I just noticed OP, that your from MN too! What course did you get your new PB at??
It was actually at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan. The course can be a bit challenging but I like that it forces you to use every shot in the bag and hit multiple different clubs off the tee
Good for you man! I like playing the courses around here that are that way too. There's a couple pretty wide open ones that are fine to play at, especially since they make you feel good about your score, but it's much more rewarding to accomplish a good score on a difficult course like that!

It's a bummer the golf season is over for us! 5-6 months of no play is tough to deal with!

It is very frustrating to have to putt so much.....
You could have stopped there and everyone would still understand!

Great job. And don't forget about course management to save a few strokes. Since you're hitting the ball better, save whatever you strokes you can by minimizing the mistakes. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the tip, really the biggest thing I have learned this season is bogey is a good score. I left my friends puzzled sometimes with some of the lay ups I have done. For example, I tried a tip I saw from Tom Watson on long par 3s: if facing a long par 3 that's pretty tough I take out a long-mid iron and hit a little punch lay up to around 30 to 60 yards and try to land it on the small amount of fairway running up to the green on most long par 3's and try to get up and down.

I have found this strategy usually gives me at least a par putt but most of the time has me leave with bogey and eliminates the double bogey that can come from hitting a shank or some of the wildness that can come from hitting a hybrid or long iron on a long par 3 since the ball can be In the air so long.

My short game is something I feel is pretty strong and I love using all my wedges pw-lw in the pitching game depending on the shot, height, and distance.

Yeah that's what I think makes it tough to lower your scores up here. No matter how well you finish the season, you have a 5month+ break which stalls your progress. It is nice to have a little extra cash in the pocket book but hitting off mats all winter usually leads to some thin shots starting off the year, and it's just not the same as actually playing.

Last weekend was decent with temps in the 40s and 50s and this Monday we have snow and highs of 30 degrees!

You got it. Think of it this way - on a typical par 72 course, NO double bogeys and ONE par gets you 89. Right idea.

Thanks Richard,

Yeah I know some of us higher handicaps seem few and far between but, I didn't know 2 "vasts" deep in the minority :blush2::cheesy: .

I figure public internet admission is the first step in lowering the ole handicap haha

Congratulations on breaking 90 for the first time! Well done. And, with an eagle on top of it, what could be better? This year, I broke 80 for the first time and, for the second time. It is such a kick and so satisfying to feel that you are finally beginning to put together a good round of golf. You should feel deservedly proud of your accomplishment. Good luck next season. Here's to lots of future rounds in the eighties!

I finally broke 90 for the first time this weekend in front of my buddies, shot 89. I am typically a mid 90s shooter with a few 100s sprinkled in there.

I have worked really hard this year: I got lessons all off season, I did a complete bag overhaul and got fitted for every club in the bag, and I really took my short game seriously. I got away from the prov 1's and started using pinnacle golds, which have really helped me learn how to control the ball around the green.

I shot a few rounds of 90 this year where it came down to just having to make par on the last hole and in all 3 cases I missed the putt from about 9-16 feet, 2 lipped out :swoon: .

Sunday we played in extremely windy conditions and I told myself all day just to swing as easy as I can and try to relax, and it worked! shot 47 on the front and on the 10th hole par 5 I made my first eagle!!!. I bogeyed all the way to the 16th hole. I hit a tee shot ob for double on the 16th and put one in a pond on the 17th for another double.

On 18 (par5) I sliced the ball way right but managed to get the ball to about 12 feet. I thought all I had to do was 2 putt for bogey to shoot 89 but my buddies reminded me I was at 37 and needed to make par (great here we go again...). Well my 2 buddies putted and i took note of their breaks then i put a good roll on it and it dropped in! If you had been watching, you would have thought I just won the masters! It was such a fitting round to do it because most of the courses in MN are closing before the weekend so it was a great way to end the season on such a positive note.

Breaking 90 really has me motivated to work hard in the off-season and see if i can make it a consistent habit. Looking forward to the annual march golf trip and hopping to start the season of strong next year!
that's awesome.

i remember the first time i broke 90. it was in high school, and like you, it was by one stroke. it was in district play at a pete dye course and i would take that same score today there in a heartbeat.

Congrats on breaking 90! I joined a local CC last year, and that has been my goal since joining - I'm inching closer, but not quite there yet. I struggle with too much inconsistency - I'll shoot a 41 on the front, and blow up on the back with a 53. Or, even more frustrating, shoot a 53 on the front, and follow up with a 41 on the back!

I had the same realization this year as you about scoring a Bogey - it is good! The "tip" that has helped me this year, is it is OK to punch out/lay up from a bad shot. Don't compound a bad shot with another bad shot. In the past, if I hit an errant tee shot that wound up in a patch of trees, and there was a 2 inch wide path to the green or a safe punch out to the fairway, I'd always take the high-risk (low-probability) shot instead of the safe, smart shot, and I'd usually end up hitting about 3 of those trees, wind up 50 yards back, and behind a group of more trees. Now, I just play for the shot that gives me the best chance to recover and minimize my strokes for that hole. And, it only took me 15 years of playing to learn that!

Congrats! I know how good you're feeling, I just did the same thing last week.

I had an 89 a few years ago on a very short, very easy course (<6000 yds), so I'm considering this my first legit sub-90. Course was a 6500 yard, fairly challenging par 71 course.

I had 9 pars, 4 bogeys, 4 doubles, one quad. 42 on the front, 45 on the back for an 87. Had one awfully shanked tee shot, then hit 4 consecutive trees trying to get back to the correct fairway, resulting in the 8. Also played the four par 3's +6 so the round could've easily been a few shots better.

The biggest positive was that I had zero penalty strokes for the round, which may be my first time ever.

I have started looking at my punch outs as "new drives". So say I hit my tee shot into some woods and I punch out into the fairway but now I am 50 yards closer. I look at this 3rd shot like my second and try to play for "par" which is in this case bogey. So if on my next shot I miss the green, I still feel like I can get up and down and save bogey. Even if I get a double i have eliminated the big number which is a triple or higher by not taking a high risk shot and mentally made myself feel like a bad drive doesnt throw away the hole completely.

The stats say that 98% of every golfer that tees it up would not break 100 playing it down and out.

That's why breaking 90, and I am giving you credit for playin it down and out for that score, is a great accomplishment!!

Excellent job My Friend :)

Very Well Played!!

Have a nice weekend!

Congrats Flip4000!! It was 2 years ago that I first broke 90 playing it down. Like you, I practice quite a bit but it doesn't come as easily for me as some others. Still a great accomplishment. I've yet to break 80 but have been close on a few occasions.

I'm happy for all the golfers out there who are able to improve their game and reach new milestones.
