Eligibility Effect of Advance HS Programs

I didn't want to jack another similar eligibility thread - so let me start this one. My son in a Freshman - He is in a program where, essentially, after 4 years he will graduate from High School & receive a 2 year Associates Degree in Humanities as well. Basically, although the classes all take place at a Community College Facility - he will only be "officially enrolled" in College for the last 2 years of High School. The College Classes count for both HS and College Credit. So.......... does that mean that when he goes on to finish his Bachelors and possibly Masters - he has lost 2 years eligibility?

 

I think it should also bring up a question of HS Eligibility - while enrolled in College.

 

Either way - I think the brains outweigh the swing and he loves it. So we'd stay the course.

 

Just curious if anyone else has been thru this type of program and knows how the eligibility works.

Could be wrong ... but I don't think he loses any eligibility unless he plays sport. He could graduate HS, go to a community college for 2 years AND not play for the community college, and still have 4 years of eligibility left.

From what I understand he has to play a sport. That's why kids get red shirted their freshman year or take a medical red shirt in a different year and then go on to a 'masters program' after they graduate so they can play another year of sports.

I did not play college golf so, technically, if I wanted to go back to school and try out for the golf team I could.

That is not correct. In 95% of cases, in most sports, you only have five years to complete four seasons from when you begin college (religious missions, military service, etc being in that 5%). That's why you will occasionally see players petition for a sixth year of eligibility due to injuries, and also why losing a year to transferring is a big deal. The day you step on campus, as an athlete or not, your clock starts. This is assuming you are talking about Division 1. I'm rusty on my rules, so I don't recall exactly why sometimes washed up baseball players can come back an play quarterback.

Bk4 is on the right track. FB player at my alma mater went to a jr college and didn't play a sport and that started his 5 year clock.

Now wether being a HS student enrolled in an Early College HS ( what we call them in my state) counts as college clock starting is an interesting question that I have not seen addressed.
