Blade users thread (NO DEBATING CLUBHEADS! NO Buy Sell Trade!)

Aaaaaannnnd, the swing is back!!! I went to the range today for the first time in a week or more, mostly clear of all my ailments (pulled hamstring and some sort of knee issue), and worked on something I had noticed while at work...I knew I had been swinging too flat, but couldn't pin down the underlying cause. Everything I did to get the club up steeper in the backswing seemed to exacerbate the problem, and I was getting really fed up. Then one day late at night at work, I was on the phone, and it was a rather long call. I stood up to walk around (cordless phone) and, while holding the phone in my left hand, I happened to pick up a pitching wedge that some careless person had left lying around, and started swinging it with my right hand only. Bingo! Without thinking about it, I was getting the club into the right position at the top of the backswing. When I was swinging with both hands at the range and on the course, I was pinning my right elbow to the side of my body and kind of rotating my arms and the club around that point, so bringing it back really flat. When I swung with the right hand only, I couldn't naturally do this, so the club was getting in the right position.

So, the range session today: while working on what I had noticed in the office, I hit side-by-side the MP-4 and MP-69 PW and 7i, and the Mac VIP 6i and 9i, which are basically equivalent to the PW and 7i in the Mizuno sets.

The Macs were slightly longer, but that's to be expected as they are both a degree stronger and have slightly longer shafts. The PW was maybe 2-3 yards longer, and the 6i 3-5 yards. The Macs were also the straightest, but the hardest to hit right. I think that's because the shafts are longer, and they have ProjectX shafts in them which I am still getting used to. My mishits with the Macs were a groove or two thin, which is an unusual mishit for me. The 69s and 4s were similar in terms of length, but the 69s were a tad more consistent, especially with hits a little towards the heel (my normal mishit) whereas the 4s felt the best of all three sets. They have this satisfying soft-yet-solid feel to them.

CliffsNotes version: blades are bloody great when you're hitting the ball well!

Maybe its been discussed on this thread before but I wasn't finding a whole lot discussed about Fourteen Golf.

I stumbled on these today and me oh my, these are quite gorgeous IMO. Anyone know anything about these irons?

I played them last fall and early this spring. They are a decent blade. I never had any problems with them. I'd game them again. You can get a much better price on Rakuten. I paid $700 for 5-P

Update. Yoro craft mp4 heads have arrived and are currently at the builders getting shafted with ns pro 1050 S. Get them next week so pics will follow soon. Really looking forward to this set going in the bag. BTW the heads are stunning in twilight chrome. :taunt:

Stay tuned.

Niiiiiice. I was considering the NS 1050 or 1150 for the Mac VIPs. I've hit some MP-4s with the NS 1050 and liked them. They're a different beast from the DG shafts I am used to, but I think I could grow to like them.

I was due to go for a shaft fitting tomorrow but it has been postponed. Long time DG S300 player and no real experience of other shafts apart from Wilson Firesticks from the 90s (!) and Rifle Flighted 5.5s. The Rifles felt 'smooth' compared to S300s but I did exaggerate my already high ballflight. How do the NS1050 compare to the S300s?

Long time DG S300 player and no real experience of other shafts apart from Wilson Firesticks from the 90s (!) and Rifle Flighted 5.5s. The Rifles felt 'smooth' compared to S300s but I did exaggerate my already high ballflight. How do the NS1050 compare to the S300s?

Crikey, that's a tough question. For some reason, I don't get on very well with the S300s. It's difficult to describe, but I found that the 1050s (S) smoother, or to put it another way, I felt confident that I could swing smoothly and let the shaft do the work. They were a little light for me, but surprisingly easy to hit. I didn't have a timing problem that I seem to get with Modus 120s, for example. However, I wasn't on trackman when I tried this shaft, so I don't have spin data. But I really want to give them a proper test some time.

Oh, and I've played PX 5.5 shafts briefly. I prefer the 1050s. I also have Brunswick 5.5s in my MS-11s, and I think they are softer than the 1050s. But I haven't played them side-by-side, so that's not a very precise opinion.

Do they make the 1150 in X? I swear by my 1150s, love them.

And since no catchy said it, I agree, they feel so harsh compared to what you expect from a Japanese forged blade that you do wonder if it is "for real".

They do apparently, and also 1050 in X. Never seen them in the wild, but that's what I wanted to try for my VIPs.

Thanks for the answer. Your description of 1050s being smoother tallies with my current experience with the S300s. I'm finding that I feel that I have to swing harder than I want to with the S300s to get the results that I want. I suspect that I have lost a bit of swing speed (age, feeling less nimble, etc) and the thought of a smoother, lighter shaft is very appealing at the minute as my timing has totally gone to pot.

I am a 0 handicap currently and play MP-33s. I have MP-69s but the 33s are just something special so I am gaming them. I prefer blades simply because the thin sole works for the way I swing better than wider soles. I tend to get much better distance control with them as well over CBs. I also tend to like heavier shafts in my clubs, like DG weight, than lighter shafts. I like to swing hard and with lighter shafts I get out of sequence.

This year, I would like to add Titleist 714 MBs to the arsenal. I've always loved Titleist irons as well as Mizuno and some of my best golf has been played with Titleist MBs, the 681 to be precise. Still have those irons too and pull them out time to time.

Hard to beat a Titleist MB. Hasn't changed in 10 years which should tell you something.

That's exactly how I feel with the S300s (but not with the X100s. Don't know why). If so, I think the NS 1050 or 1150s would be worth a try, but I don't know what they cost over there (you are in the UK, aren't you?).

And they are about to tee off? Here. WE. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

I don't think that the demand for changing shafts is very high in the UK...people tend to stick with what they have bought off the shelf, hence the lower price methinks. Perhaps I ought to build a stock up...may be limited to old Apollo shafts by Accles and Pollock after Brexit ;-)

Hah! Do they still make those?

Who knows, if the Brexit goes ahead, we may be limited to shafts made out of papier-mache and British grit!

Between you and me and the rest of the Internet, I paid about 50 quid a shaft for my ProjectXs, thought that includes the fitting work as well, which was pretty thorough and very good.

Accles and Pollock no longer exist unfortunately...gone the way of most UK manufacturing.

Wow! You can get a set of PX shafts, 4-PW for £250 over here (not fitted), but that is still £100 more than the Nippons. (£24 single shafts, £150 4-PW). I'm not sure what my fitter will work out at cost wise...hopefully he's reasonable!!

I vaguely considered doing it all in the UK. I have a set of Macgregor heads that I might take back with me next time and get them done in the UK.

Just gifted a stranger in Myanmar a lot of money.....hope to recover my golds modded putters pretty soon.....I am super excited!

God I hope so!!!! LOL.....I am still now not 100% sure I am not going to get a knockoff since any good machinest can in theory can do it....but I am supossed to get paperwork as well and I am expecting them to weigh out and be top notch. Usually I buy things with a proper expectation, and this one has me nervous becuase frankly the proper expectation for this is the best machinist modification work on a putter in the world, so it is a lot different butterflies than me sniping something used on auction at a discount and seeing how it cones in.

Didn't mention his name as it wouldn't mean anything to anyone on here. If you must know his name is Doug and he is a friend of mine. He has a small business doing all things in club building and has been doing it for over 30 years. He has a wealth of knowledge and builds sets to a very high standard taking all parameters into consideration. Is that better?

Ok. The Nippon 950 and 1050 are the same shaft in profile with the 10 grams extra weight being the only difference. They play a little soft to flex, are very smooth feeling but that does not stop them from being very stable and "tight". They are a great for for me, as you would realise I am older and gave up S300 quite a while ago as they are too much work to load and get to perform properly. The 1150 tour is a different shaft altogether. They have a stiffer butt and are more similar to S300 than any other Nippon shaft. They probably are easier to play due to the lighter weight and although mid launch are probably a touch higher than the S300.

I can still play an S300. They are very accurate for me but I loose a little distance and the heavier weight means I have to work harder to get through 18 holes hitting good shots.

The 1150 tour are a better fit coming from S300 than going to 1050. The 1050 are higher launchers.

Hope this helps.

Oldplayer, that is spot on thank you. Looks like the 1150 might be a better fit for me given my not-quite-Stensonesque high ball flight. Loading up the S300s has been an issue this year and it is time to move on...feeling like an 'older player!' ;-)

Update. Yoro craft mp4 heads have arrived and are currently at the builders getting shafted with ns pro 1050 S. Get them next week so pics will follow soon. Really looking forward to this set going in the bag. BTW the heads are stunning in twilight chrome. :taunt:

Stay tuned.

Soooo... ummm... do I just get the name of the dude working in the shop at PGA Superstore and start calling him "the builder" like "Sorry I'm late guys, I had to drop the new blades off at Rick my builder. He does great work and I had to make sure we are on the same page. The blueprint is going into effect."

The same Doug who also participates on Pingboy's forum? :)

I'm currently about 3 hours NW of home, visiting my friend who moved up this way over the summer. He put out the call for a possible golf trip, and with the wife having gone to Key West a couple weeks ago, she thought it only fair I go. :)

Played yesterday at what may be the tightest course I've ever seen. Only 6100-6200 yes from tips, but tree lined with little room off most fairways, lot of doglegs, and some narrow greens with more than their share of slope to them. Green speeds were slow, which they had to be, due to the slope/contour, or they'd be unplayable.

Still using the Ram FX in my profile, recently acquired from the most excellent WRX Classic folders stalwart, Teevons. And quite lovely they are. They're not as soft as the Aussie Blades I bring up from time to time, but they're not bad. A set worthy of the Ram name, imho.

My round yesterday was... "interesting." I alternated pars and doubles on the front, wound up with a 44, +8. Kept getting myself in trouble, such as an overcooked draw on the deep but very narrow green on the Par 3 #2, where I faced a second shot from some 10 ft above the hole with virtually no green to work with. Add slope and you get double, LOL.

On the back, things started differently, string of bogeys instead of the alternating par/double thing. Make my first par on a short par 4 with a fairway interrupted by a creek, hit 5 iron off tee. Next hole, 3 iron over trees to fairway, 9 iron to green, make the 20 footer for birdie. How about that?

Next hole is interesting. Elevated tee, 310 yard par 4, but it dogs to the left, 3 pot bunkers interrupting fairway at 210 out. Hit my hybrid over trees at the green, wind up some 15 yds short of green to a front pin. And surprise of surprises, I hole the chip for eagle. Birdie/eagle, woo!

Next hole, I blow sand save by forgetting about the slow greens, leave a 7 ft putt short. Cruise to last hole, a 450 yard par 5, downhill, then uphill, sloping tight fairway, to a super narrow green that's probably 35 yds deep. Hit great drive, 8 iron to the back pin, and sink 15 footer for my second eagle of the back 9. I was moderately jazzed, LOL.

Wound up with a 79, going 1-under on the back. 44/35, the model of consistency! Felt good to be under par on the nine, but it was strange, with 2 eagles, 1 birdie, 4 bogeys, and 2 pars. Its an odd feeling...

Sorry for the length, but this is what happens when you wake up at 4am for no reason and have time on your hands in someone else's house. ;)

Maybe its been discussed on this thread before but I wasn't finding a whole lot discussed about Fourteen Golf.

http://www.pgatoursu...9.jsp?rrec=true

I stumbled on these today and me oh my, these are quite gorgeous IMO. Anyone know anything about these irons?

I'm with Bigmean on this one, although I didn't mind the looks so much. When I hit them, they felt really harsh. Like, "is this for real?" harsh. I like Fourteen's clubs (I would happily play more of their clubs if they were more affordable....), but those blades didn't do it for me.

IMO they didn't have a harsh feel but a little bit "clickier" less soft feel. Still felt soft when fushed. I played the FH1000's for about 7 months, great club just wanted different shafts and the ones I wanted were going to cost $400, no thanks.
