I bought my wife a fancy hair dryer for Mother's Day.  (She told me which one to buy.) She used it for the first time this morning.

I asked her how it went and she said it was great but she didn't know if she was using it correctly. I told her that's exactly how I feel when I pick up a sweet set of blades. I know they'll look great in my hand, but I wonder whether I'll do them justice. She looked at me blankly.

I bought my wife the Dyson one a couple years ago when they were just starting to become the “it” thing. It works sooo well for heating up shafts/old tape just enough to pull it off easily but not get too hot.

Oh man, that was fun. Srixon was having a demo day at McKay Creek, so I signed up to try the driver. As he was looking over my bag, he asked about my irons. He built up a ZXi 7 for me to try and it was ok. I couldn't get over the thick top line, I thought I was hitting my driving iron. 🤣

He said "you will hate the looks, but you will love the feel of this" and he hands me the ZXi4. Not sure if it was the shaft or what, but it was fat, fat, fat, thin, fat, fat. He says "Hit your 7 so I can see what's going on." Stripe, stripe, stripe, slightly toey, stripe.

I would like to try the ZXi7 on the grass to try out the sole. But not sure I could get used to the looks.

These are what I'm still playing.

I was going to start a post, share a story when I saw this. Back in 2019 I first saw the Wilson Staff model blades. I’m 57, 15 handicap, have beaten 80 twice and am lucky enough to live across two places where the “second set” includes a set of mint Nike ProCombos 3-PW.

Having gone down the hybrid and GI path in my main bag I am all in on the hybrids, not the GI irons, the results show! Wind back a few weeks ago my favourite golf shop had an unused, still in plastic set of the 2019 Wilson Staff Model blades. They are gorgeous, 3-PW with shafts at + .5” (I am 6ft 4” tall).

We’re heading to winter down under, my driver is now around 230-240 yards, 7 iron around 155-160 yards with a good swing. Can I hit these blades, yes! 7 iron might now be 6 iron but  who cares. The pure strikes make it all worth while, the bad shots are going to happen in any case. But, the look of these irons, the added fun, so worth it! Wish I’d pulled this trigger earlier.

Get yourself into some persimmon woods and driver now and you really have some fun.😁

The bag 2025 is all new except putter & wedges. K. Burns putter & Faldo wedges stay.

Driver: R7 425TP w/stock 75g Rombax shaft & augmented weight setup

#5W; Paradym T head w/ Mitsu X

#3i-PW: Nike VR Pro II w/S300

Bag: Vessel V Pro

Real happy with setup, Nike's are yielding more birdie looks than have had in awhile. The paradym is great, old school w/ modern hot face. Have a D & #3W to yet shaft, that's coming. Vessel V Pro is best stand bag i ever owned. Game is C grade, and moving up but bag is A grade.image000000(8).jpg.f22a7879995c3053cb580e1e632d1dfb.jpg,

Yeah pricing for clubs can be nutty, be patient, i've spent as much as 3 years looking for particular sets that were at right value, so just keep eyes open.

Edit To Add: The TM P7TW is essentially the same club. Match the build, pretty doubtful one could tell much difference.

Except no left TW. If only...

That's the rub, if you have 2 or more lefties looking at an auction, it might get ugly. If you are the only one, you can get a steal.

LH, you'd probably be surprised how often you cross my mind when I gander through the secondhand market abroad, roll the stone over on a niche brand online, or walk into the PGA superstore to kick the tires on irons with the launch monitor on a Tuesday morning at 9AM when they open on how narrow the world of blades are for a left handed sommelier. Blades are already a sparse market. I feel for you.

Every iron TW used holds value. They all had a lot of tour adoption too, so it's more than just who played them, the irons are pretty good. So it comes down to, what's a fair price in that context? Maybe clubs that Hogan played have this kind of mojo but there's very few iron sets have this much desirable worth. New MB's are all over the map but looks like even pedestrian offerings are around $1750. High end can be $3500. So LH used at $900? Is that crazy in that context? Depends on condition but it can be rationalized.

The big variable is shaft. Like for me a PX or X100 is worthless. Rebuilding to fit can run an extra $400, so i used to buy MB's with little regard of shaft, at a certain point i stopped that altogether. Shaft became a hard pass/fail. My days of hoeing MB's are done, but only acquired clubs that got any real bag time had a build i liked.

I have had the P7 TW’s in the bag this year and would go as far as saying they are the best irons I have ever played.

I made the conversion to blades (Miura KM 700) about 2 years ago and have not looked back. As Nick said (and I'm sure others since I'm commenting many years later), the feel and feedback is unmatched. I've also learned that wider soled and "more forgiving" clubs actually hinder my iron striking as the wider soles bounce off the ground instead of getting through it.

I had tried various player's distance and game improvement irons but never liked the look of the thicker clubs (especially seeing the sole at address) or feel of hitting hollow-bodied irons or foam filled clubheads. The thing that irked me the most was the overcooked, low spin shot that suddenly is 10-20 yards over the target then never appeared for a few rounds. If I got the itch to play blades, I always got the voices of others saying that I didn't have the ability, that everyone goes through this phase, or which great tour pros didn't play blades. I settled on Miura CB 301 irons to try and satisfy the desire for the feel and performance consistency of blades while having a "more forgiving" iron, and I managed to even lower my handicap from a 12 to an 8. However, most of that was from hitting driver better and farther, but I still had the allure of blades pulling on me.

I took the leap and bought a used set of heavily discounted Srixon Z-Forged blades and practiced and played a couple of rounds with them, and was instantly hooked. The club didn't bounce off the ground, good shots felt great, great shots were unmatched, and sure the bad shots sucked, but the competitor in me wanted to continue practicing to get better to not hit bad ones anymore and keep flushing shots. I played baseball through college and loved hitting with wood bats. Sure, they would break, but nothing felt better than solid hits, and the sensation with blades was no different.

I then sold those to my brother as he was going through the same spiritual blade journey before signing up for a fitting. I had seen the KM700s come out and knew I wanted them, plus the idea of a "more forgiving blade" seemed like a win-win, but I wanted to justify that going from CB301s to KM700s was actually a benefit and not just my desire to play blades. Significant upgrade: hit my irons farther, a touch higher, more spin, better descent into greens, and better consistency, plus they are a great to look at!

IMG_0661.jpg.4cfaa580a3fa7260a2f721f1cd31bb5e.jpgIMG_0664.jpg.7a4f6b73be073d19acd81ea381368492.jpg

The only issue is now I have not been playing as much. My wife and I bought our first house, work ramped up coming out of covid, and we just had our first child, a son. I just put the golf net up in the backyard, and I am ready to keep chasing that feeling and am excited to one day share the joy of the great game and flushing a blade with my son.

Hell yeah brother!  Awesome to hear this!

What’s up homies?   Golf season is here again, not much new with me except I’m not sure if it was playing as much as I did last year or what but I have about 10 rounds under my belt, and so far so good.   I don’t want to jinx it but I’m feeling comfortable with the game, everything has a little rust on it, but I don’t think I have more than 5 9s in the 40s so far.  Sorta turning a corner where those 70s rounds are just becoming, I don’t want to say easier, but more normal even with some hiccups.   I’m over the moon with the kyoei blades and the modus 105s, my GIRs have been noticeably better even though I do this for fun and don’t track these things, you always kinda know.  I’m so happy that those Vegas stuck in my head and I tried them again.

Nothing exciting gear wise, I think my bag is totally set, 12 clubs even lol.   I may get some artisan wedges just cause  to try those and they are cheap enough used, and I want an elyte mini driver as tee game is still my scoring handicap, but those are not cheap enough at all yet.  It’s pretty weird for this ho to surf auctions out of habit just to keep tabs on things and not even wanting anything.

Yo Biggie!

Mini driver comment first...  check the previous iteration of the Cally mini.  It's said to be quite similar, and some have gone so far as to say they felt the Elyte was not quite as good as the Ai Smoke mini.  I've not tried either, so can't comment with experience.  😐

After a few years of trying to go lighter with shafts, I'm really looking at going back to nothing lighter than 110 or 115, maybe even going back to the DG weight class.  I'm really struggling with iron play with 95g shafts, and have for the last two full seasons.  105g (raw weight) seems to be about as light as I can go.  I'm about to play my set of Ram FX Nickels today, which have DGS parallel in them.

I get what you mean about surfing auctions with no interest.  I've been doing that off and on since before you started this thread.  Few things pique my interest these days, except possibly checking for backups for my Golden Ram collection.  LOL

I am not sure what modern is to you, and you may want to stay mizuno, but I have to be a bad influence here and recommend something like this and reshaft with used pulls of your flavor.

NRJ, nice to chat again.   I’m like a bear that forgets about golf and hibernates until the next season lol.

yeah, my wedges are 85g and I wouldn’t believe I get along with them as I do, flight them, control them and I just love them.  On paper it makes no sense for precision clubs, but that isn’t reality for me with them.

Big tip on the ai smoke mini.  Found a head only for $290, which sucks cause clubs are so much now, but I do have a nice loop shaft that didn’t make driver and I can cut that down and also I can get my 3 wood shaft I like a lot (Ad mt-7) for $38 so like $65 to my house in case.  I mean if I like it in 3 wood it stands to reason……it is x flex though but I think that’s ok to keep the mini straighter and lower, and my 105 driver speed should be ok enough.   I played 9 yesterday and ended up with a 38, but I hit 3 fairways so it took 2 birdies to get there.  My misses are more contained with more looks, but shooting 74-79 hitting 5-8 fairways is really about the best I can ask of the rest of my game realistically.   My keep it under a tree and run up to a green with a 5-7 iron punch game has been nasty though lol.   So the weak link is still driver and my home course is short at 6300, the difficulty is the raised greens that fall off and the greens themselves, so mini would be fine and no ego loss of using a 3 wood hahaha.   Plus one of the groundskeepers legit loves carnival placements because whenever there is one there are 5 so I know he does it on purpose.  One of the few the other day was legit 2 paces on and green running away toward that 2 paces.  I had to lay up a birdie putt ffs.
