Guy was T5 going into the last round, shot +1 and all of a sudden needs a new coach?

Haters will hate.

its about scoring. not position. remember, this is a limited field event. in any other tournament when you are 12 shots back after two rounds, you more than likely miss the cut.
That sounds like you are downplaying Jordan's incredible start. Everyone in the field was getting their butt kicked after two days, not just Tiger. The kid had a 5 shot lead after two rounds.
ok, fair enough. maybe i was a bit short-sighted. so its like when adam scott had a seven-shot lead at the 2014 api after two rounds. 12 shots back was a tie for 29th. but in an average tournament where the lead is not 5, but one, 12 shots back generally isn't very good.

I think the stat that he was second to last in fairways hit and still shot -5 is impressive. I know there isn't any rough at Augusta and not much penalty for being out of the fairway, but he hit it all over the place off the tee for most of the four days and still played decently well. If he can figure out his tee problems ( a big IF considering it's been an issue for quite a while), then I think he will have a chance to compete in the final three majors.
Problems with the driver are a recurring thing on major weekends with Tiger. I know he was rusty this time, but it is not exactly a new trend. Too many wayward drives and too many missed putts in the final rounds. That is post-2008 of course.

Seems to me like he is trying too hard, doesn't look as composed as he used to. The technique that he had the other days seems to desert him because he is swinging too fast. Although he has obviously never won a major from behind, so chasing has always been a problem for him.

That is the point though, Spieth played phenomenal golf the first two rounds. 64-66 to start a major is insane, regardless of the course conditions. Where Tiger's game was 2 months ago, he is extremely fortunate to have only been 12 back after Jordan's amazing start. Tiger could have easily walked out there and shot in the 80's both rounds. If the tournament was held in February, I strongly suspect this would have been the case. His short game was that bad at the time.

When your body is mixing two "patterns" and different "release points" the result is missing 12 fairways in a row to start a Sunday round at the Master's.

I'd love to see video footage of Tiger "screaming" obscenities.

So ridiculous how he's held to a different standard by people.

Yeah, I remember watching that live. Even still, that doesn't sound like Tiger "screaming" obscenties. That sounds like a golfer muttering stuff, that high-powered mics are picking up. Which was my point, initially.
Sorry golfcarte but it sounds like you are stretching a bit to downplay Tiger's play. No he is not "back". No he is not dominating. But it was a great step in the road back wouldn't you have to say after the debacles of a few months/weeks ago? And to your earlier statement of Tiger will have to quit if he doesn't win soon smacks of wishful thinking. You need him gone that badly? He has never said, that I recall, that he will quit when he doesn't win. He said he will quit when he doesn't think he can win/be competitive. And granted he had an off third round but I would think T5 after three rounds is being competitive even if the leader was quite a ways ahead.

If I were Tiger I'd plan my schedule around McIlroy, Spieth, Reed, Day, Bubba, Rose, Johnson (pick one), Fowler, Matsuyama, Stenson, and Phil. Take the week off when they're playing.

if he plays forever that is fine with me. but i can't see him playing much longer without him winning a tournament. if he's changed, he hasn't said so. if he continues to play being competitive, but not winning, i would be very surprised. i think that would frustrate the you-know-what out of him. he certainly won't go through what jim furyk is going through, for example, not being able to close the deal, yet being so close. if you can accept that, tiger's fans can accept that, then fine. but its not the type of golf i've come to accept from tiger, and never will.

You are right. Driver has been a big issue for some time, and he doesn't hole crucial putts nearly as often now. The two putts he missed on 6 and 7 Saturday to really build some momentum are prime examples of putts he used to make to keep his round going.

And I agree he seems to try too hard. His tempo and control on Friday and the beginning of Saturday were really nice. But when he starts pressing, it's like he loses all of that and balls start flying everywhere. Not really sure why he thinks or feels the need to get his "pop" back. Being 285-290 off the tee and in the fairway should be plenty good for him considering how good he's always been with his iron play. I guess his ego won't let him play a more controlled style. I think he still has the ability to win majors, but at this point, I feel like his ego may prevent that, which seems ironic considering his ego would love to break Jack's record.
he's has played approximately 15 events since he last won. Many of those were marred by injuries that are well documented. As I said earlier in another thread, we don't know how Tiger thinks-if we did perhaps we would be #1 in the worlld at something! So perhaps you are correct and if he continues to not get it done he may hang it up. My take is that he is finally healthy and competing for the first time in about 18 months and was competitive first time out. So I will wait and see.

Playing with McIroy of all people on Sunday didn't help. Trying to be an alpha dog while the little guy you're playing with is blasting it 330 could cause a case of the sprays by trying to stay in the same zip code.

And so it did.

Wow-ya got me with a ten year old interview. I seem to recall Jack saying numerous times saying he would never be a ceremonial golfer-when he couldn't compete he would go fishing or play with the grandkids. And yet there he is on the first tee Thursday at Augusta, at the par 3 contest, at the father son ....
Do you really think he is anywhere near ready to say his best isn't good enough when he is just now getting healthy enough to be able to compete again?

well it was only a six year old interview when it was first discussed here four years ago. so maybe it was pure bravado that tiger said it back then, when he was winning everything in sight. but he's still saying it. this is from six days ago...

Competing is still the same. I'm trying to beat everybody out there. That hasn't changed. I prepare to win and expect to do‑‑ to go and do that.

the trying part i'm ok with, the preparing to win, fine. but tiger still expects to win, like it is a birthright. there's a saying that an expectation is a premeditated resentment. if tiger doesn't win soon, he will soon become a very resentful person. and I can't see him continuing playing a sport he resents because it has betrayed him.

Woods tied for 17th at the Masters in his first start since taking a self-imposed leave from competition, and while his next tournament is expected to be the Players Championship, Woods has yet to commit to the event. He has until May 1 to claim his spot in the field at an event he has won twice before, most recently in 2013.

Nice to see Nike trying to sell their shoes back to the very people who made them in the first place. Good business model. Pay Chinese people pennies a day to build golf shoes, then sell those very same shoes back to (presumably other) Chinese people for hundreds of dollars a pair.

Phil Knight is a genius.

As for Tiger, I think he is down to 10 or fewer events per year now. Any more than that and his body would break down. He is a very old 39 years now. Kind of fragile.

Your sarcasm meter is broken. Get it fixed.

EDIT: I guess I should allow for the chance that you could care less that Knight has long been associated with child labor abuses and are only offended at the post because I mentioned Tiger. Never mind the fact that someone else, not me, brought up Tiger travelling to China at Nike's bidding. Just why would Nike want Tiger in China? I'm sure you can connect the dots if you try hard enough.
