Member-Guest(s) at Private Club

Recommended Posts

Interested in hearing about different Member Guest Tournament formats pricing, popularity and eligibility.

Ours is a 3 day Thurs-Sat with an optional Practice round Wed.

1 day of best ball, 1 day of Chapman (you hit your partners 2nd shot, then switch back), 1 day of shamble with 2 balls counting on even holes.

F&B / Parties

All inclusive starting Thus, multiple bars set up on course, breakfast and lunch buffets.

Thurs night stag night w/ "wild beast feast" diinner (boar, quail ect...)

Fri and Sat couples parties.

2 Shotguns stars/day so 96 members can play. The policy is everyone who played last year gets an invitation the following year, and they go to the waiting list. The list can take multiple years, to alleviate this problem they are considering having a Senior Member Guest in the fall, that would be shorter and cheaper.

Anyone else have 2 multi-day member guests? are they separated by age or can you play in both?

Last club I was at did a Friday, Saturday, Sunday event. Beverages available all over the course, breakfast, lunch, and dinner on both Sat and Sun. Lunch, drinks and dinner/snacks on Friday. Pro shop credit of 250 per player for the mobile proshop (titleist was the vendor that year).

Thursday night: Team betting night in the mens locker room. Cocktails free flowing.

Friday - 9 hole afternoon scramble with two man team handicap. Flights were separated to each nine of the course (so they played the same nine holes). Followed by poker night with food and drinks.

Saturday - 3 sets of 9 hole matches better ball of the twosome handicapped. Cocktails and food after the golf

Sunday - 3 sets of 9 hole matches. After last match flight winners were determined and they then played in a horserace (two man teams playing alternate shot with handicap off of low team number). Winner of the horserace was the overall winner of the event. Sunday night event is a couples event where the wives are invited to dinner and drinks.

Overall it was very well received and there was a good mix of golf, drinking, food, gambling, and prizes that everyone seemed to enjoy.

The last one that I played in was a three day at a extremely high end club , mid summer classic.

4 flights, Championship thru C flight , we where in the championship.

Thursday Open Play / Practices rounds all day

Thursday night was "casino night" ( Skins Pool, cigar and bourbon dinner, member bet / wagers , Calcutta, poker for those who dared )

Friday (Day 1 ) starting at 10:30 ; holes 1 and 10 - Tee times - flight match play X 2, 9 holes - 75% GHIN,
Snack stations on course, lunch buffet, chair massages between rounds, drink stations, cigar roller , etc...

Friday night - Open pig roast / BBQ buffet on the grillroom patio

Saturday (Day 2) Starting at 8:00; holes 1 and 10 - Tee Times - flight match play x 3, 9 holes - 75% GHIN
Breakfast buffet, snack stations on course, lunch buffet, chair massages between rounds, drink stations, cigar roller , etc...

Saturday night - Spouse dinner (an AMAZING full NE Clambake) dancing , drinking , other frivolities'

Sunday (Day 3) Starting 8:00; holes 1 and 10 ( Champ. matches are off of 1 ) - Tee Times - Championship matches are 18 holes - 75% GHIN
Breakfast buffet, snack stations on course, lunch buffet, chair massages between rounds, drink stations, cigar roller , etc...

Sunday evening -Follow the final groups and stomp & fill divots ( we had a final group gallery of about 100 people) Open awards ceremony Chicken BBQ - all skins , Calcutta, member bets paid.

For the price $1900 per group you get about $350.00 worth of stuff from the club, my favorite was a pair of ECCO Bioms . We lost on the final hole and walked away with $500 from the proshop . I think I netted in about $4000 from side matches and skins, so the weekend paid for itself and then some...

I should mention the year we won we took home in excess of 6g's each in cash and prizes. Though I know our Calcutta is small compared to some clubs

We also have a member-member event that uses the 5 x nine hole matches and then a horse race (we call this one the Strange Cup). I've played in a lot of MG's in this format though

We got 27 at our club so they go one day 9 holes scramble, 9 better ball, 9 scotch ball. Same as OP guys that played last year get first right of refusal, rest go on the waitlist. I don't really know the entire itinerary as its in the fall so I've been back at school when its taken place the past 3 years. I know one of the options for the tee gift last year was a titleist bag, I think there were 4 main options and that was one of them, and then various other trinket things.

Ours is at a semi-private and has been fairly small. It is Saturday and Sunday with 4 different 9 hole formats and percentage of handicap for each format. $200 a team so pretty cheap.

One of the better ones in the area is flighted by team handicap and has 6 teams per flight. They have 5- 9 hole matches with a shootout at the end of all the flight winners. I can't remember the price for this one.

My member guest is going to be awesome. 1000 bucks a team. Getting close to 1000 bucks before even teeing it up with logoed Pro V's shoes- shirts. Three day tourney. Paramutial, Calcutta, I think there will be a horse race too. Booze, food all included. Then practice round crazyness with long drive, chip off, putt off.

I’ve directed multiple member/guests. At one facility, I came up with an interesting twist on the format (the committee wanted something different). The format was round robin matches of 9 holes (6 teams per flight – 120 teams total). Each match was worth three points: The “A” players played each other in singles match play for a point, the “B” played each other in singles match play for a point, and the Team played four ball match play for a point. It made for some interesting strategy and competition.
The other format I’ve used is more traditional – round robin matches of 9 holes. Each hole won was 1 point, and if you won the match, it was an additional 1 point (total of 10 available per 9 hole match). This seemed to keep teams from losing interest when they got down early, and if you were up you were trying to dust them 10-0. It also allows a team to make a run late in the matches.

Mine is a Thursday PM practice round, Thursday night putting contest/party, 27 holes Friday, 18 holes Saturday, over the top party Sat night, $800-$900 per team plus betting. 90% handicap, pots of gold, all kinds of side games, etc. Includes dinner Thursday, lunch Friday, lunch/dinner Saturday, all the beer you can drink on the course plus open bar at the Saturday party. Each participant gets a "gift" which is usually a wedge, a pair of shoes, etc.

It is usually either at capacity or close. Points are awarded based on past participation, meaning if you played in it a bunch of times, you have a better chance at getting in.

I don't play in it because:
-Most of my buddies who aren't members either don't have official handicaps, or can't take 3 days away from work/family.
-The rounds are slow, 2.5 hour nines, people looking at one foot putts from 2 sides, etc. I can't deal with that.
-Walking not permitted.
-Many of the guests are extreme sandbaggers. Example, friend of mine played against a 15 handicap guest who shot 35 and 37 for two nines.
-$800+ for playing slow rounds my own course is nuts.

Ours works like this:

$800/team and you get an entry gift (last year was choice of sunice rain suit, DNAS or new putter)
We have bars set up every 3 holes with different themes (ie. Mexican margaritas, Caribbean pina coladas and so on)
We hired the girls from the local Hooters and college to serve drinks

Thursday: Each team from each flight can throw in $50 and that entire flight starts on every 3rd hole and plays a true alternate shot. Highest score on each hole is eliminated per hole. There is a closest to the hole chip off after each hole to determine ties. At the end there is a champ from each flight that basically earns enough to pay for the tourney. They then play all the flight winners against each other with handicaps again for $50/team to determine a tournament winner. This is a bigger draw than the tournament.
Friday: 36 holes of 9 joke matches. Breakfast and lunch are served. No dinner that night.
Saturday: 18 holes of 2 nine hole matches. Breakfast, lunch and dinner that day along with a party.
Sunday: 9 holes to determine flight winners and then they all start back on #1 playing each team with handicaps. Then there is a "betting 9" that usually gets about 12-14 teams playing each other. Everyone throws in $50 again and you play each team captains choice with no handicaps. This gets more people drawn to it than the tournament winners bracket. Basically all the wives, girlfriends and friends come out. We'll have 200 people following this group. Lots of screaming and hilarity going on. It is the best tournament of the year. Also the worst as it is 4 days of the worst hangovers of your life.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just signed up for our Memeber/Guest last week which is played in early July. Gonna be my first one since I just joined last July. 3-day event (Thursday-Saturday) with optional practice round Wednesday. 3 or 4 flights with Championship flight played at scratch. Formats change but scramble/shamble/champan etc is what I heard last week with a horse race thrown in there. Heard the calcutta can be steep but have faith in my partner. Don't know what all the $825 gets us yet but I'll chime back in once I have more details. I played in a tourney last summer at Dismal River and this sounds like a helluva time at about half the cost.

Any tips from other club members on playing style? Do I hold back the drinking while playing, get a good night's rest and stay cutthroat or do I partake heavily and enjoy the fun part and put golf on the back burner?

[/quote]It depends on your and your partner's style. Are you basically a couple of laid-back guys who enjoy having fun, or are you very competitive types who would choke an opponent to win a game of checkers? Are you desperate for cash, or are you doing great and this is just for fun?

Personally, I can't see playing a M-G in order to make money or to build my ego; it's a great deal of fun, and that's what I'm looking to get out of it. YMMV.

Well I signed up for it not intendeing to make money but to have fun and more importantly meet more members. My only problem with drinking on the course is my game goes to hell. My friend who I invited to play with me would not allow me to drink during a round when we played in a league last summer which we ended up winning the first half. My focus and concentration goes away and I'm more concerned about when the beer cart girl will be back next. I guess I have beer/golf ADHD. What I might do is hold back as much as possible on the course and let loose in the clubhouse after each day. Compromise!
