If you want to hear a really bad story about not being able to use your name on your restaurant, read up on the origins of KFC and Colonel Sanders. Long story short, when Sanders sold his restaurant and recipe, he also sold his likeness, for a lump sum of $2 million with no future royalties. It was a ton of money back then, but he couldn't use his recipe, his real name, his fake name, his state, or even HIS OWN FACE in any restaurant moving forward. It was really a sour deal, and it set a precedent for people building in royalties and outs for these types of sales in the future.

But consider that it's a 2 way street and for Nike to "own" his name, it would make sense he would "own"/take equity in NKE. Stock was at around $12 at that time (split adjusted), now it's around $100.

would have been an intersting story if Tiger all these years was plowing his money into Nike stock. He could have eventually been a major stake holder at this point and already be a billionaire.

I knew a sales rep who worked for Callaway back in the day when it was only wedges and putters. They couldn't pay him so they gave him shares of stock. He wasn't thrilled with this initially but that posture changed bigtime a few years later.
