Good Mallet Style for Under $200

Recommended Posts

I haven't done much research yet. Only one I've seen is the Ping Nome TR, which I've found new for about $169 on Amazon. Am I better off trying to get a used one of the higher end models? I like the mallet style and something with a heavier head. Thoughts? Thoughts on the Nome TR? Did a search but not much came up on here.

There are a lot of options in your price range - good new putters, or used high-end ones. Since you don't seem to know exactly what you want, have you considered buying a few different used ones for cheap to kind of zero in on what attributes you like best? Materials, milling/inserts, site lines, grips, etc.
I do this and treat them as long-term demos. You can sell them (usually at prices around where you bought them) when you figure out which ones you don't like.

Then you can buy a new model of exactly what you are looking for.

Thanks all for the ideas. I am not getting fitted so I think I will have to try a bunch of them and might buy a couple to see which one I like and sell the ones I don't like. I currently have a very old two-ball and I like it but it's time for a new one. I want something that has a good aiming feature on top. that is why I was looking at the Nome. I like the white aiming bar on the top.

Step 1: if you aren't getting fitted, go to golf Galaxy or the like and roll every mallet they have.

Step 2: pick out which shape fits your eye and feels good. Memorize model and specs

Step 3: log into global golf, eBay or the BST and find one used for 1/2 the price.

Step 4: drain putts

Only do that if you don't have the funds. Otherwise buy it from your local retailer where you tried them.

If we don't support local retailers, we eventually won't have any.

Wish I could like the post about the local retailers 100 more times. People that do that piss me off, you have no clue.

Would you take a test drive at a Porsche dealership if you only have a $20 000 budget? And waste a salesman's time? C'mon man!
What a terrible analogy. I would test drive it there if I could buy the same Porsche online for 1/2 the price. That would be a proper analogy. See how that works?

Let's try to keep it on the topic of mallets, please.

If you want to debate local demoing/online purchasing, there are other threads for that, like this one:

A lot of local golf shops match legitimate online prices. You just have to ask.

Another good option that I'm surprised hasn't come up yet is the Ping Ketsch, because not only does it have an effective alignment aid, the degree of face balance can be customized for your stroke if desired. I know the latest Cadence Ketsch is $229 MSRP, but I'm pretty sure the previous generation can be found for under $200 new. Maybe just barely under, haha.

If only you knew what you were talking about. Do you know what mark-up is on golf clubs? 20 points tops. I work in the industry, and we see it all the time. People want to be served, but don't want to pay for service.

You know that putter that you tried at Golf Galaxy? Yeah? Well, it cost them money to,have it out on the floor, so take it out of the 20% margins, and boom, a lot less profitable. I have a buddy that runs a GolfTown here in Canada, and as soon as winter hits, plenty of people go "shopping" and don't buy anything. They buy it all online, after having used GolfTown's demos, scratching them, dinging them and making them unsellable.

The day wil come where all of the big box stores. Will stop buying and displaying demos, because of people like you. If you want to buy online, that's fine, but don't be a hypocrite and use a store's demos with no intention to buy. You should go to OEM sponsored demo days at public courses, that's it.

I see it all the time at the club I work at. Put yourself in my shoes here. Member X uses a $249 TaylorMade fairway wood as a demo 12 times, scratching up the black face and dinging up the white head because he refuses to use the headcover. He then turns around, goes to GolfTown or online, and buys it. How is that fair to the retailer? All our clubs are tagged at the same prices as GolfTown. Why not support the pro at YOUR club?

Furthermore, I'd like to get your take on how to treat the member who bought the club at www.whatever and brings it back to you to warranty because the shaft broke after a week of use? Been there, done that. I had to lend him a demo AGAIN, and get his club fixed, although we didn't make a dime off of it. Think about that...

This is like the buggy whip maker's argument

If brick and mortar stores go away from having demos available, then they signed their own death warrant. Big picture, they can thank the likes of Taylormade for releasing like 15 product lines in 2 years and driving down cost due to supply.

Oh and you clearly don't understand how to use the term "hypocrite" since it does not apply here. What if I go into a golfsmith and demo a Ping and a Scotty putter, scratching the Scotty in the process. If I decide to then buy the Ping, am I a "hypocrite"? Come on now

The hypocritical part is walking in and trying stuff with absolutely NO intention of buying from the store, only to buy online.
That's not what hypocritical means FYI. If I condemned others for doing it, then did it, I'd be a hypocrite. If I publicly said "don't demo clubs you aren't buying" then did it, I'd be a hypocrite.

noun
1.
a person who pretends to be what he is not

As per dictionary.reference.com

Are you not pretending to be a buyer to use the box store's demos?

I'm pretty sure if you walked in to GolfGalaxy and told the salesman "I have no intention to buy anything here, I can get it cheaper online and that's what I'm going to do after trying your demos" they wouldn't let you hit balls. So, you are in fact being a pretender or deceiver, which are both synonyms of hypocrite by using their clubs with no intention to buy. In case you weren't aware, synonyms are different words that mean the same thing.
Yes probably. Most sales people at these big box stores DGAF. I won't debate the definition of hypocrite with you, but from Merriam Webster:
: a person who claims or pretends to have certain beliefs about what is right but who behaves in a way that disagrees with those beliefs

1
: a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion
2
: a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings
You're not pretending to be anything. Not one person here has said lie to the salesperson or anything like that. You're bringing that up. It's not hypocritical or unethical or anything else to walk in and try the product and then buy it elsewhere.

You shouldn't start calling other posters names just because you want to defend a dying sales model.

I have made a career in the golf business, and when I see this practice it enrages me. It's just plain dishonest.

Not much difference between me getting a price quote from a store or contractor, or other service just to drive prices down.

Maybe the business is dying because consumers are squeezing retailers beyond belief. Ever think of it that way? I knkw a lot of golf shop owners, and to be very honest with you, none of them are making a killing. They're just trying to get by, trying to "compete" with the big box stores, and trying to distinguish themselves by their service.

The fact that you say most employees at big box stores DGAF should be your hint to to go to a smaller retailer where they can take the time to serve your needs properly, and not be concerned with getting units out the door.
