Jordan Spieth Swing

He has one of my favorite swings on tour. Extremely smooth. Extremely fun to watch.

Observation: He doesn't look like he generates a ton of club head speed (I could be totally wrong), which is probably why it looks so smooth. (I could be totally wrong)

Question: Might be a dumb question, but besides pushing off the ground, where does he get his power from?

He's naturally a fairly strong person for his size(isn't quite as tall as he looks), and he has proper sequencing. Proper sequencing will always lead to power.

I would like to add, besides the chicken wing he doesn't really do anything to HINDER power either, which is also important.

That ball gave the wind the FINGER!

In a Golf Fix episode Jordan mentioned one of his keys is to think of no rotation of the clubface. Obviously he ends up rotating some, but kind of explains where the quasi chicken wing comes from.

Haven't looked at his statistics recently but honestly his ball striking isn't overly impressive. I was at the Valspar Thursday and on the range I didn't think he was striking it all that well. Was surprised to see him near the lead the next few days. Especially on that course which usually requires good ball striking.

His driver SS at the WGC as 114mph so he brings some heat. Not Bubba heat but 114 is slightly above average for the tour.

The only part of his game that really stands out is his short game. The kid has golden hands. He isn't terribly long; I would just say he is above average (don't go off the PGA Tour Driving Avg cause it is not calculated right). His ball striking is average and his putting is not that great; though he seems to make the putt at right moment when he is on.

The one thing that stands out in his game is his competitive attitude. It reminds me of Tiger in 97'. He if he hits bad shot, he will b***h a little after he hits it, but he has already forgot about it be the time he is halfway to the ball. He is now focused more on how do I get this stupid little ball in the hole in 3 shots. This asset of his will make him a better player than Rory, Rickie, Reed, DJ, and the rest of the bunch.

If he can become a above average ball striker it would be very scary.

from the golf digest article on Jordan's swing:

Statistically, Jordan Spieth's driving is pretty unremarkable. He ranks 90th or lower on the PGA Tour in distance off the tee and hitting fairways and 150th in total driving, which measures power and accuracy.

But those are just numbers. "Driving is a strength of mine," says Spieth, who has one win, five runner-up finishes and 15 top 10s in the year and a half since he joined the tour. "I don't hit it the farthest, but I don't see a lot of players working the ball left or right the way I do. I focus on getting better angles into the greens rather than distance or making sure it's in the fairway."

Adds his teacher, Cameron McCormick: "When he misses a fairway, he doesn't miss by much." Spieth says he hits quality tee shots because he has control of the clubface through impact, keeping his left wrist facing the target for as long as he can and adjusting his swing path slightly to add any curve.

"But even then, I try not to curve it very much," he says. "His swing is a classic example of function before form," McCormick says. "It's designed to control the ball, and that's really what matters."

Jordan is currently 8th in strokes gained from tee to green. He was 38th last year.
He's 24th in strokes gained putting this year, 20th last year.

It's not leading-the-Tour-highlight-real impressive, it's just better than 90% of the guys on a regular basis. Makes life easier when you're gaining strokes both off and on the green on everyone.

Speith's swing looks similar to Curtis Strange in his prime.
Dead on correct. Connected swing, arms close to chest back and forward, good weight shift. It's a solid swing. It's a Jimmy Ballard type swing.

I suspect his career will be similar to Curtis' career. A couple majors and double digit wins. Curtis wasn't great at anything, except grinding and competing. Curtis talked to himself a lot too. And it wasn't pretty.

Not to name drop, but I played on the Princess Anne H.S. (Va Beach) team with Curtis. He was a long hitter, but wild. His swing changed a lot by the time he got on Tour. He became a controlled player in his early 20s. People forget that Curtis was possibly the best Tour pro in the 80s.

There's a silly statement if I ever saw one.

So, unless someone makes MORE money that any golfer being discussed, one can't talk about any facet of his game?

Are you for real?

No doubt he did, but how much has he left on the table with that horrible swing? And how much more in the future? How much BETTER would he be with a proper swing?

How much is a new back worth when he throws out the one he's got? Or his knee?

The swing is part of the game of golf. If you can improve one area of your game to get better, why wouldn't you?

What if his short game was bad?

Would you say the same thing?

How about putting? If his putting was as bad as his swing, would you say the same thing? What if his putter goes? Remember Tiger Woods?

Such narrow-minded and illogical thinking in golf, I've never seen this in other sports. He wins, so who cares?

Carry on

Look at his left foot and ankle through impact and the lower back on the follow-through. Just begging for a lower body injury.

Great player.

The swing has room for improvement. If not to play better, then to avoid injury. So much effort for a 289 yard (2014) driving distance average.

At 6'1", to be swinging that hard to drive it an average of 289 yards?

115th in driving distance at 6'1"?

Doesn't bode well...

DJ you can try and explain yourself as much as you want but the fact of the matter is the majority of people that read what you just wrote will probably discredit everything you say. you said is swing is horrible first off. then asked what if his short game and putting were bad? well the fact is that his short game and putting aren't bad and perhaps he knows that so there is no reason for him to drive the ball long. He even said himself, that he would rather worry about placing his drive with the best angle to the flag for the next shot. He is smart. Instead of looking at stupid stats(stats are for losers) how about look at his level of play which is top notch. He is 21 haha give the kid a break.

ps i would love to have that horrible swing as would every other person reading this!

I don't think he is actually trying to smash it. I watched him at the Oz Open and I think he drives within himself, and has an extra gear if he really needs distance. From what I've seen he is a strategic player who plays the percentages and keeps mistakes to a minimum. You might have a point about injuries, I guess time will tell.

Folks are saying its a good swing on the simple grounds of his current performance but eventually swinging as he does will lead to injury and so not a good swing although yes, it does give him some performance in the time being with his young body.

I said I liked his swing because it looks nice, and it seems he performs well with it.

The question I asked was: how does he seem to hit the ball decently far when he doesn't look like he's swinging that hard/fast. Didn't ask about his risk for injury.
I have heard there is this magical place on the club called the sweet spot. I never seen anyone hit it and neither have I but I hear if you hit it you can gain 25 yards!!!

In seriousness, swing swing speed is only about 25% of the equation for distance. Its more about ball speed and smash factor. This guy this year his average 1.489 and his highest is 1.52 (thats almost max) and his lowest is 1.480. So I think he has not missed the center of the face with driver all year

Power, consistency, rhythm, accuracy, non-injurious, hitting the sweet spot are not opposed to each other but all can be found in the same swing as demonstrated by Hogan, Snead and Nicklaus.

I wonder if Hogans swing would be so revered if he was playing today under the scrutiny of super slow mo, and spin numbets, and ball spped, and smash factor etc etc, insttead of the mystical images on grainy film which he is judged on?
