Taylormade R15 vs Ping G30 vs Titleist 915

I went in to a local GG earlier this evening and was intending to purchase a G30 if it could replace my R1. I started out with a 9 degree with the tour 65 shaft. This setup felt awesome in my hands, the tour shaft is 45.25, I like shorter shafts and i have always gotten better results with a 45 or 45.25 shaft. So i hit several balls and was hitting them straight or a little fade avg about 270. I then tried the 915 with both the blue and white diamana, and was hitting these combos just about identical to the ping. I was talking to the rep about how both were getting the same results. I was even launching the diamana white in the 13-14 range. I asked him when the R15 was coming out and he said they had one in the back. I asked if he could show it to me and he said yes. He started to inspect it and it was a demo and someone had already hit it. He said they weren't suppose to. I asked him if i could hit it and he let me. Both weights were in the middle and it was a 10. 5 head. After 4 or 5 hits, sorry to report this was the shortest of the three by at least 15 yards, i was expecting the R15 to be a beast but i was highly disappointed. I did not purchase anything because i know my R1 is just as long or longer the three I was trying. I know very un ho like.I want name the store to protect the innocent, but the salesman was one of the best i have ever had the pleasure of working with, no pressure just trying to help me and told me to bring in my R1 and we would try again.

How did the spin compare?

The Ping and both titleist results were so similar i could not believe it. GG has two different launch monitors and i was on the cheap on. After hitting theR15 and seeing how short it was, i did not even care about the spin.

R15 won't compete with Titleist or Ping unless you get an upgraded shaft.

And maybe if you had the same shaft in the R15 the results would've been more similar. If you had a noodle stock shaft in the R15 that's what I would expect. The Ping Tour shaft and the Titleist shafts are excellent. What shaft was in the R15?

it was the stock stiff shaft. i have the stock aldila phenom in my R1 and i get great results. The Titleist shafts were both standard options and the Ping was the tour 65, which is a $25 upcharge. I wish i could have hit the R15 with a different shaft but I dont think it could have made that much difference.

We're being told that shafts make such a tiny difference as to make no difference anyhow, so not sure if it was the shaft alone?

I went from the R1 to the G30 just after the G30 release. While the distance between the clubs was comparable on a flush hit, the difference on a mishit is astounding. The G30 is so much better on a mishit, at least in my experience. My FIR has never been better since switching.

I think the R15 will be targeted for players who suffer from too much spin. The other TM driver may fit those without spin issues a little better. Not 100% though..?

I wonder how the launch figures compared, you may have actually not have been getting enough spin with the R15. The reviews that are coming in at this point from most sources are impressive, so I would not one session with a stock shaft seal it's fate, that is unless you did not like the feel or the sound?

I hope to try the R15 soon, but I have played a lot with trackman and PGA simulator with G30 and 915, they are boot nice drivers! I found the 915 to be a little longer on not in center hits!
I wanna try the R15 with a Kal'il shaft before I buy something. I think that all these new drivers will give the same numbers with same shaft and a perfect hit?

[/quote]I believe you may be right here, i may not have gotten the spin numbers to launch this thing up in the air, now that i think about it.

Say what you'd like, but I've hit the latest and greatest technology and my 8 year old Rapture OG is still killin it. Complete helps dial in the focus too because off center hits suffer some.

I stopped paying attention to Taylormade after the past few irons and driver releases. They might claim it works, but have really released an astounding amount of products lately.

The shaft doesn't add anything to club head speed or ball speed, but - if the shaft helps you put the sweet spot on the ball consistently, it makes a BIG difference.

Many pros will pull their favorite shaft from one head and put it in a new one, because they know that that particular shaft works for them.

I remember trying a SLDR last year after hitting my own club on a launch monitor. It was a disaster - and I did loft up. It just didn't work for me.

After all these years, it only takes me three swings to know whether a driver combo will work. If a new one is close, it might be worth fiddling with the hosel, or trying a different shaft. but, I can't afford to spend time with something that doesn't work right off the bat.

Hold on until the Cobra Fly Z line is released .
They're already out over here and the results with both the Fly Z & the Fly Z+ are pretty good !
Cobras woods and hybrids have been very solid over the last few years .
I am gaming a Fly Z as it beat my old Bio Cell out of the bag .
However , I did end up purchasing in early December a Titleist 915 D3 9.5 with the Aldila Rogue Silver Stiff and it's also a great stick .
