Blade users thread (NO DEBATING CLUBHEADS! NO Buy Sell Trade!)

Curious as to what percentage of users in this thread prefer driving irons over hybrids/fairway woods. Do you think there is any correlation between the die hard blade user and driving iron users?

I can't stand hybrids. I went through a phase of trying to like them but every side by side hitting session with one and an equivalent wood and/or iron resulted in an extremely underwhelming experience. Nothing was gained by it over the other clubs and it would be yet another different type of club in the bag, so I'm done with hybrids. I also find them ugly too. Not FUGLY like SGI irons ugly, but still ugly. All that said, the Titleist 585h was one I could have gamed OK.

I'm on the fence between blade 3i vs 7w and blade 2i vs 5w. It really doesn't matter but I am tending more and more towards having more blades in the bag. (LOL I can't go wrong based on the science.)

To me a hybrid is just one of my woods. No different from the 7 or the 9. They are all my children and thus, all beautiful. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Looking for opinions. I found a set of MP-67s 5-PW for $85. Also found a set of mp-68s 4-pw for $200. Third option is a set of CG1 Black Pearls for $125. All will be adjusted to the shaft, length and lie I need.

What is the best deal here? I currently hit MP-62s and I have loved them for a long time but the 7-pw grooves are really worn down and I want something a little prettier to look at this go around. Clearly on a budget with this purchase, so please don't recommend 4s or 5s. That is an easy answer, but not one of my options at the moment. Would have started a topic, but I honestly don't want GI and SGI users giving me feedback on clubs they have never really played...

At those prices I'd purchase all three sets and see where my money takes me.

I'd be shocked if you'd struggle to unload the sets that don't 'make the cut' for the cost you paid.

If that isn't financially possible I'd choose the set in the best shape and go from there.

Deninny, have you got all three of these? I'm wondering about which toplines are the thickest/thinnest and which clubheads are the largest/smallest. I suppose it would be nice to know if there was any real difference in "forgiveness" on mishits as well, but I imagine it's not much, if so.

I only own the mp67s. When they first came out, I hit the CG1s and mp68s in comparison to the mp67s. And I do a lot of anecdotal comparison testing just to "see" if there is anything gained by newer clubs. From what I could tell, there are ZERO performance and "forgiveness" differences between all three. The mp67s and mp68s have a slightly "forgiving" FEEL, but it is just a feel difference and has NOTHING to do with actual "forgiveness" in terms of miss hits being better or worse amongst all three. And LOL I will go on record right now and say that all three are going to be theoretically better for clean ball contact AND feel/feedback than those mp62s. But your own mindset and fear of blades *could* change this.

No, I think that my assumptions have been more than justified by the number of folks on this site who have told me my 62s are every bit as difficult to play as a pure blade if not more difficult. I am convinced of this. Which looked best at address to you? Did one inspire confidence any more or less?

Ideally I would do this. But if I had that much disposable money, I would probably just get a set of MP - 5s

The CG1s are actually the only one I am familiar with as I've hit them before. That's why I was wondering if anyone had hit them side by side with 67s/68s. The CG1s would be somewhat nostalgic for me so I am definitely leaning that way.

CG1's are $75 less expensive then the MP-68's. Given what you've stated I'd choose the latter and bank the $75. Could be the start of an MP-5 'slush fund' if those are the irons you are really lusting after.

Why didn't I read this thread before I sold my MP5s today (and yes Bervin, someone bought the head with the shafts). I've been playing blades forever: MP14, MP33, MP64 (not a pure blade) and thought I had to have MP5s. Gamed once last weekend, 74 with a few 3 putts. Got tired of my arch rival hitting wedge with his Callaway XRs when I was hitting 8 iron (or 3/4 7 iron). Anyway, the Callaway shovels (Apex CF 16 with recoil shafts) arrive on Friday and I can't wait to play them. It's an experiment. If it does not work, then I'll suck it up and source another set of Mizuno blades…

No doubt you'll be back in Mizzy world before you know it! I am sure I will, too! I am just short on disposable income at the moment as I just bought a house and have been remodeling it. Just need 2 months or so to get finished and I'll be ho'ing I am sure...

Oh yea boys. Got some bestgrips micro perfs coming for the mp33s. Bout to get a nice little upgrade. Gosh I love those grips. All that will be lacking is a loft/lie check and ready to roll. The grips were more than the irons but I got them in trade from a good buddy so no biggie there. That's what I play on all my clubs anyway

I am convinced of this. Which looked best at address to you? Did one inspire confidence any more or less?

LOL it's not just other experiences. It's in the physics of the design. There is nothing in the mp62 design that actually makes that club more forgiving than a blade. It's marketed as such, for sure, but when you break down the physics of its design as compared to a blade like the mp33, 67, and 68, it is exactly as others have explained: it is equally as difficult (and theoretically MORE difficult) to hit. And it starts with the larger sole size and the (pointless) perimeter weighting. Neither of these "features" is "forgiving" anything!

So before I answer your question, please allow me to explain the full context of my experience with them. At the time the mp67s came out, the CG1s I'm pretty sure were already out because when I started getting back into golf seriously ~12 years ago, I was looking at CG2s which came out at the same time as the CG1s. Because I was an ignorant golfer of the true physics of golf and I was a sucker for the HALF-TRUTH carney "science" of "forgiveness", I didn't think I had the game for blades and that I "needed" "forgiveness", so ultimately instead of getting CG1s and also passing on a beautiful used set of Mac VIP V-foils (of which I still deeply regret), I got the CG2s and gamed them for a season until I reached my "get blades goal" of getting my index below bogey. Then I decided to get the mp67s but I did hit them side by side with the CG1s and ultimately chose the mp67s for the best looks and feel over mp32s, CG1s, and Titleist 595 Z MBs (<- don't quote me on 595...all I remember was they were the "Z" MBs). The reason I mentioned all of this is because at the time I was a blade novice and did not know the subtleties of how all blades feel a little different from each other until years later after comparing everything new against my mp67s and trying other blades my friends played. And in the process of this about a year after I had the mp67s, and had already tried the CG1s, I also tried the mp68s. And when I say try and compare, I would hit a bucket of balls at the same golf store that I bought the mp67s and compare the 3i and 6i of the latest/greatest blade with my mp67 3i and 6i. Main point being is that I do a lot of comparison and reference of any new club against the same club # in my gamer set.

So anyway, with all this and to answer your questions, I would say that at the time, the mp67 was the most visually inspiring and aesthetically pleasing, and the CG1 was the more "intimidating" club, but had I known then what I know now about the physics and such, I would put all of them about equal in terms of looks at address and inspiring.

You are making a (LOL...first world) "tough" decision. On one hand, the mp67s are near perfect in terms of looks but that cut muscle takes a little off the "blades experience" and you aren't getting a full set. On the other hand, the CG1s are the more "perfect" blade design but I share the same concern as Kingcat about the potential feel difference from Mizuno. But since you are used to it and familiar with CG1 feel, maybe it won't be such an issue. And on the third hand, the mp68s are somewhere in between the two. Put a gun to my head and I still say go with CG1s FTW, but realize this is like choosing Kate Upton over Stephanie Seymour and Kathy Ireland...you really can't go wrong with any choice. Seriously.

Oh and since I already had a bunch of pics, here is how my mp67 6i looks in comparison to my baby blade 6i from multiple angles:

Ok so just for an update my 2i "wear spot" experiment isn't working out so well because the entire black boron coating is wearing from rubbing against grass as much as contact with the ball. Here is the evolution of the face wear from 1) brand new to 2) after one round to 3) after about three rounds and a small bucket of range balls:

It is tough to tell, but at this point it seems that I am wearing a round-ish spot a little closer to the hosel than at the dead center of the clubface. Anyway, over time a wear spot may become more clear and distinct, but at the moment it is really tough to tell what is ball wear vs grass rubbing. Regardless, I'm going to keep it in the gamer bag and I'm very good with the wear spot being where it is because it feels awesome hitting it wherever that may be.

leather grips + blades = perfect combination

I am hitting a set of satin BBs with Iomic 'silastomer' grips for practice and black boron BBs with GripMaster leather grips for money games and the improvement in feel with leather is significant. It takes the edge off the harsh sting of a miss hit but you still get good feedback with it.

I am eventually going to put leather grips on all my blades. I am thinking of at least one set with Bestgrips. I like the blue limited edition gridirons the best just 'cause the color will go with my Cal paintfills. I have only held the microperfs once and they feel great. I may put them on my wife's Hogan Vector Lites first and LOL use her set as my trial into Bestgrips. Have you ever tried any types besides the microperfs? They seem almost too tacky for a two glove golfer like me. And I'm not sold yet on the less taper, but it is not a big deal. I can see how guys that don't use a glove would love them.

Micro Perfs are on all my sticks now and the only ones I've tried. I need as sticky as possible cause my hands sweat profusely. Hard for me to get through a range session with an mcc grip and 5 gloves. Micro perfs make it 1-2 gloves and don't lose their grip at all. Absolutely love them. They've changed the game for me. I use to have to carry a rosin bag with me or use dry hands or something repeatedly. Not anymore.

Folks, I have a bit of a query I wouldn't mind a little help from my learned friends on the subject of putters. I currently have a Yonex Super A.D.X Tour Forged putter (Wilson 8802 style), which I purchased in 1996 and has pretty much been in the bag ever since. I absolutely love the thing - feels great, puts a fantastic roll on the ball, and my distance control is spot on with it - pretty much all I am looking for in a putter. It just has one massive flaw - becuase Yonex took it upon themselves to dip it in Chrome after forging, if the sun is at the wrong angle, it reflects straight off the back of the putter into my eyes - less than ideal I'm sure you'll agree. I played a round in the sun on Sunday, I only 3 putted once, and it was the only hole I was blinded on.

Does anyone have any idea on how to stop this without ruining the feel or performance of the putter?

You could take it to Golf Alchemy over near Redditch to get it refinished. You may get tempted by one of their Custom Factory putters though...be warned before opening the link!!

Thanks for all the suggestions folks, I think we have a winner :) I was hoping to be able to leave the face chromed (so I can blind other people) and get the top line redone in Satin, looks like these guys can assist. Very tempted to get them to add a Batman logo as well :)
