My cocker is a quiet little guy that sits on the cart seat and watches me hit balls

People love to come by and say hi

I walk him on the course all winter when the course is closed ... nov 15 to April 22. He is off leash for 75 minutes and loves it. ... Chases geese, ducks etc

Just need to be careful with the thin ice and in early winter and late spring ... then he's on leash

Dogs are all over the courses at the home of golf

I live in VA, and dogs are actually very welcome on the course. They keep away geese. And Goose poop ends up all over certain greens and fairways near water. At Penderbrook there is a guy who comes by with a john deer and a border collie and they just ride the course the dogs runs, that dog is in heaven.

My old home course in Fort Worth, had a Jack Russell Terrier named Hoss, who lived in a veterinarian's house on the course. He had an obsession with geese & ducks, and would chase them off the fairways where there was a water hazard nearby. It worked out great, until he found out that people in golf carts also had peanut butter crackers & other such treats & they would give him some. Well, that ended his chasing days, he got fat, & hung around the turn near the vending machines. No matter where he was, if he heard the "crinkle" sound of cellophane wrapped treats being opened, that became the only time he'd run fast. The funniest thing I ever saw with him though, was one evening a teenage worker kid was driving the cart that picked up range balls & he had Hoss in the seat with him. The kid was singing & Hoss was howling at the top of their lungs just having a blast picking up balls. :taunt:

We have a guy that comes by our course all summer. GooseBusters or GeeseBusters he is called.

3 dogs. A border collie, a lab and a Nova Scotia duck toller.

We used to have hundreds of geese in season. No max we have is 10. These dogs have been trained to swim to next and crush eggs as well

I'm disappointed to have read this entire thread and not found one single "dogleg" joke.

I take my dog on course when there is nobody there and I hit 10 or so practice shots. I give her a "sit", "stay". She waits for my PSR, I hit and away we go. She likes chasing the jack rabbits but she doesn't really want to catch one. She wouldn't know what to do with it.

Never seen a dog on course in the middle of the day except about 35 years ago. Playing in the morning, about 3rd time on a course. Greenskeeper changing a hole with his dog sitting on the green watching. We hear club face meeting golf ball and I see the greenskeeper look down the fairway, then at his dog, back down the fairway, he calls the dog and it jumps up then the ball landed where he was sitting. Good thing that dog was obedient!

Man, such a double edged sword on this and I am a HUGE dog lover... I'd say be sure its cleared by managment before attempting.

Basically I'd find it okay if you could be sure that nobody knew you had a dog there unless they saw it. be sure the animal is always on the leash, quiet/respectful, and picked up after. If you can guarantee that I'd have no problem.

Yes that's how I feel too. I wouldn't want to impose on anybody but I do you practice at the far edge of the range anyway. When he gets a little older I still might try to do some early morning or late evening range session with him.

I wouldn't do it, but I am more of a cat person myself.

Ugh. What is wrong with you? Haha. Any well behaved dog is alright in my book. Unfortunately my dog would run away at the drop of a hat. He makes a good watch dog tho, and would kill you if you came into my house!

The day I got married in Oct 1995, I was on 18 w an eagle putt on the closing par 5.

I was playing against one of my groomsmen as the other clowns in the wedding party had bailed based on the forecast

Anyhow, the rain held off and it was me going head to head against the top mid am in the country ( to be fair he had not reached that level yet) .. 45 and windy ... But sunny.

So as my putt is rolling the greenskeeper's chocolate lab pup grabs it 2 feet from the the throat of the hole ... wTF! I cried , I laughed, I still won the match .. Life is good

Dogs love being wherever their owner is. I don't think they know "bored"
A well trained dog should be able to go wherever his owner goes, without raising any concerns.
Having said all that, I would worry that I or someone else may unintentionally injure a pet on the range or course. I couldn't deal with that....

I have seen dogs wandering over Royal St Georges. We used to have a lot of dog walkers at the courses I grew up playing in Cornwall - being links courses, they were often bisected by public walkways down to the sea, so of course people would take their dogs for a walk down there.

I will never forget the day one of my friends hit a line drive 1 iron straight into the side of a Jack Russell - the dog was moving and the ball tracked into him with a touch of draw that looked like a laser guided missile. The dog went down hard, but luckily got back up and ran off fast!

a serious question to those few here saying they bring their dogs to the course but are against others playing music at the course. How is one worse than the other?
[/quote]

Depends on what type of music the dog is playing.

For instance, a dog howling to the tune of "Who let the dogs out?" is, musically speaking, doing the right thing.

My dog is better behaved than just about any kid you'd see on the course. However I'm there to play golf, not walk my dog.

That said, last year the wife and I went on a trip to a course in the thumb in Michigan, and another couple had their yellow lab with them. We ran into them 3 or 4 times. The dog would ride in the cart with them, then when they would get on the green, the dog would get out, sit on the fringe, watch them putt out, then get back into the cart. It was wonderful!

It just takes a well trained dog. I don't know if I'll ever own a dog again, but my last two - especially my Japanese Akita - were very well trained. She'd sit, stay, attack and more on command. There are dogs trained to operate with police & military personnel. They function around sirens and gunshots, surely a golf ball being struck shouldn't drive one into a frenzy.

I'll get my son a dog when he's older..
I won't tell him, but I'll train the dog to detect marijuana and sweep his room while he's at school.

As someone mentioned, In England and Scotland generally dogs are very very common on the courses there. Played a number of rounds with people having their own dog following them around. No problem at all. Dogs often are better behaved than their masters.

As long as the dog is well-mannered, no problem. That said, the person that mentioned that 560 yard dogleg where the guy had his dog come out and fetch the ball, one course in Tampa for a while had a dog in the backyard left unattended and he would at various times run across the fairway and fetch any balls he could carry and take them into his yard and hid them. Sometimes you could catch near him and yell and he'd drop the ball but more than once, I saw him take off and keep going with someone's ball.

Kay,

I love the way your dog matches the seats and whatever you call the stuff hanging of the roof

The stuff hanging from the roof is the rolled-up sides that enclose the cart. Everyone here in the mountains has carts with enclosures, or we'd freeze to death riding to & from the golf course (or drown during monsoon season). I had the cart a few years before I got the Cocker Spaniel that matches. Old clubs have old head covers. :taunt:

I was on the putting green once at Tijeras Creek. Some guy tied his dog to a bush, it yipped the entire time. WTF?!?

I'm a dog guy, I've owned dogs most of my life, love them to death, but there's a time and a place. Besides, wouldn't you feel terrible if your dog got beaned by an errant Top Flight?
