"In physical terms, the model describes the universe as being filled with a quantum fluid. The scientists propose that this fluid might be composed of gravitons—hypothetical massless particles that mediate the force of gravity. If they exist, gravitons are thought to play a key role in a theory of quantum gravity."

Found: Early Black Hole 12 Billion Times More Massive Than Our Sun

Deep within the early universe, there lies a gigantic black hole in the midst of an extremely luminous disc. This space-time warp is so gigantic, it’s estimated to be 12 billion times more massive than our own Sun. That makes it one of the most massive deep-space black holes ever recorded.

Dwarf planet Ceres continues to puzzle scientists as NASA's Dawn spacecraft gets closer to being captured into orbit around the object. The latest images from Dawn, taken nearly 29,000 miles (46,000 kilometers) from Ceres, reveal that a bright spot that stands out in previous images lies close to yet another bright area.

According to this link, a standard tennis ball is 59.4 grams. If we multiply that by 12 billion, then this thing has a total mass of 712,800,000,000 grams (or 712,800,000 kg).

According to a quick google search, the mass of the sun is 1.9891 × 10[sup]30[/sup] kilograms. Multiply that by 12 billion and you get the actual mass of this black hole. Basically, this thing is incomprehensibly massive!

STAND BY FOR MAXIMUM MIND-BLOWIFICATION!!!

My fellow space nerds, I humbly present for your consideration, the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field image (XDF)

Why this image is mind blowing:

With the exception of a few stars (3 or 4 from what i can see) every speck of light in this image is an entire galaxy.

There are about 5,500 galaxies in this image

Each galaxy contains hundreds of billions of stars (at least)

The faintest galaxies in the image are one ten-billionth the brightness a human eye can see

The total area contained in this image is less than one thirteen-millionth of the total area of the sky!!!!!

Imagine Edwin Hubble looking at his data in 1929, scratching his head. It just don't make no sense. These "stars" are millions of light years away. Wait a minute. That's no star!

At that moment the universe "grew" from thousands of light years in size to billions of light years in size. Those fuzzy clouds were in fact galaxies, each containing billions of stars each.

I bet he took an aspirin, and had a stiff drink. Wow.

As amazing as space is, my mind gets blown thinking about the scale of the subatomic world. If the nucleus of an atom was the size of a tennis ball, the nearest electron would be ~1.2 miles away!

Neutron stars are so densely packed that their atoms have been crushed to the point that the electrons get pushed into the nucleus, where they pair with protons to form neutrons. A neutron star that weighs twice the sun's weight is smashed into a sphere 14 miles wide!

While not exactly space, I thought this might be a suitable thread for this one as it is awesome. :D Pictures are not mine, they were published here (don't peek before figuring this one out :D ): http://www.taivaanva...ions/show/47474 It's in Finnish so you won't understand it but one should always post the source.

So what is this (the answer is in the spoiler)? Aurora Borealis?

47474_1f139a3b44204e5e6625498d3d9048b1.jpg

Can you guess what it is? The answer is below.

Look at this:

47474_cf9f21b70a805f9c11d653cc9c092b24.jpg

It's the map of a town called Eura here in Finland. The snow on the ground reflects the street lights back into the sky where ice particles reflect the light back once more. The light pillars are quite a common phenomenon but the map is a bit special. How cool is that? :)
