So these happened today. TaylorMade was doing free fittings at Quail Valley so I thought why not. Ended up with a 2* upright 1/2" longer Ventus 60g regular flex shaft that produced numbers almost as good as my current Haywood MB's. 🤣 $208 a club (vs $95 per my existing setup).

They are nice, but I was pulling everything right.

They are really good looking. The chrome is a bit much, but you don't notice at address, or I didn't anyway. I would have liked to try it with a heavier shaft, but he wanted me to go lighter trying to get my ball speed up or something.

I really like the look of P7MB, would love to try them.

The dude wasn't sure how to even put together the quote with the graphite shaft, the kid working with him had to show him. He had mentioned they had the UST Recoil like I have on order but it wasn't one we tried for some reason.

Aye 60g would be far too light for me - I tried my buddy's G430 irons over the weekend with Modus 105s in them - even they seemed a bit on the light side.

I can imagine they'd be a lovely club with S400s in them however.

In other news I had a proper range session on Saturday to try and sort my ball striking out I'd been complaining about. Focused on my takeaway and backswing and keeping stuff on plane - and in yesterday's competition it was massively improved, with only one chunky short iron.

Just a shame the rest of my game fell apart 🤣

My inner cynic can't help but wonder if this guy just didn't quite know what he was doing.  It's possible 60g shafts can work for an adult male, but I wouldn't count it in the "likely" category.

90g, 100g, perhaps.  Maybe even 80-something.

Who knows, maybe they'll work great, once you adjust to the lighter weight, coming from your Haywoods...

Yeah, I really didn't care for the feel of that 60g, but he kept pushing the numbers. He showed me a cool trick with a dry erase marker. He put a heavy line on it and pointed it at the club face. After I hit the line had transfered to the face to show how the face was oriented at impact as well as strike location.

That's a lie angle thing, maybe a flex thing, not shaft weight. I've seen able bodied men on course with 60g shafts. don't understand it.

Im going to correct myself on a previous comment but yeah you can alter lie impact by lighter shaft. Shaft droop at impact can be altered by it. That's a function flex profile, torque & weight. So I was wrong, lol.

Don't mind "lighter" to get better numbers but at some point it's the wrong medicine. At 45 years old a PW has 60g shaft, what happens at 65 or 75, what are you swinging then? I've seen this in bags and no I was not being nosy, but there's only so much gear can do, there's so much more the swing can do. It's pretty much why I stay with classic setup. To get the swing to do better.

On demo day dude is not going to drop S400 in a setup if he has DG 120's there, he wants the numbers to impress never mind the long term. It explains loft creep too and the whole high launch /low spin design ethos. Looks great on demo day, not so much on the course.

Played with able golfer, he had a fresh bag, latest & greatest. He couldn't stop the ball on green and it wasn't his swing. He had the height the distance, plenty of both but if his ball stopped near divot he had a lot more birdie looks, but they all ended up as 30 foot approaches. He's playing older gear, he would be doing better, might need extra club but better.

I’ll take the extra club any day! I know what I’m getting, very trusty and, if the final outcome is not what I was expecting, it’s my fault!  Had this same conversation with a former local shop owner last night!

I'd like to know exactly how yoked the ladies of yesteryear were. Got to mess around with some MacGregor Barbara Romack Tempos today. Wish I'd taken a pic because none of the few results I found when searching are the exact blade.

To the original comment, the only thing that seemed to be designed for the ladies was a smaller diameter, shorter shaft that's easier to load. I'd assumed they'd taken a decent bit of weight out of ladies heads back then, but those things were thicc. They were heavier than anything I've ever actively played since I've never bagged anything classic and seemed to be the same weight as other clubs from that era I've gotten my hands on. Also had the same knife blade leading edge that was the norm at the time.

Kind of cool that the ladies were getting it done with those back then. I can certainly see why the best of them had such fluid swings.

So I'm being told the Takomo 301 MB will be available in lefty in June. So if I like the way the UST Recoil feels in the 3 iron, I will get a set and reshaft the Haywood's and use the Kuro Kage for the Takomo's. Should be a fun summer.

Blades are back in the bag. Have had a set of 1985 Titleist Tour Models I've played off & on for close to 20 years. But for the last 6 years have been playing AP2, T100, 718 CBS, and Srixon 765 and ZX7.  Numbers are great. Scoring not so much.

Just purchased a beautiful set of Mizuno MP-33s. After a couple of days my ballstriking seems to have greatly improved. Less swinging from the heels, more focused on tempo, and hitting down on the ball. Less picking, bigger divots.

Hitting 3 of 4 greens 115-150 instead of 1 in 4.

Is this just the honeymoon period, or is there something to it?

Definitely something to it…..

Timely with all the regular flex and graphite shaft talk... I have a new set of Steelfiber i95 cw in R flex about to get some Nike VR TW heads put on them, 5-pw.  I don't need 120g steel shafts anymore.

So I was fit this last weekend for my entire bag. As you can see in my sig I play old stuff. I was fit for it and it works for me.

But I decided to get fit for the first time in 15 years just to see what modern stuff feels like. I was NOT looking for distance. Very happy with my current distances and happy that i can still move the ball at my age.

I made it more challenging for the fitter because I said I wanted to keep my distances and gaps.

So for my irons we went thru a bunch of shafts (metal and graphite) including the Steelfibers. What felt the best to me and gave the same dispersion and only slightly more distance (5 yards) over my current irons was the Fuji Pro 95 stiff flex.

Not making the switch now but when I buy my next set of irons I will put in the Fujis.

Similar issue...several holes at my course have been under the River Severn for a few weeks!!

Long irons are very good atm and I've never hit my 3-wood off the deck better, but I am coming in very steep with short irons, catching it slightly fat and taking dinner plate sized divots with the ball going nowhere!! I've noticed my swing becomes very 'armsy' with shorter clubs and I'm trying to focus on properly turning my shoulders and turning through the ball rather than chopping into the back of the ball...limited success so far!!

Just play your specialist severn iron for every shot and you should be OK....

Sorry

Catchy, those are reasonably attractive    🙂

A thought on the MS-4's....   I don't know that they were ever released as the MP-4.  At least not that I've seen anywhere?  Hence, the MP-4 name for the set from 2014.
