Ok, agree that it is best to keep your mouth shut but just as a scenario, IF he had said "I guess I should have hit driver", would that have been ok or is it still indirect advice?
I'm not a big fan of the way 8-1/8 is written, but as it is written the way it is, if you say this to another player prior to his facing a similar shot, you are in violation even if you call it a "guess" since there is clearly an implication of advice there.

The reason I don't like the way it's written is because if you mutter this same phrase to yourself while picking up your tee, there's no penalty. I wish that the Decision referenced the speaking player's intent rather than who he was talking to.

- you cannot play a provisional for a shot you think went in a hazard
Ok, now we are getting serious.

If you 'think' your ball ended in a water hazard it does not mean anything from Rules point of view. Thus you may play a provisional even if you 'think' your ball ended in a WH. It is only when you 'know or are virtually certain' that your ball ended in a WH you may not play a provisional. In all other cases you may play a provisional.

This is important as distinguishing 'thinking' and 'knowing or being virtually certain' may save you a lot of strokes, or even save you from being disqualified from a stroke play competition.

Basic but pretty important for a newcomer to tournament play......and speaking from direct experience.

In one of my first 'real' tournaments I played (it was a men's club tourney but still, was my first non-corporate hit-and-giggle type), I was living in California. I was on the 3rd green and just missed a short 4 footer for par. I was annoyed and just scooped up the ball with my putter and walked off the green. As I took a step off the green, I realized what I did. DQ in my first tourney after 3 holes. Well done, genius.

BIG lesson learned there.
Just so you don't feel bad. A guy I was playing with in a provincial mid-am qualifier did this on the first green. The old scoop up of a 6 incher. He was walking off the green and the other fella and myself called out to him "ughhh I think that needs to be holed partner." The ashen look on his face was priceless and I felt sorry for the guy. He was a top competitive ski guy for Canada and was trying his hand at competitive golf and had a rude intro. We called for a rules official. He was so flustered he shot about 50 on the front 9 and hightailed it out of the parking lot at the turn

I am going to play a few "real" tourney's this year for the first time and I have a very basic question about keeping score. I know you keep each others score but can you keep your own score on the same scorecard and can you ask the person you are keeping score for what they shot on the previous hole if you are unsure for whatever reason?

Keep 2 cards. One for them, one for you.

You can ALWAYS ask what they shot. It does help though when you do keep track of their shots so there's no question when you clarify it with them after the hole.
Rule 6-6. Scoring in Stroke Play

a. Recording Scores

After each hole the marker should check the score with the competitor and record it.
Some may not like that you ask, but that's not your job to keep track of what they shoot on the hole, you're just a marker of what they shot and the rules mention you should ask (to be on the same page). Note there is no penalty for not following 6-6a. But one could make an argument that if the FC doesn't want to say a score when asked, it could be covered under etiquette rules. It's not a real big issue, but I played once with a gent that it got under his skin when I asked the first few holes and he haughtily said "why don't you just keep track yourself?". When I showed him the rule where it says "I should ask", he shut up about it.

But again, it is advisable to track his strokes. After a while, you get used to it.

Usually there are more than one column/line for scores, so you can keep whole group scores if you want. But make sure that after round score checking cross over other scores and sign the marker part, and player part on your card.

Absolutely you can ask, and you should. Something like "That was a 6, right?" is sufficient. If anyone should gruff at you, you can politely remind them that if you get their score wrong on the low side, they're subject to DQ, so a little confirmation might be in their best interest.

"I'll just put you down for a double unless you tell me otherwise ... okay?" :taunt:

Knowledge of the Rules is part of the skill set which a player must have to play competitive golf.

In my tourney play, I'm shocked by how many guys won't tell you what they shot and get mad when you ask. It's the minority, for sure, but they are out there.

Once you identify one of these guys, make sure you do ask every hole, even when you know exactly what they shot. You're trying to beat them, right?

I always ask. Better players could not care less. Head case players you can topple simply by asking.

Just ask their marker instead

I'm their marker. It's usually 3-somes and we change cards around to each other.
