Looks very nice, but where's he getting the balata balls from? Did he buy up a massive stock before they disappeared?

As a matter of interest, when did they disappear from the game? When I stopped playing around 1993, they were still being used. When I came back in 2010, they had disappeared completely.

Tiger won the US Open in 2000 with the Tour Accuracy, that put in motion the mass exodus to solid core balls. The pros thought, or worried, his dominant win was at least in part due to the golf ball, Titleist was forced to reluctantly release the Pro V1 for their ball/shoe/glove guys to use in 2001 (or lose them en masse to Strata/Bridgestone/Nike), and that was more or less it for the wound ball.

You can occasionally find wound balls on ebay, several years ago, I would find a particular seller with HT100s listed for a very reasonable price. I bought a few dozen, haven't checked lately. There are also guys selling new wound balls for exorbitant prices, here and there.

Catchy, you might know this better than I.... one of the batches of HT100s I picked up had an actual balata cover instead of urethane cover, and looked to have been relatively recently manufactured. I assumed they came from Japan, and wondered if there were someone still putting out wound balls in the Asian market. Maybe you could do a bit of scouting. :)

I picked up some of the urethane HT 100's last year, they play just fine especially considering they are at least 15 years old. They tend to be affected by wind and breaks of greens more than a modern ball. They do have a superior feel, I wish someone would keep making them..

Amusingly, I find them to be less affected by wind than most modern golfballs. Go figure, LOL. I've always thought the Maxfli dimple patterns superior to most everything else, when it came to wind performance.

They also fly lower for me than any other ball, and always have. Even the Maxfli Elite that I played for a bit back in the early 2000s would fly significantly lower for me. For a guy who used to jack iron shots to the moon, that was a very nice aspect.

As for feel, it's like hitting a marshmallow. :pimp:

It's part of why I've started using the Wilson Staff 50 Elite again for fall.

Wow interesting I find that downwind they fly farther and upwind go shorter than say a B330S or Pro V They are also easier to draw or fade.

The feel is great, pured shots are sensual.

EDIT: I wanted to add or qualify that the Pro V1 X is the only ball I have come across that is as workable as the old 3 piece balls. I am a big fan of that ball and I am not huge on most things Titleist..

Nard, now that I think about it, I've not paid much attention to headwinds or tailwinds, but mostly sidewind effects. The HT flies straighter for me in sidewinds that would make even a Callaway HX ball move.

Workability.... I've found the B330/B330s will move a bit.

When I put the HT into play a couple years ago, after not having played it for a while, I could only laugh as I watched a small draw come out of nowhere on a short par 3. Had to start paying more attention, LOL.

When Callaway had the HX Red and HX Blue in their lineup, they also had CTU 30 balls, both red and blue; they came with more "normal" dimple patterns. Virtually all of the senior tour players using Callaway balls used the CTU, because they couldn't move the HX balls around as they wanted. They flew too straight. :)

The bolded part is probably true for me, too. I think I hit the modern balls higher than the old wound. When I played as a kid, I wasn't a particularly high hitter, quite the opposite in fact, but now I am.

As for performance in the wind, well the modern balls are certainly better in my opinion, but the actual clubs used have an effect. When I was back in the UK last time, I took my old Titleist Tour blades out (1980 model, I think). Now these were always awful into the wind, but after coming back to the game in 2010, I put it down to the ball I used back then, rather than the club. When I hit them earlier this year, I realised it was 50-50. Even when I used a model ball, these irons span like crazy into the wind.

Anyway, I have done a brief search for balata ball makers in Japan, NRJyzr, but have found nothing so far.

My gut tells me some modern balls spin more and yet are more aerodynamic than older design. They have a higher MOI in the air and even on the putting green. They impart lots spin but the wind does not really dictate as much on the shot. The break of the green does not grab the ball as much. They slip through both better but they ultimately spin higher so if you impart side spin, they can go offline more than the HT. If I needed to draw or fade to distance in the wind, my 1st choice would be a Pro V1 X , 2nd an HT, 3rd a B330s or Pro V1. For straight shots in windy conditions, order is reversed.

Lots of folks say,'those balls are too good for your game, get real', if I was a realist I probably would not waste so much of my time on golf to start with.

Hey guys...picked these up a while back and curious if anyone knows anything about them. When they were made, who forged, tour issue only??? Love the top line and sole of these...very clean. Going to put them in bag this afternoon and see how they feel.

Don't know anything about them, but that is a really cool looking set. As mentioned above, looks to have some Don White influence (or perhaps done by him) as I know he was doing that type of muscle shape at big Macgregor and Scratch.

I think Don White also had a hand in the very last, proper Macs. Been on the lookout for a set of these for a while.

Well, we dodged a bullet yesterday. Got my shutters down and looking to play someplace this afternoon since we still have some serious residual winds and it is just downright a fun looking day to go and bat a ball around.....courses all closed so I may trespass and walk a beach course for maximum weather effects.

Looks like the inspiration for the mp5 (but better).

It's funny how a lot of 'new' or 'revolutionary' designs are just rehash of what's been forgotten. It's kind of like fashion instead of 'tech'.

I was a big fan of the 'Norman' MT line at the time and really wanted Norman to win that week.

I managed to get hold of the MT Driver, 3-wood and 2-hybrid when Mac had their fire sale but couldn't get hold of a decent set of the Pro Ms or the DW wedges. Snagged an unused set of the Pro Cs a couple of years ago and they are to me one of the finest looking clubs out there, only trumped by the Pro Ms.

There is something about the way the hosel transitions into the blade that just appeals to my eye. It's hard to explain but the Mactec M685s that I used to play, and which were accredited to Don White, also had the same look. Absolute Master Craftsman from the old school.

Those are my heads, that Byron proto is only one I have seen like that. Golds records and certificates every single putter they make or mod. His library of pics on site is amazing. They are in transit, so this is the first I have seen them. I am elated and cloud 9 with the results. i cannot wait to roll the 360g studio. It looks (I am biased of course!) like the sexiest blade putter ever, and with that weight...I am so stoked.

Yeah I was seriously rooting for him too.

Those MT's, I did not know they ever came available, I thought they were prototypes that Norman was using. At that point he had an interest in Macgregor.

The iron is a redo of an older classic Macgregor from what I know.

Norman sold Mac to Golfsmith not long after The Open and I think it has gone full circle and he's now back at Cobra as an ambassador.

That MT line from 2008 is probably the most complete range of clubs ever released in one year. 5 sets of irons covering all playing capabilities, driver, woods and those Don White wedges. They also had Bobby Grace designing the putter line with Distance Control Technology inserts. Norman played a prototype in The Open which became the Captiva for retail. I am now on my second one.

The MT Pro-M is based on the classic VIP blade...real shame that Mac is no longer around they made some fabulous clubs.

Here is the dope on the Mac Cobras.

http://www.golfwrx.c...hl__ mac cobra

Resident expert Astamm8 explains all in this thread.

I have a set and have long been interested in this model (s)

This is a great thread, one of the first I read that brought me to WRX via Google. I was looking into the history of the clubs at the time. I read it again just now, and it enlightened me on the nuances of the irons I have coming via Fleabay. Good stuff.

Is there any way we can get everybody to stop using the Reply option? Some of thes posts are just silly long as a result, and, really, it's generally not hard to figure out what a mildly well-written post is responding to. It's been addressed here before, but it's just way overused. Sorry, rant over.

Now, back to blades. IMO, nothing should be lauded as hands down the best unless everything else has been trialed. There's tons of rightful love for Miura BB here. I have two sets myself and love them. I'll probably get some more to keep handy for when mine wear. In fact, they may well be my favorite. Still, everyone wanting to declare them king of the hill should at least play a few rounds with Masda first. Just sayin. And if you buy them and don't like them, I'll probably take them off your hands.

See how annoying it is? LOL

BTW, I just sold my raw Vega VM-02 to an international buyer. He's not that keen on the 3i, so if anybody wants to buy it, I'm sure he'd be thrilled. I'm gathering components and building the set for him, so there's a little time before I have to send everything out.

Glad to hear you're safe, Biggie. I read of flooding in Florida, but that it could have been much worse.

We had two typhoons that were supposed to come our way this last fortnight or so, but both ended up missing. Quite a relief.

Anyway, those putters look gorgeous. Which club are you going to drop so you can carry both? :taunt:

The Kanji look good, and the pink-on-black (or is it nearly blacK?) is a good combination.

Well the Yoro Craft mp4's are finished and ready to go.

Had them built with ns pro 1050 stiff shafts at about D1.5

Ferals have a single silver ring and new model golf pride grips give an understated look.

Possibly a little hard to see the twilight chrome finish in the pics but it is very classy looking and has a sort of translucent darker look. I am very happy with how these turned out and will take them out for the first run on Monday. Very excited and feeling very lucky to be able to own these.

Here are some pics I promised. Sorry if my camera skills are a little lacking.

Complain about something petty, then try and sell something. Thats annoying.
