There are two guys I can't stand because of their cheating, lying and throwing innocent people under the bus. Ryan Braun and Lance Armstrong. I called for Braun to be traded due to his actions. Armstrong is worse as he actually threatened those who were going to tell on him.

Both are pathetic excuses for human beings.

 Really? Sounds as though you think one mistake or felony is the same as misdemeanor or... Getting stupid drunk, driving home and getting into an accident, or not looking as you backup and then hit someone or something and drive off, or stealing from some business because you forgot your wallet. How about 'stiffing' a stripper on a lap dance, sound about right? Yep, those are the same as forgetting to pickup your buddy's order.

Everyone makes mistakes... including me. However, NOT ONE of my mistakes harmed anyone, nor have I ever cheated to win, stole something, or threaten anyone's livelihood to improve my position.
Serious question - is there a dirtier sport than cycling? It's as filthy as sewer water. All of them. I don't know how anyone can watch it.
I agree, I'm pretty sure what lance was doing to enhance his performance was pretty much the norm in cycling.

From what I've heard from others that have met Lance prior to him becoming famous, he's not very likable.

I stick to watching hockey. The NHL at least doesn't have as widespread an issue with roids, and has survived Gary Bettmans numerous attempts to kill the league.

So I wrote an email to the author of the article on Armstrong because I........believed him. So you can imagine my feelings for him. Well, he responded. Here is what he said:

’m not a fan of Lance Armstrong, and don’t get why people still ride a bike after they get their driver’s license, but as a golfer, I appreciate someone like him who drives six hours round-trip on a winter day (a holiday no less) to search for an open golf course to play.
These passages, to me at least, are worth reading: The one about his take on older men dressing up like Rickie Fowler; another about how uptight British fans are about calling it the Open Championship, and that he goes to sleep every night wondering if tomorrow will be the day he breaks 80!
I realize I’m in the minority, but I care much more about the information someone gives, than who they are. For example, an interesting tip by a PGA Tour playing struggling to keep his card beats bland advice by five-time major winner.
All in all, I’d say Lance helped more people than he hurt. And that the sport of cycling is what’s really messed up.
Jeff

Just a general (somewhat related) factoid.

Around 1991(?) Greg Lemond (three time American Tour de France winner up to that point) backed out of the TdF only a month or two before the start of that year's TdF. The stated reason was 'fatigue'. It is often believed that Lemond observed the level of assistance that EPO was giving (most typically) European riders and decided that he could not compete with that.

EPO doping was pretty new at that point, Lance was just getting started in cycling and not any kind of a factor on the cycling scene. And maybe Lemond was simply unprepared - hard to know. But my reading of all this stuff was that Lemond's outrage at what is/was going on in cycling was honest. And that point was roughly the end of his cycling career, although (IIRC) there were other issues at play here.

This is a classic example of why the golf industry is struggling. it seems like so many golf businesses don't understand that all customers are NOT equally valuable. While featuring Lance might get a net positive effect in the short term, the reader that is alienated by such an article is likely to be the guy that would subscribe or regularly buy the magazine, as opposed to the more casual golfer/reader who would likely buy a lot fewer magazines over the long term.

Could've been in interesting article if cheating wasn't mentioned.

As soon as the 'cheating' topic enters the article my eyes roll all the way back in my head and I go unconscious.

Seriously. Why couldn't it just be about how much he enjoys the game?
Because his bad deeds and behavior overshadow his opinion about golf. If someone cheats at one sport, its not unreasonable to think he'll cheat at other sports too. Different from golf, I have been a road cyclist for most of my adult life. I watched him and rooted for him against the naysayers; thinking he couldn't... but like another #1 in golf, he did and then some.

Lance was a super athlete, he was far from the only biker, baseball, basketball, football, soccer, skier, body builder, boxing, wrestling, horse racing, HiLie, swimmer, golfers (most mood elevators), top players in any professional sport to use enhancement performing drugs. Get off the hi-horse.

Lance was made an example because he just kept winning, and of course was an American in a European Sport.

If you are looking for drug free professionals in sports......try tidily winks. Its about winning, and winning is about MONEY.

That's all well and good and everyone is allowed their opinion but where you miss the boat is not understanding that "THE MAJORITY" of public opinion is that these athletes cheated and do not belong in their respective Hall of Fames. I congadulate you for sticking to your opinion that it's OK for athletes to circumvent their natural abilities but that opinion it in the minority.

Are there murderer's, rapists, racists, thieves, adulter's and other riff raff in their respective hall of fames. Absolutely they are, but most if not all, of those athletes from those era's lived in a time when their shortcomings were not made public until decades later. Should they be thrown out of their perspective Hall of Fames? Perhaps!

Somewhere down the line we've somehow lost the ability to comprehend and understand that two wrongs don't make a right! I have to give the Baseball Hall of Fame voters kudo's so far because I really thought they would fold and put dirtbags like Bonds, Sosa, and McGuire in the hall but so far they have stood strong and done the right thing. We'll see how long that lasts.

If you want to start a petition to remove Ty Cobb or other characters that were put in the hall based on their "Natural Ability" but decades later were found to be less than desirable by all means go ahead! I wouldn't argue with you one bit. But to claim "the Majority" of people are on some high horse because they won't acknowledge the accomplishments of a cheater is not a very good argument!

In my opinion, Lance's true crime wasn't his use of performance enhancing drugs. I can understand the pressures that could lead someone to make that decision, especially if that type of cheating is rampant in your sport. It was the way he used the influence that he obtained by winning (through the use of performance enhancing drugs) to persecute and threaten anyone who tried to question him. We all make mistakes, but rather than learning from and/or acknowledging his, Lance tried to hurt those people that wanted to call him on it.

While I do acknowledge the good work his foundation did, I also don't feel that it was completely altruistic on his part. It also gave him a nice shield to throw up in front of his accusers ...

There are a lot of reasons why I love golf. One reason is that golf – and the golf course – is a haven in a more and more rude world. A place where traditional and meaningful values like decency, modesty, respect, manners or consideration for others are upheld, fostered and respected. A game where these values and the sense of fairness are appreciated.

What Mr. Armstrong did over year’s contradicts the entire meaning of our game and goes 100% against the principles and the spirit of golf. He might “just” be the most known representative and exemplary for the (probably) entire contaminated professional cycling but this does not make it any better.

Personally I think that he’s a very bad example for today’s youth and sports as such and I have no clue, cannot understand why Golf Digest offers a kind of platform to someone / is writing about someone who was cheating over years.

To read about Mr. Armstong in GD is highly irritating and embarrassing and, unfortunately, GD disqualified itself totally. Sure, they get a certain attention but the price seems high as they are losing (even more) credibility and relevance which is a pity for this magazine.

Lance disgraced his sport and himself. He may have inspired millions, but many of those were inspired to cheat or disregard the rules and laws. He should be in prison, not on GD.

By your own reasoning, unless you have survived cancer, won the TdF or taken a lot of PEDs then you have no more right to comment than anyone else. So which one was it?

Golf Digest is a joke! I get it, but only because for some odd reason I get it for free. Recent issues have lamented the lack of illegal aliens playing the game, made a hero out of the idiot that yells "babalooey", or whatever, and generally does all it can to destroy the true spirit of the game. As a kid I played competitive tennis and watched as the game was transformed from one played by "ladies and gentlemen" to one where dressing like a slob and questioning every call that goes against you is the norm. Golf is headed the same way. I'm surprised that Dan Jenkins still writes for Golf Digest. He has too much class
I'm not. Everyone needs a paycheck.

After last month and this month, I'm officially done with Golf Digest. I'm cancelling today.

I haven't read a Golf Digest magazine in years.. So this past week I was at the doctor's office waiting to be seen, and what is sitting there on the table.. >>> Golf Digest.. I figured I'd check to see of anything has changed in this sorry of an excuse publication.. Absolutely NOTHING.. It was comical that at one point I actually started to count and compare number of pages of golf information vs. ads.. There are more useless ads in that magazine then anything.. Page after page after page of cologne ads, equipment ads, etc etc.. No Thanks GD..
