spending time with half-swings -- getting the little things tuned up.

While we await your answer.... I believe I'm going to start looking into old-folks-homes before its too late - LOL. (Its a compliment for you - a dilemma for me!)

Being a baseball player and having worked with monte at a clinic, i can say my hips fire early too.

i like having my transition trigger be "right shoulder out towards the ball."

overall, you look to be athletic, and a lot of things from baseball will help you, but the hips firing early is something that can kill a golf swing.

While there are a few things that need attention, the one thing you could do is let your right elbow be faster than your hands and hips. This would require not only a faster right elbow but slower hips. Try to feel your right elbow getting in front of you while your weight is still on your back foot.

More right shoulder out towards ball would be a disaster for him. His needs more down and less out.

Check your grip, especially R hand then go out and get the heaviest galvanized fence post, or something similar, you can find and swing that.

It's not uncommon for ballplayers, as golfers, to over acclerate everything because they can't feel the weight of the club and also can't, as in baseball, use the baseball's own inertia for leverage-propulsion, so they jump on the speed pedal. The speed pedal is fine, as long as the weight, or in your case the club, is not sent away from you. Once the weight gets away from you, even an ounce, you can never get it back.

So swing something ridiculously heavy and sense what happens as you manage the weight which manages you, and you will instinctively recognize the folly of throwing the weight to the outside and away from you as you do. This is a good place to start.

Good luck.

For me, the right shoulder out is more a first move rather than having my hips fire first as it would in my baseball swing. I'm not sure if it would help him with his transition but it helps me.

He needs more time on his back foot to lead with the right elbow which will lower the right shoulder. Right shoulder out in trans would make him swing even more left.

You are completely wasting your time thinking about your transition/downswing before you fix your setup/ backswing
At setup you need more knee bend with your butt sticking out more out with your hands closer to your torso.Notice the disatnce of your hands from your thighs at setup and compare it to Adam Scott's below.
Going back you lack sufficient hip turn and disconnect your left arm from your torso.Together these issues result in poor angles at the top , which in turn lead to a lack of lateral movement in transition and a spin around your right leg going down.Just look at how you lift your right heel early and the amount that your right knee breaks in toward the ball early in your downswing
The bottom line ,you are in NO position to make the correct transition with your current backswing position
Please post a front video and a close up of your left hand and then both hands on the grip.

Most times I would agree with the premise that you fix setup and backswing first. However, there are always exceptions. If he makes those changes you suggest first, he won't be able to hit the ball. Occasionally, you have to work backwards and this is one of those times.

He gets plenty of hip turn in the backswing. He just fires them way before the backswing is done so it appears the turn is light.

Wow! Just curious, how many fairways over to the right did that end up? ;)
[/quote]
I would be interested also. I don't mean to be rude, but that is a slice I'd pay to see protraced.

Thanks for the help guys. I knew I was cutting across the ball by just looking at the video, but now I can see how the hips are opening early and causing it. I especially like the Justin Rose video. I will get to work on fixing it and post another video soon.

As far as how bad did that ball slice, I would say it started about 10 yards left of the fairway and ended up 20 yards right of the fairway. But no worries thanks to your guys help, it should be straightened out in no time.

Swing harder. Hit ball far :)

From one former cleanup hitter to what appears to be another....heavy shafts, slower backswing and smooth downswing. Can't hit it at the top....wanna be fastest at the bottom. All lessons I learned when I started a few years ago.

If push comes to shove....watch tin cup. That kinda hip speed....you could run some serious games if you played with a bag of baseball bats and shovels.
