Woods and Vonn have become a megawatt sports celebrity pairing. In Colorado this week there has been a persistent rumor that their marriage is imminent.

Sidelined golfer Tiger Woods, who claimed Wednesday night to be taking a break from golf, popped up on the ski hill Wednesday to support his girlfriend, Lindsey Vonn, at the FIS Alpine skiing world championships in Beaver Creek, Colo.

 

Woods and Vonn have become a megawatt sports celebrity pairing in recent years, and in Colorado the last two weeks there has been a persistent rumor that their marriage is imminent, perhaps even on Valentine’s Day. The women's slalom is scheduled for Saturday — and Vonn is not expected to enter.

 

The two American athletes, each among the very best their sports have produced, came together as a couple during a period of relative hardship for both of them. Since they announced their romance two years ago, Woods' golf game has spiraled out of control, while Vonn, the world's most decorated female skier, was sidelined through two years of knee rehabilitation.

 

Vonn finished 27th in Thursday’s first run of the giant slalom race, 2.67 seconds off leader Anna Fenninger of Austria. A faster effort during the second run in the afternoon led to a 14th-place finish.

 

Amid a deep and mysterious slump on the golf course, Woods on Wednesday announced an indefinite leave from his own sport. He surfaced in Colorado to support Vonn, who has followed him on golf courses around the world for the past two years during her recuperation from two major knee surgeries.

 

Woods has alluded to an injury not related to his previous surgery, and said in a statement Wednesday that he was undergoing daily physical therapy and was "feeling better every day."

 

"Right now, I need a lot of work on my game, and to still spend time with the people that are important to me," Woods said. "My play, and scores, are not acceptable for tournament golf. Like I've said, I enter a tournament to compete at the highest level, and when I think I'm ready, I'll be back."

 

Woods surfaced in Beaver Creek Thursday morning. Organizers have worked hard to make him feel safe after an episode three weeks ago at a ski race in Italy where he claimed to have been injured in a "surge" of photographers during which he claimed to have lost a tooth.
