Hampton, VA area

I have recently been offered a position in Hampton, Va and am giving it some consideration. Good offer with a quite progressive company.

Looking for feedback from the WRX community in most all terms of livability.

What areas might I consider as home that keeps me within maybe 45 minutes of Hampton .( I will be there without family),

Courses to play, Mens club to join,? Etc...

[/quote] Depending on your budget, I would suggest the Williamsburg area(nicer, slower paced, also generaly more expensive) North of Hampton. 45 mins south brings you to Virginia Beach( generally less expensive than Williamsburg, but nicer than Hampton.) I personally would avoid living in the Hampton/Newport News area all together as I feel and this is just my opinion that crime is more rampant in this part of town. The Hampton/Newport News area is on a Peninsula, where as Chesapeake/Virginia Beach are on the Southside. There are two tunnels you can take but traffic is a nightmare on a daily basis if you are trying to get to one side or the other during rush hour. There is also Chesapeake which is a nice middleground that has been steadily growing for the past decade or so. As to men's leagues, I am unsure as I do not belong to any but every course seems to have a group you can join. Most golfers here tend to be more on the elderly side and I rarely see golfers my age(30) who take the game seriously out on the course. Not to say they aren't out, I just don't run into them or if I do they are the once a year golfers who just want to get out with their friends for fun and a drink.

In my brief searching, it looks like Hampton is much more the industrial area and I did see Williamsburg as a more likely a homefront.
What part of town are you and what courses might you choose within an hours drive or so?

I agree with USMCVET that you would want to avoid living in Hampton or Newport News, crime is much worse in those areas. Williamsburg or the Yorktown area is probably your best bet for a good quality of living without giving yourself a horrible drive to work. There are some fantastic golf courses in Williamsburg as well as all the good restaurants you would expect of a tourist town. Depending on how you feel about traffic on your commutes to and from work, the HRBT can be a nightmare especially if there is a wreck, the Virginia Beach area is nice. There is some good golfing on both public and private courses and plenty of other things to make living nice. My normal group of friends usually tries to take advantage of the big variety we have in the area and we'll play wherever sounds nice that weekend ranging from Elizabeth City N.C.(about an hour south of us at the beach) up to Williamsburg with some of the beach local favorites being The Signature, Heron Ridge, and VB National.

You guys that live around there, what would you think about him living in Suffolk near Sleepy Hole or Riverfront and commuting to Hampton across the Monitor-Merrimac? Is that just asking for a daily traffic disaster? And I haven't played either course in years.

Also, what do you think about Newport News around James River CC, behind Christopher Newport? Another course I haven't played, but seems like a nice membership facility from what I can see online.

I like Sleepy Hole and Riverfront. They're both fun golf courses and are usually some of the better maintained in the area, especially for the price. Riverfront is in a nice little area with some beautiful homes on and near the course, but Sleepy Hole is getting out there a ways without much else nearby. Having to go across any of the bridges or tunnels to work everyday would be a deal breaker for me personally though cause I would hate the traffic.

I've never played James River so I'm no help to you there.

When i lived in that area, it seemed as though there was more crime in Virginia Beach than most other areas.

Hey Guys.
I really appreciate all the input, but the company making the offer to me to relocate and I could not reach agreement and the deal is off.
However, in this research, I found a whole host of courses I now wanna play, so maybe a spring trip down and meet up with a few of the responders?
Weather looks like it been a bit rough lately and I'm in the middle of a month long project so maybe end of March?
Most courses would likely be open and in pretty good shape by then, eh?
