Oxford Greens Golf Course

This has been open for a couple of years now, and its everything is growing in nicely.

Its a chagellenging course, you feel like you are going up hill all day.. the 2nd whole is 600yds, uphill, with giant slope on the fairway that you either have to be short or hit a monster hit to stay above it..if not it will roll back and still have 400 yds to go.

 

Greens are really, really fast.. the have slow them a bit..members have complain that you couldn't hold anything on the greens.

 

Driving range right next to the first whole, nice putting green.

Actually the third is the 600+ yard hole - and it is wicked, ther is a severe false front to the green as well, and if you're putting towrds is and go to far its bye-bye!!

 

The second is the par 3 down the hill to the green with the water behind and slightly left of it. Nice course, buat as my brother pointed out - almost every hole fwy pitches right to left. After he mentioned it I realized he was right.

 

I also like the 9th par three with nothing but waste between you and the green!

 

I do like it, but when I lose it, its usually with a BIG slice, and I get antsy with all those houses so close to the course!!

course kept in good condition, but overall its ok. a bit too modern in my opinion. A few to many houses with more being built, the 3rd hole is aweful, 613 straight up hill with a fairway that is not wide and has a fall off to the left, puts you right in a hazard, you really have to hit 4 iron, 4 iron, 4 iron unless you're straight as a arrow with the driver. just a bad hole in all. The 10th is pretty poor as well as the 15th? the one with all the waste and junk. There were plenty of solid holes but in the end its just another modern course.

Thats right.. got 2 and 3 backwards.. its still very nice course for the area. 2nd and 3rd holes could ruin your round if you let them get to you.

What qualifies as a modern course?

well by the ratings, after 1960, but in my mind it is the kind of golf that is built to sell houses. back in the day, they were built to golf on, not to make tons of money and sell property. I just prefer an older place such as a donald ross design. Obviously there are bad holes on many golf courses, there are bad-old courses, and it is dificult to get on the 1916 gems.

There are many great new courses as well, this one just wasnt, in my mind, one of the greatest. Certainly a nice place, a great facility, just has a couple holes/things i dont care for. By no means is it aweful, and it has plenty of very good holes. I liked it, didnt love it

Can you give me some examples of some courses around the area. I'm interested!!

I don't know what kind of examples you're looking for, but courses that i have liked.... Tashua Knolls in Trumbull - excellent bargain IMO, Laurel View in Hamden - has some pretty nice holes, Lyman Orchards Middletown - only played the Player Course, there are some weird holes with a lot of blind shots, but once you've played it you're at least aware of the layout. You're near Richter, which is reputedly a very good public venue, but I personally aen't played there yet...

tashua was nice, nice greens, and the jones course at lyman is good too, heard the player isnt that good

I've played Oxford a few times with my buddy Chris. It's one of my favorites. I always enjoy playing it, especially the back 9. I agree it is a pretty modern layout, but most of the holes are tucked back in the trees still. I definetly think it's worth playing at least once.

Yeah I played Toshua Knolls and the Lyman Orchards courses.. I like the Jones Course better than the Player (too many trick shot, specially the one hole you are aiming at the field goals)

 

Still my Favorite is Wintonbury Hills in Bloomfield.

I played in the men's club at Oxford for 3 years, have moved on to a course I can walk.

I think its a super layout with generous fairways and challenging, undulating greens. Most of the holes do slope right to left and you have to be able to hit a fade to keep the ball in the fairway - anything with a draw or hook runs through.

I think its a modern course in that you have to know where to hit it to avoid trouble and play the slopes. You can't just bang driver on every hole, and there's the right places to lay up to on a number of holes.

The par 3's are outstanding.

I quit it as my home course for 2 reasons - no walking and $90 greens fee. After 100 rounds, the thrill was gone to pay that every week. The maintenance isn't up to the rate they charge either, the traps are groomed infrequently, etc.

I live in Ct. & have played over 70 rounds this year, pretty much all over the state. there are plenty of nice courses to play that are challenging yet fair. I think the problem lies in what tees everyone plays from. Most people shouldn't be playing from the tips. Everyone likes to think they're a better golfer than they actually are, think they hit the ball farther than they actually do & play from tees they shouldn't. Golf should be enjoyable not a struggle--it's not your job!!! We all like to challenge ourselves but who wants to pay a lot of money for greens fees & be miserable for 4-5 hours. Most players should be playing from the white tees. Nothing wrong with playing from 6100-6500 yds. As far as I know 99.9% of the people on this site are not going to be professional golfers. Golf should be fun--Go Enjoy It!!! ( Just my little rant!) Now for great courses in Ct. that won't break the bank. Here's a few: Timberlin, Topstone, Tallwood, Stanley, Lyman (jones Course), Blackledge, tunxis, fairview farms. Also great but more exspensive: Lake of Isles, Fox Hopyard, Wintonbury, Oxford Greens. FYI, just this past year they allowed walking.

I've played the course about a dozen times. I like the layout. It is definately challenging, especially from the tips which is almost 7200 yards. I'm a solid 1-2 handicap and I have to play well to break 80 from the tips. The greens are firm, fast and very undulating. You don't find too many flat putts anywhere. Some of the greens (like 3, 11, 13) you have to play your approach shot 15 yards away from the pin and play the slope of the green to get it close.
My biggest complaint is the fairway on 3. 600 yrds up a big hill and the fairway is almost impossible to hit with a driver. No room at all to miss right and if your drive hits the left center of the fairway it could very well roll out of play do to the extreme right to left slope. Most par 5's are birdie holes but if I get out of there with par I am very happy.

Lived in CT my whole life, and probably play 50 rounds a year. Im a solid 12. Anyway, Oxford is a decent course, but there are much nicer for less money. IMO..Fairview Farms in Harwinton is one of the nicest courses to play for the money. Not extremely difficult, but nicely laid out. A fairly new course..(maybe 10 years) but doesnt play like one at all. Clubhouse is great also. Contrary to most here, I actually prefer the Player course at Lyman to the Jones course. Yes its more challenging, but it makes up for it in the scenery. (especially in the fall!!) As said before, there are many blind shots, but play through it once and youll know where your approach should be. Jones course is much to open to pose any kind of "interesting" shots, but nice course as well. Richter is quite possibly the nicest in CT but bring your wallet. Last I played there it was close to $100.

oxford is way nicer then fairview in my opinion. It is more challenging but fairview might have a hand up on the greens

The best part about Lyman orchards player course is the free apples you can score.

Oxford greens is much better.

IMO--The best value in the state: Timberlin, Topstone, Tallwood, Fairview Farms. Great but more money: Fox Hopyard, Wintonbury, Lake of Isles (my favorite but really expensive), Oxford Greens, Gillette Ridge & Richter Park. there are plenty of nice courses to fit everyone's taste.

I also played Newport National (Newport, RI) great course, links feel, great shape, look for deals. Also the Ranch in Mass. very nice but too expensive for me. Enjoy!

Walking is allowed but no push carts and no break on greens fees. You have to carry and its a hilly course (3rd hole 640 yrds all uphill). If you're not using a cart they should give you a break on the price.

I agree with above, but would add Rockledge in W. Hartford and both courses at Lyman to the list of value courses. Newport National is a great track, but go with a local - big upcharge for out of state.
