Just read the article and I felt this way before but I cant believe the apparent total lack of remorse and self awareness Lance Armstrong has and cant believe GD would feature him and glorify him. Here are a couple of the low lights;

"You've got to find a way to follow the bogey with a birdie. In cycling I knew what I had to do to get that minute back."

"Pine Valley this month, Augusta next month. How am I doing?" Just seems like a giant FU to everyone who is infuriated with his cheating lying, and decieving everyone. Kind of like a I dont care. Like the twitter photo he posted of himself with all his tour de france trophies after he admitted his cheating.

He talks about how he plays 250 times a year. If he ever cheated in golf he would be heartbroken forever. How he likes to trash talk someone after a bad shot. How he wants to play in the AT&T at Pebble. How he loves to adhere to an honor code in golf which cycling doesnt have. Thats why his cheating was ok. He says everyone cheated in cycling Even though several teammates, doctors, wives have come out and stated they were threatened, fired, and had their reputations and lives ruined by Armstrong for not going along with his doping.

The whole article was so hypocritical. Ok great hes living the high life now and he wants all of us to know it, but hes a despicable loathsome individual who has had possibly the farthest fall from grace of any athlete ever and has left a path of broken lives behind him.

This and the Dan Jenkins piece last month have not been GD most shining moments. My subscription automatically renewed for 10 bucks for the year. Otherwise I am having trouble finding reasons to seek out a membership to this magazine.

Really GD? A feature story on Lance CheatStrong? On Golf's "code of honor". What planet are you on?

See ya !!!

Lance is worthy of utter contempt and disdain not because he used PED's. That alone might be forgivable. He literally tore lives and families apart. Bankrupting people with lawsuits and accusations he KNEW were rooted in the fictional narrative that was his whole life. He's an egomaniacal narcissist who lived and perpetrated a lie for the better part of two decades. Where he did anything he had to do to dispense the consequences of his actions on anybody he identified as a threat to expose him for the lying fraud that he was, is and will always be.

Before the "everyone deserves a second chance!" chorus begins to even warm up. Understand that Lance was confronted on a daily basis with the choices he made about the lies and deception he perpetrated on "friends", foes and a willingly duped and fawning public. He's used multiple "second chances" to steer critical eyes away, and to himself look anywhere but in the mirror.

F you Lance.

I can't stand it when they put someone that has nothing to do with golf on the cover. Then Lydia Ko breaks almost every record for a rookie on the LPGA tour and I don't think they even mentioned it. I'm sure they are planning a Kardashian cover though.

To defend my comments earlier I've personally known 2 people who used lance as "their strength " to beat cancer and they did . My image may be a little differnt the your images of him , but cheating like this is rampant in sports and it's not just lance . Be around sports and people trying to get to the next level and you will see it. It's not like he was the only person to ever cheat he was just bad about how he went about it later
[/quote]

I agree.
While I do not like the fact he was a bully to those that trusted him I think it is wrong to take all his titles away from him when others still have them.
I love cycling and Lance was my hero and I still love replays of his wins.

eventually there's really no point to having rules if people break them and then everyone defends them for breaking them. Like "everyone breaks them"..."everyone deserves a second chance" ..."everyone loves a redemption story" etc etc

Lance sounded like a total d-bag narcissist who if you met in real life you would probably hate. I just finished watching the 30/30 on John Spano , a guy who committed fraud and stole from multiple businesses, and was sent to jail twice, and also took 1M from friggin Mario Lemieux under false business pretenses....and i mean he's on the show saying "you know i just wanted to go for it, i wanted to take that chance that other people wouldn't". And i mean, Kevin Connolly is sitting there smiling and nodding like an idiot like this guy is some kind of hero

People who intentionally hurt others shouldn't be celebrated IMO....it happens too much, so much in fact that we expect it to happen and tolerate it like it's nothing.

I love football (soccer) but they cheat every game and almost nothing is done about it! Ex. pro's on TV in the studio claim a certain player was entitled to go down to ' win ' a penalty!!! Or that they were being clever. They are cheating and should be pulled up for it.

I don't think this is much different to someone taking drugs to win in other sports as games can be won by these cheats.

I don't know the answer and I don't think giving past cheats like Lance more front pages really helps either but I do still think he did a lot of good and I still admire him as a cyclist.

I saw that tagline about the Armstrong piece and couldn't believe it :-s

How anyone can use the term 'mistake' to describe what Armstrong did needs a dictionary. For him the mistake was getting caught.
As has rightly been pointed out, he is a sociopath who committed fraud at an incredible level and rate. Hubris is too gentle a term to describe that article.

I used to just recycle these GDs I keep getting, think its time to start mailing them back.

When a football player "cheats" to win a penalty does he threaten the career of the ref that didn't give it to him? That's what Lance would have done.

After seeing the GD article on Lance Armstrong, I wrote the first letter to the editors to ask if next month they would interview another icon of sports and honor: O.J. Simpson.
I also thanked them for pandering to the masses with their lowbrow farticle on club throwing.

Quit trying to confuse the issue. Yes, lots of other guys doped. No, the other guys did not threaten anyone around them if they dared not go along with his plan. Nor did anyone else cash in on cancer and get rich off of a sham charity.

I'll go along with saying there were several vilains in cycling. But Armstong's actions would better be described as him being the devil.

What he did is leaps and bounds beyond what anyone else did.

I haven't paid for a Golf Digest or Golf Magazine subscription in years. The only reason I keep getting them is because they're given to me free with some other golf-related purchase I made.

I don't see how any magazine or newspaper (in paper format) will be around in another 10 years with so much content available online. Go digital, or die.

There are two guys I can't stand because of their cheating, lying and throwing innocent people under the bus. Ryan Braun and Lance Armstrong. I called for Braun to be traded due to his actions. Armstrong is worse as he actually threatened those who were going to tell on him.

Both are pathetic excuses for human beings.

Personally, the 1 thing that gets lost in this Lance debacles.......

Greg LeMond HE is what all the articles should contain.

I don't have too much of an opinion on Lance, did he wrong ALOT of lives and so on.... Of course, but probably 95% of all CEO/politicians have done the same.

It's the 5% that deserve the attention.... Like Greg LeMond and Jon Cena

I just don't get the "other guys have done bad stuff" angle. That doesn't mean it's not a big deal IMO. You are right, there are likely a lot of top executives who have psychopathic tendencies, this was a big part of the book "the psychopath test" by Jon Ronson (a good read)...

But those guys shouldn't be in Golf Digest either

There's very little accountability in white collar stuff, or as is the subject of this thread, sports. A couple of guys in hockey have literally attacked people on the ice causing severe bodily harm , but it gets brushed aside as "part of the game" and when they apologize even though it's completely forced and fake, we all say "everyone deserves a second chance!"....Jordan Belfort does horrible things to people, and he gets his book turned into a movie, which gets publicity for his public speaking business, and he has not even attempted to pay back the money he was court ordered to pay....no one cares because he's cool for driving helicopters drunk

Lance doesn't deserve to be in magazines telling his story. Riding a bike fast is not an excuse for being the sorry excuse for a person that he is

Plus swing advice from OJ: "How to Slice and Get Away With It".

And science breakthroughs revealed by Paulina Gretzky: "Revealed! Pregnancy Linked to Sex!", where she exclaims "I didn't know they were linked, because it never happened with the other 2000 guys I've slept with"

Maybe an all-Kardashian issue, featuring every one of that uber-talented family.

But what they really need to do is have Jenkins write another one of his "funny" parody pieces skewering Kim Jong-un. Maybe then the North Korean hackers would shut down Golf Digest, sparing us all from their slide into irrelevance.

I actually got a couple responses from GD editor. Basically he said he appreciates hearing alternative viewpoints. He also said he'd spent 4 hours answering email about the LA article. He also said Lance had helped a lot of people, but I didn't want to go into "what were they charged with?"
