The WRX--Big Break Carry the Water Challenge

Last night's episode of a simple how far you could carry it over the hazard sparked a bit of discussion in the Big Break Thread.

 

So as not to derail that thread's main discussion, how about it here?

 

The scenario was pick your longest distance to carry the hazard safely.

 

WRX'ers. how far back would you play from?

 

 

I would have picked a number pretty similar to Chad's, around 220 to 225.

 

Anyone else. Be honest. What carry do you feel comfortable trying?

220 would be comfortable...240 would make me think and reach for a wedge.

I just posted in the big break thread but I'll say it again here, I'm going from 260 and I'm gonna try and hop one off that bridge on the right to get it over!

I missed the episode, so I don't know whether or not they were allowed to tee it up or not. I assume no. If flat calm wind conditions from the fairway, over 230 would scare me... I'd pick 225 max.

I'd have to nut one to carry 230. Three wood off the deck comes out pretty low. I'm more likely to neuter one if I try to hit it too hard.

i'd probably go 210 with a 4 hybrid to play it safe. If pressed I could probably try 230 with my 3 wood and hope i can get enough loft from off the deck to clear the water

275 would be a normal 3 wood for me if no other conditions were affecting the shot. If it came down to needing to edge someone out I know I could carry my 3 wood over 290 if i nutted one

Hmmm, distance to carry off the deck? Honestly, while I can cream my 3W, it's a low screamer that relies on rollout just as much as flight to get to 250 or so. So guess I'd be going with the 20* hybrid.

Probably 220 carry at most...otherwise I'm going to start making all kinds of ugly swings to muscle it.

Put me in the 220 club. My 3W set to 16.5* carries avg exactly 225. I would be very comfortable with driver.

My playing partner and I are going to set down at 251yds from mound in front of the 18th green at Laurel Hill Golf Club in Lorton, Va.

Water front and right, with a bail out area left. We'll call it clean, but do not have a shot with water straight across and flat, other than this one. Wind is usually in your face on 18, but we'll see.

I must be the short knocker around here. 200 would have to be my spot and even then I would need to hit it on the screws.

I should have added to my earlier post... if skipping it across the water would count (as long as it made it safely to dry land) I may bump my 225 up to 250. I've got that shot in the bag.

That's me. I can get 3 wood out there pretty well , but like you it's a low hot one and even if I got it elevated more than usual, it's never going to hold a green.

Maybe carry it a hot 220 and if it's a stream instead of a lake it bounces over!?

It depends how many balls I have in my bag and how many Mulligan tokens are in my pocket. I will get consistent carry with a hybrid of 200, but my 3W off the deck is the least reliable club I carry. Assuming I stroked it 220 is doable, much beyond that I would need Clay to give me a tail wind.

It depends if we were replicating the challenge. I'd go as far back as 240 to keep no more than 2 guys behind. That'd be a long 3-wood, but not impossible. For a more certain shot I'd feel more comfortable at 230ish.

I know I can hit a 3 wood a lot further but under those conditions nerves might get the best of you.

235 for me but I'd say 25% chance of going in the water as I sometimes get the low runner with the 3W. For a virtual 'no doubt about it' 225 with my 5W. I always hit the 5W pure.

I'd be confident from 225 with my 5 wood. I probably wouldn't want to chance it with a 3 wood.
