Shaft Length - Effect on Swing Speed?

Piesman

Recommended Posts

I have an old Titleist 913D2 driver that is 45 inches and I was just curious if I did cut it down to 44" what would I need to do to establish the same swingweight I had before when it was 45 inches long? Would I need to add lead tape to head and if so how much in order to get it back to same swingweight......if anyone knows this thanks for letting me know because I am going to keep my 45" 913D2 and buy another one and make it 44" and just try the two side by side but need to know about getting weight correct on shorter one.

Something around 10 grams will get you where you want. You'll also have the effect of softening the shaft about 1/3 to 1/2 flex, depending on how far apart the flexes are for that exact shaft.

You may also not notice the difference. :)

I'm a little late to this game, but I actually have an X-Stiff shaft, which is too stiff, and since I'm taller with long FTW length, the driver length suggested to me (not technically fit) was 45.75". I want to cut it down by at least an inch...more like 1.5". How much flex will that knock off? I have a Project X HZRDUS Black 6.5. I'm seriously lacking consistency.

1 cpm for each SWP you add back after going shorter. If you cut 1.5 inch and reset SW, Thats 9 SWP or about 1 flex class softer

Howard...thanks for the response. You are saying that I have to add SW to the head to compensate for change in length and shaft weight removal? Or, are you saying that is what gets added back to the club after cutting it? If the former, I'm assuming 9 SWP would be 27g needing added? Not sure how I'd do that without removing the shaft from the adapter and then adding weight to it (except lead tape to the head). Right now, I can add 10g of weight by changing out my Draw and CG weights in the clubhead.

Cutting 1.5 inch shorter makes a drop in SW value of 9 SWP.

If you reset the original SW value, 1 SWP at 44.25" is 1.64 grams for each SWP x 9 =14.76 grams added to the head.

If you do that, flex drops about 9 CPM or about one flex, so 6.5 become in the area of 5.6-5.5

Actually, wouldn't 5.5 (in Project X terms) be a Regular Flex, so that would be 2 flex levels...6.0 being Stiff and 6.5 being X-Stiff? I'm trying to get the shaft to be 44.25" and close to 6.0 (Stiff for Project X)...after cutting the shaft down, what would I need to do to achieve that?

We count 10 CPM as 1 flex class, PX and Rifle labels is 1/2 flex classes for each label, and 5.5 aint R flex, its S, and 6.0 is S+, but there is no common standard for flex labels either, so compare PX to PX and "other to others" when we deal with stuff like this.

To reduce 5 CPM it takes 5 SWP, or a tip section thats 1.25" longer, but we dont have that option, but this shafts aint made as "multi flex", so we can get the butt CPM equal, but that does not mean the shaft will play identical to its softer brother model, that dont even happens for RIFLE FCM who is the same profile for all, only progressive stiffer or softer "all the way".

Instead of solving this on the paper, what you should do is to set a mark on the grip like you already cut it 1.5 shorter, then add weight to the head until feel of head weight is good and impact the same. Now ask yourself "how does flex feels"? There want be much you can do about it if you want it softer, in extreme cases we might SHIM the tip up 0.25" but that want make a large change to feel either, its equal to 1 CPM softer....

Tom,

Sorry but unfortunately Tom hasn't been active on the site for a while now.

But pretty sure his answer would be along the lines of:

Not necessarily.   It's the general athletic ability and swing characteristics that play a much bigger role in how long a driver (or club in general) any individual can handle effectively.   Size tends to be the bigger influence on how short a club one can manage so is more about the short end of the set.  And even that's a combination of height and arm length - not just height.
