A Webb Space Telescope deep field image shows Pandora’s Cluster (Abell 2744), a pileup of galaxy clusters that formed over the course of 350 million years. The composite image is displaying ~50,000 light sources in and around the object. Note the effects of gravitational lensing.

The answer is 15.

 

Six Apollo missions, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17, put two astronauts on the surface, with one remaining on the command module (6).

 

Apollo 13 didn't land on the Moon, but they had to continue their journey to it to use its gravity to swing back to Earth (3).

 

Apollo 8 was the first mission to the Moon in December '68, and orbited three astronauts (3).

 

The forgotten mission, Apollo 10, sent three men to the Moon on a dress rehearsal. Two of the astronauts took the lunar lander to within 50,000 ft of the surface before returning to the command module (3). The lander purposely didn't have enough fuel to reach the surface, or Neil would have been a unknown figure.

Barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 lies 56 million light-years away in the southern constellation Fornax. The huge galaxy is ~200,000 light-years in diameter, twice the size of our own Milky Way. At the center of NGC 7496, a barred spiral galaxy, is an active galactic nucleus (AGN). An AGN is a supermassive black hole that is emitting jets and winds. The AGN glows brightly at the center of this Webb image. NGC 7496 lies ~24 million light-years away in the constellation Grus.

Tycho’s supernova remnant (SNR), the remnant of the historical supernova SN 1572, first recorded in November of that year and named after the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. It lies 8,000 to 10,000 light-years away in the constellation of Cassiopeia.

The Malapert massif region near the Moon’s lunar south pole is one of several possible locations where NASA astronauts could land later this decade. NASA’s LRO captured this view of Malapert massif on March 3, when the probe was roughly 106 miles (170 kilometers) from Shackleton crater. NASA shortlisted this spot, and a dozen others, due to its location near the south pole and its abundance of diverse geologic features. Artemis 3 is scheduled to launch no earlier than 2025, during which two astronauts will return to the lunar surface for the first time since the 1972 Apollo 17 mission.

Wolf-Rayet star WR 124. Wolf-Rayet stars are supernovae waiting to happen. It has 30 times the mass of our Sun, and has shed ~10 solar masses. It is located ~15,000 light-years away in the constellation of Sagitta. The image is a composite taken by two Webb Space Telescope instruments, the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and the Mid-InfraRed Imager (MIRI).

Mars’s Olympus Mons, one of the largest volcanoes in the solar system. It measures 374 miles (600 km) in diameter, which is roughly the size as Arizona. Its summit caldera rises ~15 miles (24 km) above the surrounding Martian plains.
